If you run an affected Atlassian Data Center product, restrict external access where possible, install the fixed version for your release line or later, and have your security team check access logs for suspicious traversal requests. Atlassian says its CVE-2026-21589 flaw can expose a specific file inside the web application root only if an attacker already knows its exact name and path; it does not let attackers list or enumerate directories. The advisory does not establish whether any individual customer instance was accessed, so you will need to investigate your own systems.
First, determine whether this applies to your deployment
Atlassian released its CVE-2026-21589 advisory on 5 October 2026. It covers Data Center deployments of the products below. Atlassian lists all versions as affected; use the fixed-version table to identify the applicable release line.
- Bitbucket Data Center
- Confluence Data Center
- Jira Service Management Data Center
- Jira Software Data Center
- Bamboo Data Center
- Crowd Data Center
- Crucible
- Fisheye
Confirm the product, deployment model, installed version, internet exposure, and whether the installation is clustered. Atlassian rates the issue Critical, with a CVSS 4.0 score of 9.3; that is the vendor’s severity rating, not a finding that your specific instance was compromised.
For Atlassian Cloud, the vendor says affected Cloud products were patched, its investigation found no evidence of exploitation, and no Cloud customer action is required for this advisory. That statement does not apply to Data Center deployments.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Restrict exposure, then patch
Contain external access
If an affected instance is publicly accessible, restrict it from external network access until it is patched or mitigated, where possible. Atlassian recommends this even if the instance requires users to authenticate. Coordinate the restriction with the teams that depend on the service, and check whether every node or mirror is covered.
Install the fixed release for your product
Patch to the listed fixed version for the release line you run, or a later version. The versions below are those listed by Atlassian in its advisory released 5 October 2026; verify the current advisory before changing production because remediation details can change.

If you cannot patch immediately, use a temporary mitigation
Atlassian describes product-dependent temporary controls. Treat them as a bridge to a fixed release, not a substitute for patching. Follow the vendor’s current configuration instructions rather than copying a rule into production without testing it.
WAF or proxy rule
Atlassian provides a rule intended to block traversal patterns where .. is immediately adjacent to /, \, or ::, including encoded forms. The rule must be implemented for your particular WAF or proxy. Test that it blocks the relevant paths and correctly handles URL-encoded patterns; do not assume a rule that matches plain text also catches encoded requests.

Tomcat RewriteValve
The advisory provides RewriteValve instructions for Confluence, Jira Service Management, Jira Software, Bamboo, and Crowd. Back up the relevant configuration, apply the change on every Data Center node, and restart each node as directed by Atlassian.
Bitbucket rewrite rule
For Bitbucket, Atlassian provides a urlrewrite.xml rule. In clustered deployments, apply it to every node and to mirror and mirror-farm nodes, then restart Bitbucket Data Center as directed.

Atlassian cannot confirm whether a particular customer’s instance was affected and asks customers to investigate all affected instances. Have your security team review the access logs using one of the vendor’s suggested approaches:

A match is a reason to investigate, not proof by itself that a file was successfully read. Review surrounding requests and other available system evidence to determine whether access occurred, which file may have been involved, and whether it contained sensitive information. The advisory does not identify affected customer instances or establish what an attacker did with any accessed file.
Assess what may have been exposed before changing credentials
The advisory concerns file access; it does not say that customer passwords, sessions, or API tokens were compromised. Do not rotate credentials indiscriminately on the assumption that this vulnerability automatically exposed them. If your investigation finds token exposure or suspicious token activity, an organization admin can review API token activity in Atlassian Administration at Insights > API token activity and revoke the relevant token. Revocation permanently deletes the token and cannot be undone.
Escalate and handle communications carefully
For questions or concerns about CVE-2026-21589, Atlassian directs customers to raise a support request. If your team needs help applying mitigations or investigating evidence, involve your security responders or a qualified incident-response specialist.
Atlassian describes its own incident process as detection and analysis, severity categorization, containment, eradication and recovery, relevant notifications, and post-incident review. It says it aims to notify a customer without undue delay if that customer’s data is involved in a confirmed incident; initial details may be limited and expanded as they become available. This describes Atlassian’s process, not whether your organization has a legal or contractual duty to notify others. Assess those obligations with your legal and privacy teams based on the facts of your incident.
