A gaming PC’s fans often get louder when a demanding game raises CPU or GPU load and temperature; noise alone does not prove a fault. Start by checking what is using system resources, whether vents are clear, and whether the fans are working normally. If performance drops, the system shuts down, or a fan is damaged, investigate further or contact the device maker.

Why a gaming PC gets hot or loud during games

Games can push the processor and graphics card harder than everyday tasks. As their temperatures rise, fans may speed up to move more air through the cooling system. ASUS describes this behavior in its overheating and fan troubleshooting guidance.

There is no universal “normal” CPU or GPU temperature that diagnoses every gaming PC. Intel explains that temperature depends on the processor, workload, and system design in its gaming-temperature guidance. Compare readings with the limits for the exact CPU or GPU model, and consider the chassis, cooling, room conditions, and fan settings—not a generic number.

Noise or heat is more concerning when it comes with game stutter, persistent performance loss, shutdowns, a fan that does not operate when expected, or abnormal mechanical noise. Intel identifies shutdowns, lower-than-expected CPU frequency, throttling, general slowness, and excessive fan noise among possible overheating symptoms in its boxed-processor overheating guide.

Check workload before changing hardware

  1. Open Task Manager: Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, then inspect the Processes and Performance views while the problem is occurring. Look for an application using more CPU or GPU resources than expected. ASUS recommends checking resource use and closing an abnormal process when appropriate.
  2. Close only what you recognize: If a nonessential application is clearly consuming resources, close it and see whether load and fan noise fall. Do not terminate unfamiliar Windows processes simply because their names are unclear.
  3. Check whether the change helps: If the game still causes the same heat or noise with no unexpected process, move on to airflow and fan checks.

Restore clear airflow

Laptop

  • Place the laptop on a firm, flat surface. A bed, pillow, sofa, or other soft surface can block openings.
  • Keep intake and exhaust openings clear. Vent positions differ by model, so check the device manual or manufacturer support page.
  • Use the ambient operating range stated in the manual. ASUS gives 5°C–35°C (41°F–95°F) for products covered by its support guidance; this is not a universal range for every laptop.

Desktop

  • Move the case out of an enclosed space and leave room around its vents.
  • Check that cables or components are not blocking air paths, and confirm that intake and exhaust fans run in a sensible direction.
  • If the room or case may be trapping heat, a side-panel temperature change can be a diagnostic clue, as ASUS suggests in its graphics-card cooling troubleshooting guidance. Do not treat that observation alone as proof of the cause or a permanent fix.

Inspect and clean dust safely

Dust, hair, and debris can obstruct vents or fans and contribute to cooling and noise problems. Before cleaning, shut down the computer and unplug it. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact device.

  • For external vent cleaning, ASUS recommends a commercially available compressed-air can held at a distance from the vent and not inverted. Its cleaning advice warns that excessive air pressure can damage fan blades, so do not use a powerful air compressor.
  • Do not force air through a fan that is free to spin, or disassemble a laptop unless the manufacturer’s service instructions call for it.
  • For excessive internal dust buildup, ASUS recommends contacting its service center rather than attempting risky internal cleaning.

Check fan operation and device settings

Look for a fan that is physically blocked, visibly damaged, or not operating. A graphics-card fan may stop at low temperatures because of a zero-RPM mode, so a stationary fan is not automatically faulty. If it should be running but is not, ASUS advises a service inspection in its graphics-card fan troubleshooting guidance.

ARCTIC P12 Pro PST - Powerful Premium Fan, 120 mm PWM Fan, 600-3000 RPM
  • HIGH STATIC PRESSURE: Efficient even with resistance – the generated airflow easily penetrates dense radiators, narrow perforated panels and mesh structures and ensures reliable cooling
  • PWM CONTROL WITH WIDE SPEED RANGE: The speed can be progressively adjusted up to 3000 rpm via the 4-pin PWM connection – the fan stops completely at less than 5% PWM
  • PRECISE MANUFACTURING FOR MAXIMUM SMOOTH RUNNING: Minimal gaps, automatic balancing and high-precision measurement noticeably reduce vibrations – for quiet, efficient and long-lasting performance
  • SMOOTH-RUNNING FLUID DYNAMIC BEARING (FDB): The self-lubricating bearing minimizes noise during operation – ideal for quiet, efficient cooling and a long, reliable service life
  • NEW FAN BLADE DESIGN FOR MORE PERFORMANCE: The redesigned rotor blades offer an optimal balance of performance and low noise – especially efficient at low speeds

Fan modes and control software vary by brand and model. Some ASUS devices offer settings through MyASUS or Armoury Crate; use the instructions for your exact model rather than applying another manufacturer’s settings. ASUS also recommends checking for BIOS, Windows, and driver updates as a stability and performance step in its troubleshooting guidance. An update is not a guaranteed cooling fix, and firmware should not be updated casually while a system is unstable.

For a self-built desktop: verify the cooler and case setup

Before replacing parts, review whether a recent hardware change preceded the problem. Intel’s boxed-processor overheating instructions apply to self-built systems using Intel boxed processors; they are not universal instructions for every prebuilt PC.

CORSAIR RS120 ARGB 120mm PWM Fans – Daisy-Chain Connection – Low-Noise – Magnetic Dome Bearing – Triple Pack – Black
  • Streamlined Fan Connections: Daisy-chain multiple fans together and control them all through just one 4-pin PWM connector and one +5V ARGB connector.
  • Lighting Made Easy: Eight LEDs per fan shine bright with customisable lighting through your motherboard’s built-in ARGB control (requires compatible motherboard).
  • Precise PWM Speeds: Set your fan speeds up to 2,100 RPM while providing up to 72.8 CFM airflow to your system.
  • CORSAIR AirGuide Technology: Anti-vortex vanes direct airflow at your hottest components for concentrated cooling, pushing air in the direction you need when mounted to a radiator or heatsink.
  • High Static Pressure: RS fans work well as radiator fans with a static pressure of 2.8mm-H2O to push through obstructions.
  • Confirm the CPU cooler supports the processor and socket, and fits the case.
  • Check that the cooler is mounted correctly, any protective film was removed, fasteners are secured evenly, and thermal-interface material is appropriate.
  • Verify that the cooler fan, or liquid-cooling pump and radiator leads, are connected to the correct headers.
  • Check that case fan inlets, vents, cables, intake, and exhaust are unobstructed, with airflow moving in the intended direction.

If the system is OEM-built, use the manufacturer’s service guidance rather than assuming a self-build procedure applies. When considering a replacement cooler, first establish that the cooler is the problem and check socket, case dimensions, power, and fan-header compatibility.

Know what throttling means and when to get help

Thermal throttling is a protective response, not a cooling setting to disable. Intel states: “Throttling is a mechanism in Intel® Processors to reduce the clock speed when the temperature in the system reaches above TJ Max (or Tcase).” If a processor is throttling, it may run more slowly to protect itself.

Contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider if safe workload and airflow checks do not resolve the problem, if performance remains impaired or the system shuts down, or if a fan is damaged, fails to run when needed, or makes abnormal mechanical noise. Laptop and OEM repairs should follow the maker’s model-specific service procedures.
