Short answer: A PS5 disc game needs a compatible console with a disc drive and the disc to play; a digital game is downloaded through PlayStation Store and accessed through the purchasing account. Sony also lets you share downloaded games with other users on one PS5 when Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled. Neither format should be treated as an unconditional promise of resale rights or permanent access to online services.
How PS5 disc and digital games work
The main difference is how the game is accessed. A disc-based copy requires a compatible PS5 with a disc drive installed. Insert the disc and the console begins installing game data; the disc remains part of the play setup. Sony’s PS5 Quick Start Guide for the CFI-71XX family states that disc-based games can be played if a disc drive is installed. Check your specific console model and drive configuration before choosing a disc edition.

A digital game is purchased and downloaded from PlayStation Store. Sony says an internet connection and account sign-in are needed to purchase and download games. Once downloaded and ready, access is through the purchasing account, subject to Sony’s sharing settings and the game’s own requirements.
PS5 disc vs. digital: practical differences

Can I share my digital PS5 games?
Yes, within Sony’s Console Sharing and Offline Play limits. On the enabled PS5, any user can play the owner’s purchased and downloaded games, including when that console is offline. Sony says the feature can be enabled on one PS5 at a time. It is automatically allowed on the first PS5 used to sign in; enabling it on another PS5 requires disabling it on the previous one.

To change the setting, use the PS5 path Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play. Sony’s Console Sharing and Offline Play support page also describes remote deactivation through account management; remote deactivation of all devices is limited to once every six months.
Does PlayStation Plus sharing depend on game format?
No. Selected PlayStation Plus benefits can be shared with other users on a primary PS4 and one PS5 with the relevant setting enabled. Sony does not say that every Plus benefit is shared. PlayStation Plus support also notes that most PS4 and PS5 online multiplayer requires Plus, with some game-specific exceptions. This subscription sharing is separate from whether a game was bought on disc or digitally.

Can a friend play without owning the game?
Share Play is distinct from lending or transferring a copy. Sony says an invited online friend can watch or participate through Share Play without owning the game. That does not change who purchased the game or establish resale or transfer rights.
Can I resell a physical PS5 game?
Do not treat “physical” as an automatic guarantee of resale rights. Sony’s Software Usage Terms, October 2020 version, issued for Europe, say users must not resell disc-based or digital software unless Sony expressly authorizes it and, where another company publishes the software, that publisher additionally authorizes it.

That dated, region-specific document does not establish current law or contract terms everywhere. For a decision in a particular country, check the current local terms and applicable law rather than assuming the same rule applies worldwide.
Does a disc guarantee permanent access?
No. A disc provides the physical media and is needed for the disc-based play setup, but it does not guarantee that every online feature or service will remain available. Sony’s guide says specific online game features may be withdrawn on reasonable notice and service availability is not guaranteed. Likewise, Sony’s documented offline-sharing feature for downloaded games is not a promise that all game modes work without a connection.

Which format should you choose?
Choose disc when
- Your PS5 has a compatible disc drive.
- You prefer using physical media and are comfortable keeping the disc available when you play.
- You want your choice to center on a physical copy, while checking applicable local terms before relying on resale.
Choose digital when
- You want to buy and download through PlayStation Store using your account.
- You value the option for other users of one enabled PS5 to access your purchased and downloaded games.
- You are comfortable with account-based access and the network and storage circumstances involved in downloading.
There is no source-established universal convenience winner: the practical choice turns on your console’s drive, how you prefer to access games, account setup, and your download circumstances.
