Sony lists the standard disc PS5 at $649.99, the Digital Edition at $599.99, and PS5 Pro at $899.99. The Pro also has 2TB of built-in storage, but it has no disc drive included.
PS5 Pro vs. standard PS5: the key differences
These are Sony’s U.S. recommended retail prices, effective April 2, 2026—not a guarantee of current retailer prices. Discounts, bundles, taxes, and stock vary. Sony advises buyers in markets outside the U.S., U.K., Europe, and Japan to check local retailers or PlayStation Direct. Sony’s price announcement has the regional details.

The $250 gap is between PS5 Pro and the disc-equipped standard PS5. Compared with the Digital Edition, the gap is $300. Sony’s U.S. PS5 buying page lists the standard-console storage and drive configurations; its PS5 Pro page lists Pro features and compatibility.
What the Pro upgrade means in actual games
More graphics headroom, not a universal 4K/120fps promise
Sony’s September 10, 2024 announcement said PS5 Pro has 67% more GPU compute units than the then-current PS5, memory 28% faster, and rendering up to 45% faster. These are Sony’s manufacturer-published comparisons, not independent benchmark results. Sony also identified advanced ray tracing and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), its AI-driven upscaling feature. Sony’s launch announcement provides the original claims.

Sony says supported games can offer 60fps or up to 120fps with 4K output, ray tracing, and PSSR. Those options depend on the title: Sony explicitly says PS5 Pro-enhanced features vary by game. Do not assume every game runs at 4K and 120fps, or that every PS5 game receives a visual upgrade.
Check your own games before paying more
Sony’s current Pro page lists over 100 enhanced PS5 titles and identifies games supporting Enhanced PSSR; the catalog can change. Check whether the games you play most are included and what kind of enhancement they offer. The Pro’s strongest case is a visible improvement in games you actually play, not the promise of a feature you may never use.

Storage, discs, and your existing library
Built-in storage
The Pro’s 2TB SSD gives you more built-in room for installed games than either listed standard model: 1TB on the disc PS5 and 825GB on the Digital Edition. Advertised capacity is not the same as usable space; some SSD capacity is reserved for system software and other functions.
Disc drive and setup
PS5 Pro is digital-only as sold. Sony lists a compatible removable Disc Drive, but it is sold separately and must be paired with the console over an internet connection during setup. Add the drive’s separate cost and setup requirement if you own physical PS5 or PS4 games, Blu-ray movies, or DVDs. Sony’s Disc Drive setup information explains the pairing process.

If you want to play discs without adding another purchase, the standard disc PS5 includes its drive. The Digital Edition has no built-in drive, so it suits buyers committed to digital purchases unless they later add a compatible drive.
PS4 and PS5 game compatibility
Sony says PS5 Pro plays all PS5 games and over 8,500 PS4 games, with a small number of PS4 titles incompatible. Game Boost may stabilize or improve performance in supported PS4 and PS5 games, but Sony does not promise an improvement for every title. Your existing library can still be a reason to consider Pro, but verify a specific game if compatibility is essential.

Who should buy PS5 Pro?
- You have a 4K display and play Pro-enhanced games. That combination gives the graphics and performance features a better chance of mattering to you.
- You value image quality or frame-rate options enough to pay for them. The benefits are title-specific, so check Sony’s current enhanced-games list against your own library.
- You want 2TB of built-in storage. This is the largest listed built-in SSD capacity of the compared consoles.
- You have compatible Wi-Fi 7 equipment and care about the feature. A compatible router is required to access Wi-Fi 7 benefits; actual online performance still depends on network and game conditions.
- You already own a PS5 and want a targeted upgrade. The Pro can make sense if the games you return to support its enhancements and you consider those improvements worth the premium.
Who should choose the standard PS5?
- You want the lower upfront cost. At the cited U.S. recommended prices, the disc PS5 is $250 less than Pro; the Digital Edition is $300 less.
- You want physical-disc playback included. Choose the disc model rather than paying separately for a drive with Pro.
- Your games do not benefit from Pro-specific enhancements, or you do not care about them. The standard PS5 remains the way to play PS5 games without paying for game-specific upgrades.
- You would rather put the price difference toward games or accessories. That may deliver more value than extra graphics features you will rarely notice or use.
The standard PS5 is not obsolete: Sony describes Pro features as enhancements over PS5 in select games, and PS5 games remain playable on Pro. The decision is whether the extra $250 buys improvements and storage you will use.

- Set your real price comparison. Compare the current local price of the Pro with the disc PS5 or Digital Edition you would otherwise buy, including taxes, discounts, and any bundle differences.
- Check your most-played games. Look at Sony’s current PS5 Pro page for enhanced titles and Enhanced PSSR support. Confirm the specific games that matter to you rather than relying on a headline feature.
- Account for your screen and network. A compatible 4K display is relevant to the Pro’s 4K feature claims; Wi-Fi 7 benefits require a compatible router.
- Include physical media in the calculation. If you use discs, compare the standard disc PS5 with Pro plus the separately sold compatible drive, including the internet pairing step.
- Weigh capacity against price. Choose whether the Pro’s 2TB built-in SSD matters enough to you to justify the premium over 1TB or 825GB, remembering usable space is lower than advertised capacity.
Recommendation: For a buyer without a specific reason to want the Pro’s game-dependent upgrades, the standard disc PS5 is the safer value. Choose Pro when your supported games, display, storage needs, and budget all make the extra cost worthwhile.
