The current version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered, released September 29, 2026. It replaces the 2022 “next-gen update” as the current version to check when you are troubleshooting saves, mods, or performance. Existing saves are compatible, but the revamped skill system resets your skill points. Cross-progression can move saves between supported versions, and the in-game mod menu now uses mod.io.
What is the current Witcher 3 update?
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered launched September 29, 2026 for PC (Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store, and Battle.net), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. CD PROJEKT RED describes it as a remaster with updated visuals, gameplay and interface changes, and platform-specific features. Its listed owners also receive Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine as part of the Remastered release. See the launch announcement and official feature list.
The earlier “next-gen update” usually means version 4.0, released in December 2022 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. It introduced visual and performance enhancements, platform-specific graphics settings, quality-of-life changes, community mods, and cloud cross-progression; later updates extended features to more platforms. That history still matters for older guides, but use Remastered instructions and requirements for the current release. Do I need to buy The Witcher 3 again?
No, if you already own a previous physical or digital version in the same platform ecosystem. CD PROJEKT RED says eligible owners can upgrade to Remastered for free. The entitlement is not a license to move a purchase between unrelated platforms: for example, owning a copy on one console or PC store does not establish upgrade eligibility on another. Check the account and store where you own the game before downloading or purchasing anything. The publisher’s Remastered feature list describes the upgrade policy.

Will my old save work, and why did my skills reset?
CD PROJEKT RED’s Remastered FAQ says existing Witcher 3 saves are compatible. The main exception to expect in your character setup is the skill overhaul: the redesigned skill tree adds prerequisites and three ranks for each skill, and your skill points are reset so you can allocate them under the new system. The publisher’s update notes state: “As a result of these changes, your skill points have been reset.” Earned achievements for the base game and expansions carry over. Compatibility and transfer are different questions: a save can be compatible with the new version but still need to be uploaded and retrieved through Cross Progression if you are moving between platform generations or supported platforms.
How do I transfer a save with Cross Progression?
Connect the same CD PROJEKT RED account on each game version involved. The general support guide says the latest save of every save type is uploaded automatically once Cross Progression is enabled. For the specifically documented PS4-to-PS5 transfer, use this sequence:

- On PS4, update the old game version. Open My Rewards and connect the game to your CD PROJEKT RED account.
- Create a new save on PS4. Check that the cloud icon appears on the save to confirm it has been uploaded.
- Open the new version on PS5. Connect it to the same CD PROJEKT RED account.
- Load the uploaded save. Choose the cloud save in the new version.
These are the publisher’s documented PS4-to-PS5 save-transfer steps. For other supported platform combinations, consult the general Cross Progression guide; the exact account and store setup can differ by platform.
Can I use mods on console?
Remastered adds an in-game Mods menu powered by mod.io. CD PROJEKT RED’s current guide lists PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2 as supported platforms. Availability is not identical for every mod: check that mod’s Available on consoles tag before subscribing if you intend to use it on a console.
- Open the in-game Mods menu.
- Sign in with your CD PROJEKT RED account and connect it to mod.io.
- Subscribe to the mod you want.
- Restart the game, then open Installed to confirm that the mod appears enabled.
The official cross-platform mod guide covers account linking, installation, and platform support. PC mod authors also have an updated REDkit, but that is a creation tool rather than the in-game subscription process.

Will a modded save transfer between platforms?
It can, provided both platforms have the same set of mods enabled. CD PROJEKT RED warns that a missing or incompatible mod can prevent the save from loading correctly. A save made with mods has a mod.io cog icon, which helps distinguish it from an unmodded save. Console achievements are disabled on modded saves. Before moving a modded save, compare the enabled mods on both ends and confirm each is available and compatible on the destination platform; details are in the mod support guide.
Does Remastered improve performance?
It changes the rendering technology and graphics options, but the feature list alone does not establish how fast the game will run on a particular PC or display. CD PROJEKT RED says the hardware requirements changed, so check the current requirements for your platform rather than relying on specifications from version 4.x. The publisher lists these PC graphics features:
- Native DirectX 12 with multithreading and optional Path Tracing.
- NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 with Ray Reconstruction.
- AMD FSR 4 on Radeon RX 7000 Series and newer GPUs; FSR 2 is used on unsupported GPUs.
- Intel XeSS 2.0.
- Ray-Traced HairWorks, alongside broader rendering updates such as improved shading, textures and models, foliage lighting, tone mapping, GTAO, local shadows, screen-space reflections and image-based lighting.
These are supported features, not a promise of a particular frame rate or a measured comparison with the earlier release. Which options are usable depends on your hardware and platform. Consult the official feature list for the publisher’s current descriptions.

What frame rates are listed for PS5 Pro?
CD PROJEKT RED gives targets for the PS5 Pro modes below. These are official mode targets, not guaranteed results for every scene, display, or setup.

The Remastered feature list also names PS5 Pro support for PSSR, VRR, and uncapped frame rates. A display needs to support VRR to make use of the stated VRR-dependent upper target.
What is different on Nintendo Switch 2?
The Switch 2 release adds platform-specific controls and display features: motion and gyroscope controls, mouse-sensor controls, touch input in menus and other named modes, HD rumble, handheld VRR, and HDR. These describe supported capabilities; they do not establish a measured frame rate. See the publisher’s Remastered feature list for the platform details.

What should I try if an update problem persists?
First check that the game is updated to the latest patch available for your platform. As of October 7, 2026, the latest official notes found for PC are Hotfix 5.00c, released October 1. It addressed saving and loading when the Documents folder path contained special characters, quieter voiceover audio after using pause-menu tabs, and a HairWorks change that caused performance and visual problems for some players. If your issue matches one of those symptoms, install the relevant update and try again before changing unrelated settings.
Patch 5.00b also addressed unavailable DLSS in the Xbox Play Anywhere PC version and lighting, among other adjustments. Check the notes for the update applicable to your build: Hotfix 5.00c and Patch 5.00b. A PC hotfix note does not necessarily describe the current patch status on consoles.
