A lower sticker price is a poor deal if key features need an unexpected subscription, the device will not connect to your setup, or support ends sooner than you expect.
Check whether the exact model works in your home
Start with the model number and hardware revision, not just the product name or category. Then verify compatibility with the app and smart-home platform you use, any required hub or controller, and the connection the device needs, such as Wi-Fi or Thread. A device can support a standard yet still lack support for a particular category or platform.
Google advises buyers to look for Matter and connectivity logos on packaging or product pages. Matter can help with interoperability, but support varies by device category and platform and can change. Check Google’s current Matter compatibility guidance and the manufacturer’s page for the exact model; do not treat a Matter logo as proof that every feature will work with your setup.
- Confirm the device category is supported by your platform.
- Check whether a compatible hub or controller is required.
- Verify Wi-Fi band or Thread requirements against your home network and equipment.
- Check whether the features you want depend on an account, cloud connection, or subscription.
Find out how long updates will be provided
Look for a specific software or security update duration, or a stated end date, and check how updates are delivered. The manufacturer’s support page is often more useful than a discount listing. If the seller or manufacturer does not publish the information, treat the support horizon as unknown rather than assuming updates will continue.

In a 2024 review of 184 smart products, Federal Trade Commission staff found that 161 product webpages did not state an update-support duration or end date. Basic internet searches also did not uncover support information for 124 of the 184 products. These figures describe the products and search method in that review, not every smart device currently on sale. The FTC explains the findings and why support disclosure matters in its 2024 announcement.
Ask: “How long will the company provide software updates?” Also check whether updates are automatic or require you to install them, and whether the published commitment covers security fixes as well as feature updates.

Review account, security, and privacy requirements
Check whether setup requires an account or app, what authentication options are available, and whether you can change default credentials. Look at the app’s requested permissions and the product’s privacy information for what data it collects, how it is used, and whether remote access or other features can be turned off.
The FTC recommends changing default credentials, enabling two-factor authentication where offered, using available security features, and keeping firmware and apps updated. Its connected-device security guidance covers those steps. The FTC also advises consumers to review privacy settings and permissions, particularly when setting up an installed or previously owned device.

- Check whether the app or device permits a unique password and two-factor authentication.
- Review app permissions and the device’s data collection and sharing disclosures.
- Find out whether remote access is optional and how to disable it.
- Check whether the product can still perform the features you need if its cloud service or internet connection is unavailable.
Apply extra scrutiny to cameras
A camera can expose private spaces or footage if its account, network, or remote-access settings are weak. Before buying, check whether the manufacturer describes encryption for account information, livestreams, and recordings. Decide where the camera will point and whether you need remote viewing enabled. Secure your home Wi-Fi and keep the camera’s firmware current. The FTC’s guidance for connected cameras provides additional precautions.
Check ongoing costs, warranty, and support
Compare what the sale price buys with the features you will actually use. Some functions may depend on a paid service, an active cloud account, or continuing internet access; confirm the requirements for the exact model rather than assuming they apply to every device in its category.

Read the warranty, return conditions, and support terms, paying particular attention to open-box, refurbished, discontinued, or installed devices. For a device that has already been in someone else’s home, check whether warranty and support transfer. Reset it to factory settings, review its privacy settings and permissions, and install available updates before using it.

NIST’s 2025 survey covered 401 U.S. smart-home users with devices in five categories: lighting, security devices, sensors, thermostats, and voice assistants. That describes the survey sample; it is not a population-wide statistic or a finding about every buyer. No market-wide rate of support, failure, or compromise follows from those figures.
