Updating Dell System Update (DSU) itself is different from using DSU to update a server’s firmware, drivers, or applications. First confirm your Dell server and Linux release are supported, then follow Dell’s current package instructions to install or upgrade DSU. Once installed, inspect the proposed server updates with dsu --preview before deciding whether to apply them.
Know which update you mean
DSU is Dell’s deployment tool for identifying, selecting, and applying Dell application, firmware, and driver updates. It can use online or offline sources. Updating the DSU utility means installing a newer DSU package; using DSU to update a server means applying component updates through the utility. Dell documents both the installation workflow and component-update operations, but the available documentation does not establish one universal package-manager upgrade command for every Linux distribution. See Dell’s DSU introduction and installation instructions.
Check compatibility and prerequisites first
- Identify the exact Dell server model or PowerEdge generation and Linux distribution and release. Confirm both in Dell’s current DSU support documentation before installing; older guides have differing support lists.
- Decide whether DSU will run locally or be used for remote management. Remote Linux access requires SSH to be enabled; that is not a prerequisite for a local operation. Remote iDRAC workflows have separate requirements.
- Run installation and update operations with root or administrator privileges, and ensure the required Linux libraries are present.
- If the host is in FIPS mode, note that Dell’s DSU 2.1.2.0 guide says FIPS mode is not yet supported.
The 2.1.2.0 guide is the most current one identified here, but that does not establish that it remains the latest release. Check Dell’s DSU Linux repository and current guide for the target host rather than assuming an older package or support matrix is current.
Choose an installation source
| Workflow | When it fits | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Online | The Linux host can access Dell’s supported repository. | Follow the current repository and package instructions for the supported distribution, including package-signing requirements. |
| Offline | The host is disconnected or updates must be staged through a controlled local source. | Use Dell’s supported offline package and repository workflow, and confirm the catalog and package are appropriate for the target server. |
Dell documents both online and offline DSU installation on Linux, including RHEL, SLES, and Ubuntu. The exact commands depend on distribution and source. Do not reuse an old bootstrap URL or package-manager command without verifying it against Dell’s current instructions.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Preview server updates before applying them
After DSU is installed, distinguish an inventory check from the update action. Dell documents dsu --preview to list applicable updates, allowing you to inspect the proposed components before making changes. Preview is not a guarantee that an update will succeed; execution and component-specific requirements still need to be checked.
- Run an inventory or compliance check using the options documented for your DSU version and source to understand the server’s current state.
- Run
dsu --previewand review the listed updates for the target host. - Check that the proposed components are intended for this server and operating environment. Confirm any component-specific instructions in Dell’s documentation.
- Confirm that the configured source, catalog, and any required credentials are correct. Online, offline, and remote workflows may need additional source or installer options.
See Dell’s preview guidance for the documented operation.

- Apply the reviewed update set using the documented options for your source and host.
- Review DSU’s output for errors or unmet requirements.
- Run inventory or compliance checks again and confirm the resulting state against the updates you intended to install.
- For firmware or other components with operational requirements, follow that component’s Dell documentation. Do not assume that every update requires—or avoids—a reboot or downtime.
Safety checks to keep in mind
- Do not bypass signature verification as a routine workaround. The guide exposes an ignore-signature option, but that is not a general recommendation for safe updates.
- Do not assume that preview promises successful installation, rollback, automatic reboot behavior, or zero downtime; those outcomes are not established as universal DSU behavior.
- Keep local Linux use separate from remote access setup: SSH is relevant to remote Linux administration, not required simply to run DSU on the host.
