On-site generation and battery storage may add flexibility and resilience; whether they make a project faster, cheaper, or more reliable depends on its location and design. The title could also refer to BtMData, a company focused on powered sites and AI-factory readiness, so the distinction matters.
What BTM means in this context
Behind-the-meter (BTM) power generally refers to generation or storage located on the customer’s side of the electricity meter, rather than power delivered solely through the utility grid. For an AI factory, that could mean combining on-site generation and batteries with grid electricity. The available evidence supports this as the likely meaning of BTM in the title, but does not confirm it was the intended expansion.
BtMData is a separate company. It describes services for identifying and assessing industrial sites with contracted power, alongside energy and regulatory compliance software, demand management, transformation advisory, and AI-factory-readiness certification. Where behind-the-meter power may help
Power access is a significant constraint when choosing sites for large AI data centers. DigitalBridge’s June 2025 analysis says a 100 MW hyperscale data-center campus can consume as much electricity as 80,000 homes. Brookfield’s August 2025 investor analysis argues that modular on-site power may help data-center developers accelerate timelines and scale capacity. It also describes how pairing behind-the-meter generation with storage could help manage changing demand, accommodate intermittent renewables, and support resilience during peak GPU loads or outages. The practical case for BTM is therefore strongest when a project needs more flexibility than its available grid supply can provide, or when on-site resources can address a specific reliability or capacity need. That does not establish that BTM will be faster or less expensive than a grid connection in every location.

What BTM does not solve
Power is only one part of making an AI factory operational. A project also needs a viable route through permitting and interconnection, suitable cooling, high-capacity connectivity, an industrially appropriate site, and a plan for reliable operation. A power arrangement cannot by itself resolve those constraints.
Deutsche Telekom’s Munich Industrial AI Cloud illustrates the number of elements involved in an operating facility. In its April 2026 announcement, the company said it modernized an existing data center, installed high-performance fiber connectivity, used water from the nearby Eisbach in its cooling concept, and powered the site entirely with renewable energy. These are operator-reported details; the announcement does not establish that the facility uses a behind-the-meter arrangement. Deutsche Telekom’s announcement

How to compare grid, BTM, and hybrid options
Compare the alternatives against the same project requirements. A hybrid arrangement may combine grid supply with on-site generation or storage, but its value still depends on the site, equipment, permits, and operating plan.

This framework is more useful than treating “BTM” as a yes-or-no answer. A project should establish what capacity is deliverable, when it will be available, how the system behaves under stress, and what the full project costs before selecting a power strategy.

What the Munich AI factory example shows
Deutsche Telekom reported that its Munich Industrial AI Cloud was operating and serving customers in April 2026. The company said the facility had nearly 10,000 NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs, computing power of up to 0.5 exaFLOPS, and was operating above one-third of capacity with existing customers. These are operator-reported specifications and operating figures.
The example shows an operating AI factory built by modernizing an existing data center, with renewable-energy supply, fiber connectivity, and a water-based cooling concept. It is not evidence that behind-the-meter power is necessary or that BTM alone enables an AI factory. Deutsche Telekom CEO Tim Höttges said, “We are proving here that Europe can do AI.”
