A Samsung Galaxy can receive security updates after it stops receiving major Android version upgrades. The two updates do different jobs: an Android upgrade moves the phone to a newer operating-system generation, while a security update applies security fixes without necessarily changing the Android version.
What’s the difference between Android updates and security updates?
An Android version update advances the phone to a newer major Android release. Eligible Galaxy models may also receive a corresponding One UI generation. A security update is a maintenance release focused on security fixes; it does not, by itself, mean the phone has moved to a new Android version. Samsung describes these as separate types of software updates in its Galaxy software update guidance.
- Android version: identifies the major operating-system generation installed on the phone.
- Security support: concerns delivery of security maintenance patches, which may arrive without a new Android version.
Will my Samsung phone still get security updates after Android updates stop?
It may. Samsung treats OS-upgrade eligibility and security-update support as separate commitments, so a phone can reach its final major Android upgrade while remaining within its security-support period. The exact duration and patch cadence depend on the model and product cohort; an OS-upgrade promise alone does not establish how long security patches will continue or how frequently they will arrive.
Samsung’s published commitments have changed over time and apply to specified groups of devices, not every Galaxy:

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
| Samsung announcement | Published commitment | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 2020 | Up to three generations of Android OS upgrades | For select Galaxy devices; this is not a promise for every model. Samsung’s 2020 announcement |
| 2021 | At least four years of security updates | For the Galaxy products described as launched since 2019. Samsung said delivery could be monthly, quarterly, or biannual, with availability depending on device and market. Samsung’s 2021 announcement |
| 2022 | Up to four generations of Android OS and One UI upgrades, and up to five years of security updates | For select devices; the maximum is not a universal Galaxy guarantee. Samsung’s 2022 announcement |
| 2025 report | Security-update support for mobile devices of up to seven years | Samsung’s sustainability report says availability and timing of OS upgrades and security updates may vary by product and market. Samsung 2025 Sustainability Report |
These figures describe different announcements, years, and eligible cohorts. They should not be combined into a single support promise for all Galaxy phones. For a specific device, check Samsung’s current security-update scope, which lists model-specific coverage and cadence. Samsung says rollout timing and availability can vary by product and market.
How often does Samsung release Galaxy security patches?
There is no single cadence for every Galaxy. Samsung’s published materials describe monthly, quarterly, or biannual security-update delivery for different devices or cohorts. The current cadence for a particular model should be verified on Samsung’s live security-update scope; an older announcement does not establish a model’s current listing.

- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
How do I check for updates on my Samsung Galaxy?
- Check the installed Android version: open Settings > About phone > Software information. The exact labels may vary by device.
- Check for available software: open Settings > Software update and follow the on-screen prompts. A security update can be available even when the Android version does not change.
- Verify continuing support: look up the exact model on Samsung’s Mobile Security page to see whether it is listed and what cadence Samsung currently states.
Samsung’s support guidance, updated July 2, 2026, notes that update type and version depend on the model, and rollouts may differ by location and carrier. Older hardware may also be unable to install the latest Android version.

Samsung notes that availability and timing can vary by product and market, and that rollout stages can depend on location and carrier. A policy announcement is useful context, but the exact model listing is the better guide to a phone’s support.
