Most small businesses that go looking for an alternative to centralized device management really want one of two things: to protect company data on employees’ personal phones without controlling the whole device, or to swap their current management service for a different one. They are different problems with different answers. App-level protection is a lighter-touch option, but it is not a full substitute for fleet-wide configuration, inventory, updates and support.

First, decide which “alternative” you need

Centralized device management means an administrator console that enrolls devices and pushes policies, apps and updates to them. You can step away from it in two ways:

  • Manage less of the device. Control work apps, accounts and data, and leave the rest of the device alone. This suits employee-owned phones.
  • Manage differently. Use a different provider, or controls already bundled with your productivity suite or Apple’s tooling. This is still central management. You are only changing who provides it.

The trade-off is straightforward. Moving control from the whole device to apps, accounts and data improves privacy for employees. It also costs you device-wide visibility and configuration.

Comparison of the main approaches

Approach Best fit What to verify before relying on it
App and data-level controls for BYOD Personal devices where protecting work accounts and data is the priority Supported apps and OS versions, selective wipe behavior, access requirements, and any leftover desktop or mobile management needs
Endpoint controls in your existing suite Small teams already on Google Workspace or a similar suite Subscription edition, platform coverage, policy depth, enrollment, audit and reporting needs
Apple-native management and User Enrollment Apple-heavy teams, especially where BYOD data separation matters Current product availability, region, device eligibility, enrollment flow, management scope
Another centralized cross-platform service Mixed fleets, or teams that need shared policies, inventory and software deployment OS support, identity integration, app and patch workflows, reporting, service tiers, migration effort

Current vendor documentation is the main evidence for these options. There is no independent price or performance ranking among them, so the choice should follow your requirements rather than a “best” label.

Option 1: Protect apps and accounts on BYOD devices

Microsoft’s Intune documentation separates mobile device management (MDM), which brings the whole device under management, from mobile application management (MAM) or app protection. Microsoft describes MAM as typical for personal-device BYOD scenarios. The company controls how work apps handle data, and the device itself stays the employee’s.

Google documents a similar idea with selective account wipe on Android and iOS. Removing a departing employee’s work account and its data does not require erasing the phone.

Intune is itself a centralized service. It is useful here for explaining the concept, not as a decentralized alternative.

Where this works well

  • Staff use personal phones for email, chat, calendar and files.
  • Your main risk is company data leaving through those apps.
  • You want to avoid seeing or wiping personal content.

Where it falls short

  • It does not configure Wi-Fi, VPN, disk encryption or OS updates across a fleet.
  • Protection covers only the apps and data flows that support it. List which apps staff actually use for work and check each one.
  • Company laptops and shared devices usually still need fuller management.

Option 2: Use controls already in your productivity suite

Google also says agentless endpoint management can enforce passcodes and wipe specific accounts without installing a management app on a user’s Android or iOS device. That makes it a good lighter-touch route for data protection.

Google Workspace Help lists the supported editions. It says basic mobile management is on by default, while advanced mobile management adds more security options and tools. Do not assume a specific feature is included. Confirm your edition and look at the relevant Admin console settings first. Also do not assume every feature behaves identically on each operating system.

Option 3: Apple’s built-in management for Apple fleets

Apple documents device management for organizations and User Enrollment for employee-owned devices. Apple says User Enrollment is designed for BYOD and cryptographically separates work data from personal data. Its security overview explains that management services can protect corporate information on employee-provided devices.

This is a strong model for Apple-heavy small businesses that want privacy-respecting BYOD. Before committing, confirm:

Option 4: Switch to a different centralized provider

If you still need shared policies, inventory, software deployment or fleet-wide administration, you probably need central management. Replacing the vendor is more accurate than going decentralized.

JumpCloud is one example. It describes its unified endpoint management as covering macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS/iPadOS and Android, with real-time monitoring and alerting. Its Apple MDM page ties device management to identity and access management. These are vendor-described features, not independent test results. Current plan limits, prices and feature-by-feature comparisons with competitors are not established in the sources reviewed, so get a current quote and trial it against your own checklist.

This route makes most sense for mixed Windows, macOS, Linux and mobile fleets, or when you want device and identity administration in one place.

How to choose

  1. List who owns what. Split devices into company-owned and employee-owned.
  2. Define required outcomes. Examples are screen lock, remote wipe of work data, encrypted storage, patch visibility, software deployment and audit reports.
  3. Match the control level to ownership. Personal devices lean toward app, account or User Enrollment controls. Company laptops usually warrant fuller management.
  4. Check your current plan. Review the edition and Admin console settings in your suite before adding a service.
  5. Test the privacy question. For each option, find out what administrators can see, what they can remove, and whether a selective work-data wipe exists.
  6. Estimate the workload. Consider how much administration time a small team can realistically spend, and what migration would involve.

Quick scenarios

  • Ten people, personal phones, Google Workspace: start with the endpoint controls already in your edition, including selective account wipe.
  • Mostly iPhones and Macs, some BYOD: look at Apple’s User Enrollment for personal devices and organizational management for company ones.
  • Mixed Windows, Mac, Linux and mobile with shared policies: evaluate a cross-platform central service such as JumpCloud.

The Bottom Line

For personal phones, protect work apps, accounts and data with selective wipe instead of managing the whole device. For Google Workspace or Apple-centric teams, check what your current plan already provides. Choose another centralized service only when you need fleet-wide policies, inventory and software deployment. Confirm editions, regional availability and pricing with each vendor before you decide, because these change.
