Use your Linux distribution’s package manager for the operating system and applications supplied by its configured repositories. For Dell-specific updates on a PowerEdge server, check Dell System Update (DSU) and the applicable Dell catalog or repository. They serve different update sources and components, so one is not a universal replacement for the other. For Dell client computers, Dell Command | Update (DCU) is a separate utility; confirm that your model and operating system are supported before using it.
What each update tool handles
Linux distribution package managers
Tools such as apt, dnf, and zypper install and update packages available from the repositories configured for the Linux distribution. Use the package manager for the OS packages and applications it manages. Its repository role does not establish that it supplies every update specific to your Dell model or hardware.
Dell System Update
Dell describes DSU as a script-optimized deployment tool for applying Dell Update Packages (DUPs) to PowerEdge servers. Dell’s DSU 2.2.0.0 guide covers application, firmware, and driver updates for Linux and Windows, selected from a catalog or repository. DSU supports online and offline workflows and scripting, making it relevant to catalog-based or repeated server deployments. See Dell’s DSU guide.
Support depends on the DSU release and operating system. Dell says DSU 2.2.0.0 no longer supports ESXi; its support page identifies 2.1.1.0 as the last DSU release supporting ESXi 7.0 U3. The support page lists Linux versions including RHEL 8.10, 9.4, 9.6, and 10; SLES 15 SP5, 15 SP6, and 16; and Ubuntu 22.04.2 and 24.04. Dell says DSU is designed to work with community distributions such as Debian, but Debian is not included in the page’s enumerated validated OS list. Treat these as release-specific details and check the current DSU support information for your system and release.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Dell Command | Update
DCU is a different Dell utility for supported client systems. Dell documents it for identifying, applying, and scheduling driver, BIOS, firmware, and application updates, with user-interface and command-line workflows. It is not interchangeable with DSU, and Dell’s client utility documentation is not a blanket statement that DCU supports Linux clients. Check the exact model and environment in Dell’s DCU reference guide and Dell’s DCU usage article.
Which should you use?
| Situation | Best starting point | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Linux desktop or laptop; OS packages and applications | Your distribution’s package manager | It handles packages from configured distribution repositories; do not assume it covers every model-specific firmware update. |
| Dell PowerEdge server running Linux; Dell-supplied firmware, drivers, or other DUPs | Check DSU and the applicable Dell catalog or repository | Confirm the server model and the DSU release’s operating-system support. |
| Dell client computer; driver, BIOS, or firmware workflow | Check Dell Command | Update | DCU applies only where the system and operating environment are supported. Do not assume a Windows client utility applies to Linux. |
| Dell computer running Linux; BIOS update | Use Dell’s model-appropriate Linux BIOS instructions | USB update media is one route; FOTA/Remote Update is conditional on support for the exact model. |
| Mixed server fleet, offline image, or scripted rollout | Evaluate Dell’s catalog, repository, and DSU workflow | Validate the DSU release, OS, and component applicability before deployment. |
How to update a Dell BIOS from Linux
Dell says its BIOS update .exe files do not run directly on Ubuntu or other Linux distributions. Its Linux BIOS instructions describe two alternatives. Choose based on the computer’s model support, not on the assumption that all Dell systems offer both methods.

Option 1: Update using USB media
- Find the BIOS update for your exact Dell computer model and follow Dell’s model-specific instructions.
- Prepare a bootable USB flash drive. Dell lists a minimum capacity of 512 MB and requires access to BIOS setup for this procedure.
- Boot the computer from the USB media and complete the update by following the on-screen process.
Option 2: Use FOTA or Remote Update when supported
Dell documents an over-the-air route for computers that support Firmware Update-Over-the-Air (FOTA) or Remote Update. Dell describes newer computers, typically from 2020 or later, as candidates, but age alone does not confirm support. Check your exact model’s instructions in Dell’s Linux BIOS update article.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check the package and system before applying an update
A Dell Update Package is a self-contained executable package for an individual software element; Dell lists BIOS, system firmware, and device drivers among its package types. Dell says DUPs are digitally signed using SHA256 or greater, and that signature and hash validation take place before installation. An invalid package will not install. This validation does not remove the need to choose a package for the detected system and read its prerequisites. Details are in Dell’s DUP documentation.
