Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor trying newly released games on PC or Xbox, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass is the stronger starting point: both include day-one games, though a particular title may not be included. For browsing a large PlayStation console catalog, choose PlayStation Plus Extra. If you specifically want limited-time trials of selected PlayStation games, Premium is the relevant tier.
There is no universal winner. The right choice depends on your hardware, the games you want to try, whether you mean full catalog access or a time-limited trial, and the price in your region. This comparison focuses on US plan details checked October 7, 2026; features and prices can change by region and over time.
Which service should you start with?
| Your priority | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Try new releases on PC | PC Game Pass | Microsoft advertises day-one games and a PC library. Check whether each target game is included. |
| Try new releases on Xbox and supported devices | Game Pass Ultimate | Ultimate includes day-one games; title access and cloud availability vary. |
| Browse a rotating PS4 and PS5 catalog | PlayStation Plus Extra | Extra includes hundreds of Game Catalog titles, with games added and removed over time. |
| Try selected PlayStation games for a limited time | PlayStation Plus Premium | Premium adds trials for select games; it is not a trial of every PlayStation title. |
| Play through the cloud | Compare your device, region, eligible games, and time allowance | Both services have conditions and limits; the relevant details are below. |
Before subscribing, make a shortlist of three to five games you actually want to play. Check each game’s live listing, eligible tier, and platform, then compare the subscription cost for the time you expect to play. Catalog size alone does not establish that a particular game is currently available.
Does Game Pass include new games on day one?
Microsoft lists day-one games as a benefit of Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. That makes either plan a strong option if your goal is to try new releases on supported Xbox or PC hardware. It does not mean every new game—or every game you want—is included.
#1 Best Overall

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Game Pass Premium has a different promise: select games published by Xbox come to the plan within one year of launch. Essential does not include new release titles on day one. Microsoft cautions that titles, features, and availability vary over time, by region, plan, and platform. Confirm the specific game’s current listing before you pay.
PC Game Pass includes EA Play, which offers trials of select new EA games. That benefit is narrower than a general trial of Game Pass titles: do not assume it provides a timed trial for every game in the catalog.

What does each PlayStation Plus tier offer for trying games?
PlayStation Plus is split into three tiers. All three include online multiplayer for games that require it, but the catalog and sampling features differ.
| US tier | What matters when trying games | US price listed by Sony |
|---|---|---|
| Essential | Monthly games and online multiplayer; no Extra Game Catalog or Premium trial benefit. | $10.99 monthly, $27.99 for three months, or $79.99 annually. |
| Extra | Access to hundreds of Game Catalog games, with titles added regularly and some leaving. | $16.99 monthly, $43.99 for three months, or $134.99 annually. |
| Premium | Extra benefits plus a Classics Catalog, selected game trials, and cloud streaming. | $19.99 monthly, $54.99 for three months, or $159.99 annually. |
These are Sony’s US prices shown on its public plan page, not a guarantee of the price at checkout elsewhere. Taxes, promotions, and regional pricing may affect what you pay. Sony also says that, from January 2026, PS4 games will be added only intermittently.

Is a game trial the same as catalog access?
No. A catalog subscription lets you play listed games while they remain available to your plan and your membership is active. A trial is a limited-time way to sample a particular game. PlayStation Premium explicitly includes trials for select games; Xbox’s EA Play benefit includes trials of select new EA games, not trials of all Game Pass games.
If you want to evaluate one specific title before buying, check whether that title has a trial and what its time limit or other restrictions are. A game appearing in a subscription catalog is not the same as a short demo: it may give you access to the full game, but only while the title and your membership remain eligible.

Can you keep playing after a game leaves the catalog?
Catalog access is temporary. Xbox says access ends when your subscription expires or when a title leaves the service. Sony notes that some Game Catalog and Classics Catalog games have announced end dates; monthly games also require an active membership. If you are partway through a game, check its departure notice and decide whether you can finish in time or would rather buy it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do cloud play and device support affect the choice?
Cloud play is useful when you want to play on a supported device without relying solely on a console installation, but it is not available for every game, device, or territory. Compare the service’s current eligibility details for the specific title and the device you plan to use.

Xbox cloud gaming
As of October 7, 2026, Xbox had announced that monthly cloud hours would take effect in November 2026: 5 hours on Essential, 10 on Premium, and 15 on Ultimate. Xbox also announced an option beginning in November to purchase cloud playtime and stream eligible games a player owns without a Game Pass subscription. These are announced future changes, not a description of service behavior before their start date. The Xbox page says cloud gaming is not included with PC Game Pass.
PlayStation cloud streaming
PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming is available only for eligible games and in supported territories. Sony lists a minimum connection speed of 5 Mbps, or 15 Mbps for 1080p, and excludes overseas territories on the referenced US page. Check territory and device eligibility as well as your connection before choosing Premium for streaming.
How to choose without paying for the wrong catalog
- Start with your hardware. Choose among services that support the console or PC you already use; a catalog you cannot play does not help.
- Write down the games. Pick three to five titles you genuinely want to try rather than deciding from a headline catalog count.
- Check live availability. Verify each game’s current catalog listing, platform, region, and required plan. Games can rotate out, and catalog availability varies.
- Decide what “try” means. For day-one releases on supported Xbox or PC, compare Ultimate and PC Game Pass. For a rotating PlayStation library, compare Extra. For selected timed PlayStation trials, consider Premium.
- Compare the cost for your likely play period. Use the local checkout price, including applicable taxes and any promotion, rather than assuming US pricing applies to you.
Microsoft’s US plan page listed 50+ games for Essential, 200+ for Premium, 500+ for Ultimate, and 300+ PC games for PC Game Pass when checked October 7, 2026. These are Microsoft’s plan-page counts, not an independent measure of how many games will suit you; Microsoft says availability and counts vary. Sony describes Extra as offering hundreds of Game Catalog games. Neither count replaces checking the titles you want.
