If an AI detector flags your writing, treat the result as a claim to review—not proof that you used AI. Save the work and existing drafts, read the notice and the applicable policy, then explain your writing process and ask for the concern to be assessed alongside the actual work and other evidence. Follow the deadline and response procedure in the notice; they vary by institution.
What an AI detector result does—and does not—show
A detector produces an estimate based on patterns in text. It does not establish who wrote a passage or prove misconduct. Turnitin says its model can misidentify human-written, AI-generated, and AI-paraphrased text, and that the result should not be the sole basis for adverse action against a student. Turnitin’s AI Writing Report guide describes its percentage as the share of qualifying prose that its model identifies as potentially AI-generated or AI-generated and modified using a paraphraser or bypasser. Qualifying text means prose sentences in long-form writing; it is not necessarily a score for every part of a submission.
A score is not the probability that your particular submission was written by AI. Australia’s Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) cautions that detector estimates can be wrong, including in mixed, edited, or short-text conditions, and that a score alone is insufficient evidence for an allegation. Its hypothetical example of a 1% false-positive rate illustrates why even a seemingly low rate could flag work in a group where no one used AI; it is not a measured rate for a particular detector. TEQSA’s academic-integrity toolkit recommends considering evidence that could disconfirm AI use as well as evidence that might confirm it.
Turnitin’s current guide also describes product-specific report behavior: it suppresses scores and highlights for results above 0% but below 20% to reduce the risk of false-positive misinterpretation. This is a display threshold, not a general accuracy boundary. Reports generated before July 8, 2024 may still show a numerical score below 20%. The guide says a submission needs at least 300 words of long-form prose to generate an AI Writing Report. These details apply to Turnitin’s product and may change; they do not explain how other detectors work.

What to do if your writing is flagged
- Preserve what already exists. Save a copy of the submitted version and gather genuine drafts, outlines, notes, source records, and available document version history. Do not edit, backdate, or create records to make them look like evidence. A writing timeline may help explain how your work developed, but no single record guarantees a particular outcome. TEQSA discusses verifiable version history as evidence of the process of compiling work; Washington University in St. Louis’s Office of the Provost lists drafts, notes, outlines, and version history as material a student can discuss.
- Read the notice and policy carefully. Identify what is being alleged, what response is requested, and the stated deadline. Check your institution’s current academic-integrity and AI-use policies, including any rules about permitted tools and disclosure. If anything is unclear, ask the instructor or named office what information is being considered and what response steps are available. There is no universal deadline or appeal route.
- Ask for a contextual review. Explain calmly that detector results can be mistaken, and ask that the concern be assessed alongside the submitted work, its sources, your drafts and writing history, and a discussion of your argument. Turnitin says its result should not be the sole basis for adverse action. Washington University likewise advises instructors not to base an accusation solely on an AI detection tool. The instructor or reviewer—not Turnitin—makes a misconduct determination under the institution’s policy.
- Explain your actual writing process. Be specific and truthful: describe when you worked, how your argument developed, which sources you used, and what writing or translation tools you used. If you used AI assistance, explain what you used it for and whether you disclosed it as required by the course rules. Do not claim a tool was unused if it was used.
- Keep a clear record and meet the stated steps. When practical, communicate in writing, keep copies of your messages and submitted materials, and follow the notice’s instructions and deadlines. If the possible consequences are serious, you can ask whether support is available through an adviser, student union, ombuds office, or another institution-specific service. Availability and role vary.
How to explain your case clearly
A concise, factual response is generally more useful than arguing about a detector’s score in isolation. You might write:
“I’m concerned that the detector result may not reflect how I wrote this submission. I can provide my existing drafts, notes, sources, and document history, and explain how I developed the argument and what tools I used. Please let me know which policy and response process apply, what material is being considered, and the deadline for my response.”

Adapt the wording to your circumstances. Do not attach sensitive records unnecessarily; ask how the institution wants supporting materials submitted. If you have relevant drafts or version history, describe what they show rather than presenting them as conclusive proof.
What not to do
- Do not treat the score as a verdict. Ask what evidence and policy are being used, and respond to the allegation through the stated process.
- Do not alter or manufacture evidence. Preserve records as they are. Inconsistent or fabricated material can undermine an otherwise reasonable explanation.
- Do not rewrite naturally written work just to “beat” a detector or add deliberate errors. That does not address the policy question and could make the work harder to evaluate.
- Do not use a consumer detector as an authorship certificate. TEQSA cautions that unlicensed use of free or personal-subscription third-party detection services may conflict with privacy, IT, intellectual-property, or copyright rules. Avoid uploading confidential work unless you are authorized and understand how the service handles it.
- Do not ask ChatGPT to certify that it wrote or did not write a passage. OpenAI says ChatGPT has no reliable knowledge of whether it generated a particular text and may invent an answer.
If the flag is outside school
For a workplace, publisher, or other organization, use that organization’s review process rather than assuming academic procedures apply. Preserve genuine records, ask what policy and evidence are involved, and explain your process accurately. A detector signal remains different from proof of authorship, but deadlines, disclosure rules, and available support depend on the organization.

Why human review matters
OpenAI’s educator guidance says its own detector research did not find detectors reliable enough for decisions with lasting consequences. OpenAI reported that its attempted detector labeled human-written text—including Shakespeare and the Declaration of Independence—as AI-generated, and noted indications of disproportionate impact on English learners and on particularly formulaic or concise writing. Those are OpenAI’s statements about its own research, not a measured error rate for every current detector. OpenAI’s guidance for educators and TEQSA both support caution and contextual assessment rather than relying on a detector score alone.
