To pair AirPods with an iPhone, open the case with the earbuds inside and hold it near the iPhone, then tap Connect when the setup animation appears. To pair with a Mac, Android phone, or another Bluetooth device, put the AirPods into pairing mode and select them in that device’s Bluetooth settings. The exact pairing control depends on the AirPods model.
Pair AirPods with an iPhone
- Go to the iPhone Home Screen.
- With the AirPods in their case, open the lid and hold the case next to the iPhone.
- When the setup animation appears, tap Connect and follow any on-screen prompts. Tap Done when setup finishes.
If the animation does not appear, put the AirPods into pairing mode using the control for your model. On the iPhone, open Settings > Bluetooth, then select the AirPods when they appear. See Apple’s iPhone setup instructions for current model-specific steps.
If the AirPods belonged to someone else, the previous owner must remove them from their Apple Account before a new user can pair and use them. After setup, AirPods may become available automatically on supported devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Compatibility and features vary by model and required operating-system version; check Apple’s current instructions for your model.
Pair AirPods with a Mac
If they are already set up with your iPhone
If your AirPods are set up with an iPhone and your Mac uses the same Apple Account, put the AirPods in your ears and look for them in Control Centre > Sound. Select them if they are not already the active audio output.

Pair them directly through Bluetooth
- On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth and confirm Bluetooth is on.
- Open the AirPods case with the earbuds inside, then use the pairing control for your model until the status light flashes white.
- When the AirPods appear under nearby devices, click Connect.
- If sound still comes from the Mac speakers, select the AirPods as the sound output.

Connect AirPods to Android or another Bluetooth device
- Turn on Bluetooth in the other device’s settings.
- With the AirPods in their case, open the lid and put them into pairing mode using the control for your model.
- Select the AirPods when they appear in the device’s Bluetooth list.
Apple describes non-Apple use as Bluetooth headset use: you can listen and talk, but Siri is not available.

Find the pairing control for your AirPods model
There is not one pairing gesture that applies to every AirPods generation. Apple’s current setup instructions distinguish among these controls:
- Models with a case setup button: Press and hold the button until the status light flashes white.
- Specified newer models: Double-tap the front of the case until the status light flashes white.
- AirPods Max: Use the listening-mode button to enter pairing mode.
Use the instructions for your exact model rather than trying every control. Apple’s setup guide and iPhone guide describe the applicable controls.

Switch AirPods between devices after pairing
Pairing connects the AirPods to a device; switching chooses which already-paired device plays audio. Supported AirPods can switch automatically among supported Apple devices when those devices use the same Apple Account with two-factor authentication. You can also choose the AirPods manually from the audio-output or Bluetooth controls on the device you want to use.
