Not yet. Astronomers can measure clues in the atmospheres of some exoplanets, but no observation has confirmed life beyond Earth. A possible biosignature—a feature that could be associated with life—must be checked against nonbiological explanations and supported by reproducible, independent evidence.

How can astronomers look for life on an exoplanet?

For some planets, scientists analyze starlight that passes through the planet’s atmosphere as it crosses in front of its star. This method, called transit spectroscopy, compares the light at different wavelengths: atmospheric molecules absorb particular wavelengths, leaving patterns that can be matched against molecular signatures and atmospheric models. NASA likens the resulting spectrum to a barcode of atmospheric composition. The method reveals atmospheric clues, not life itself. NASA’s overview of the search for life explains how Webb observations can identify molecules such as water vapor, methane, and carbon dioxide in some exoplanet atmospheres.

Other proposed remote clues include the way a planet reflects or scatters light from its surface, changes in its signal over time, and possible technosignatures. These approaches have different observational and interpretive challenges; none turns a single measurement into a verdict. A review of remotely detectable biosignatures describes the range of atmospheric and surface possibilities. Schwieterman and coauthors’ review

What the measurement can—and cannot—show

A spectral feature may be consistent with a molecule, but the result depends on the observed wavelength range, instrument noise, data processing, and the atmospheric models used to interpret the data. Clouds can hide atmospheric features, and activity or spots on the host star can contaminate the measured signal. The planet’s atmosphere also records its history and present environment, not simply whether life is there now.

NASA notes that the signals of interest for small, potentially habitable planets around cool stars can be significantly smaller than 200 parts per million, and that investigating some candidate targets may require hundreds of hours of Webb observing time. These are descriptions of the observational challenge, not a universal threshold or guaranteed observing schedule. Webb was not designed as a dedicated life-detection observatory. What counts as a biosignature?

A biosignature is a feature that may indicate life, but it is not necessarily produced only by life. Scientists have discussed gases such as oxygen, ozone, methane, and water as potential clues. Their significance depends on what else is present and whether the planet and its star could produce the same signal through nonbiological chemistry.

Possible clue Why scientists consider it Why it is not proof of life
Oxygen or ozone These oxygen-bearing molecules can be relevant to biological activity and atmospheric chemistry. Ultraviolet-driven reactions can produce oxygen-bearing species without life in some environments. The star’s radiation and the planet’s atmospheric chemistry affect whether they accumulate.
Methane It may contribute to a potentially informative combination of atmospheric gases. Nonbiological processes can also produce methane, so its source must be evaluated in planetary context.
Water vapor It can help characterize atmospheric composition and conditions. Its presence alone does not establish habitability or biological activity.

NASA’s guidance is explicit: “Context is key – we can’t just look for oxygen, ozone, or methane alone.” The planet’s atmosphere, surface, host star and radiation, and geological or chemical processes all affect the interpretation. Gas combinations and chemical disequilibrium may be more informative than one isolated molecule, but they still require models and follow-up. NASA’s discussion of context and false positives

How do scientists test for false positives?

A false positive is a signal that appears compatible with life but can be explained by a nonbiological process. Oxygen is a useful example: ultraviolet light can break apart carbon dioxide or water, producing oxygen-bearing products without biology. Whether those products build up or are destroyed depends on the atmosphere and the host star’s radiation.

To evaluate competing explanations, scientists model the planet’s chemistry and consider multiple measurements together. Relevant clues may include oxygen or ozone alongside methane, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide, as well as the host star’s spectrum and the planet’s wider environment. The point is not to find one magic molecule, but to test whether the proposed biological explanation fits better than plausible abiotic alternatives. NASA identifies photochemical context, stellar noise, and quantitative uncertainty as continuing needs for the field. NASA Exoplanet Exploration Program, ExEP Science Gap List, Revision I, released March 31, 2026

Candidate signal, potential biosignature, confirmed life

  • Candidate signal: A feature in the data that may be consistent with a molecule or other phenomenon, but needs validation and interpretation.
  • Potential biosignature: A measured feature that could be associated with life, while nonbiological sources remain under consideration.
  • Confirmed life: A conclusion supported by robust, reproducible evidence and serious testing of alternative explanations—not by detecting one gas.

NASA’s Ladder of Life Detection offers a framework for discussing how specifically a measurement points to life and how it can be measured. NASA cautions that it is not a definitive ranking or an endorsement of a particular biosignature or instrument; the order can depend on the environment. NASA Science, Ladder of Life Detection

What does the debated case of K2-18 b show?

K2-18 b illustrates why a reported molecular clue is not the same as a life detection. NASA reported methane and carbon dioxide in early JWST observations of the planet and described a possible dimethyl sulfide (DMS) signal as tentative. Subsequent analyses have disagreed about what the spectra establish.

A 2025 peer-reviewed reanalysis of JWST NIRISS and NIRSpec transmission spectra reported methane, but found no statistically significant or reliable evidence for carbon dioxide or DMS in those data. A separate 2025 analysis assessed the DMS/DMDS claim against standards of evidence for life and reported that 87.5% of retrievals using the authors’ preferred MIRI binning scheme did not favor DMS/DMDS. That percentage describes that paper’s analysis and binning choice; it is not a community-wide consensus or a probability that life exists on the planet. Schmidt and coauthors’ 2025 reanalysis; “K2-18b Does Not Meet the Standards of Evidence for Life”

Results can depend on the spectral range, instrument noise, data reduction, molecules included in retrievals, and atmospheric models tested. A preference among a limited set of models does not by itself prove that a molecule is present, let alone that life produced it. A 2025 perspective on searches in the JWST era emphasizes that spectra can admit multiple interpretations and that researchers should not expect one definitive “silver bullet” gas. Seager and coauthors, “Prospects for Detecting Signs of Life on Exoplanets in the JWST Era”

How should readers judge a claim of life beyond Earth?

A credible claim should be judged by the strength of the measurement and the alternatives it has ruled out, not just by the name of a molecule or the excitement of a headline. Useful questions include:

  • Is the signal robust? Does it persist with independent data reductions and retrieval methods?
  • Is the molecule identified specifically? Have overlapping spectral features and competing molecular explanations been considered?
  • Is the proposed chemistry plausible? Could the star’s radiation or nonbiological atmospheric and geological processes produce the signal?
  • Is there enough system context? Are complementary gases and planetary properties measured well enough to test the proposed chemistry?
  • Has it been independently checked? Do repeat observations or measurements from other instruments agree?
  • Are uncertainties clear? Are noise, assumptions, and competing model fits reported?

These checks reflect NASA’s call for contextual, statistical assessment and the methodological issues highlighted by the K2-18 b analyses. A strong case would need converging lines of evidence and follow-up, rather than reliance on a single spectrum or study. NASA ExEP Science Gap List; Schmidt and coauthors; 2025 K2-18 b analysis

What could improve the search?

The planned Habitable Worlds Observatory is intended to directly image and search for chemical traces on Earth-like planets around Sun-like stars. It is a future facility in development, not an operating capability. NASA’s 2026 science-gap list identifies further work on cataloguing biosignatures and false positives, modeling star–planet photochemistry, assessing stellar contamination, investigating surface and time-varying biosignatures, and building statistical approaches that quantify uncertainty.
