Confirm the status updates before proceeding. This is a precaution, not a claim that every software update erases watch data; Samsung’s update instructions say the watch reboots during installation but do not say that a routine update universally resets it.
Back up the watch before updating
- Keep the watch paired to its phone. Open Galaxy Wearable on that phone.
- Tap Watch settings > Accounts and backup.
- Check Last backed up. Open Smart Switch and allow the requested permissions, then follow the prompts to run the backup.
- If Save backup to Samsung Cloud appears, enable it if you want that option. It is not shown as a universal setting across all models and regions.
- Wait for the operation to finish, then check Last backed up again and confirm it reflects the new backup. A cloud-saving toggle alone does not confirm a completed, current backup.
Samsung’s current US instructions describe this Smart Switch flow and optional Samsung Cloud saving. Menu labels and available options can vary by watch model, region, and software version; use the labels shown in your Galaxy Wearable app. See Samsung’s Galaxy Watch backup instructions and its general smartwatch data-loss guide.
When an automatic backup may run
In Samsung’s US-described workflow, an automatic backup is conditional: more than 24 hours must have passed since the previous backup, the phone must be connected to Wi-Fi and have more than 30% battery, the watch must have more than 15% battery, and both screens must be off. Do not rely on a scheduled backup if you need a fresh copy before an update; run Smart Switch manually and verify the resulting status.
What the backup includes—and what it may not
Samsung says supported backup items can include preinstalled app data and settings, downloaded apps or their installed-app list, watch-face settings, app and widget settings and home-screen layouts, plus system settings such as display, input, sound, and vibration. The precise items available depend on the model and software.

- Music stored on the watch is not backed up. Samsung says music saved on the phone can instead be transferred to the watch manually.
- Very large files may be excluded. Samsung cautions that “Some exceptionally large files may not be backed up.”
- Moving between watch platforms can lose compatibility. Samsung warns that some data may not transfer from a Tizen watch to a Wear OS watch, such as Galaxy Watch6.
For these scope limits, consult Samsung’s repair backup guide and general smartwatch backup guide. If particular files matter, do not assume they are included simply because the rest of the backup completed.
Install the watch update
- In Galaxy Wearable, open Watch settings > Watch software update > Download and install. Samsung says Galaxy Watch3 and newer can use this route, although wording may differ on some models.
- On supported Wear OS watches, you can also check the update on the watch under Settings > Software update.
- Follow the on-screen prompts and allow the watch to reboot as part of installation.
Use Samsung’s software and app update instructions for model-specific details. The reboot is part of the installation process; it does not by itself mean the watch was reset.

Restore a backup during setup
- Start connecting the watch to its phone through Galaxy Wearable.
- When Smart Switch offers available backups, select the backup you want to restore.
- Continue through the prompts and wait for the transfer to finish.
- Review the final recovered-items confirmation so you know what was restored.
Samsung’s general guide also describes a Galaxy Wearable > Watch settings > Account and backup > Restore or Restore data route on applicable software versions. The singular or plural wording and the point in setup when restore appears can vary; follow the route presented for your watch rather than expecting identical labels everywhere. Model and region differences to check
Samsung’s US support pages describe Wear OS watch backups as phone-based: use the paired phone rather than expecting to make the backup directly on the watch. Some other configurations may offer on-watch Samsung-account backup and restore when the watch was not set up with a phone. Samsung’s Japan support page, updated August 3, 2026, describes generation-specific differences: Watch9 and Watch Ultra2 require manual backup and restore there, while Watch4 through Watch8 and Watch Ultra have different instructions. Those are Japan-market directions, not a universal rule for every country or app version. Check the instructions and options shown for your specific model and region. Also avoid removing Smart Switch between backup and restore if your model’s instructions say the backup depends on it. Samsung’s Japan guidance warns that uninstalling Smart Switch can delete the backup where that behavior applies.

A routine software update should not be confused with re-pairing or resetting. Samsung’s UK guidance says reconnecting a watch to a new phone can reset data depending on model and software, so make a verified backup before changing phones or pairing again. See Samsung’s instructions for reconnecting a Galaxy Watch to a new phone. If setup offers no backup, check that you are using the phone and Samsung account associated with the backup, that Smart Switch remains available, and that the backup is listed in the restore flow; the exact recovery options remain model- and software-dependent.
