To configure them safely, check the mod’s requirements and instructions against your game version and storefront, add a few at a time, and verify the game before installing more. REDkit is for creating mods; you do not need it to play them.
Before installing: check compatibility and protect your setup
Start with the version and storefront of the game you actually use. A mod’s description and installation notes should say what it requires and how its files should be installed. The official guide points users to those mod-specific instructions, rather than prescribing one folder or method for every download. See CD PROJEKT RED’s installation guide.
- Read the mod’s requirements, supported game version, and any notes about using it with other mods.
- Save a backup of important save files and keep a clean way to repair or restore the game if an installation causes trouble. Mods are community-made; backups reduce risk but cannot guarantee that a save or installation will remain unaffected.
- Install a small number of mods at a time, then launch the game and check that they work before adding more. This makes it easier to identify which change caused a problem.
CD PROJEKT RED states: “The content of mods for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is created by the community and not reviewed by CD PROJEKT RED.” The official guide explains installation routes; it does not certify a mod as safe, compatible, or free of malicious files.
Choose an installation method

The official descriptions do not establish that every mod is available through all three routes or that catalogs and compatibility are identical across storefronts.

Install mods through the in-game mod.io menu
- Launch The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and choose Mods from the main menu.
- Log in with your CD PROJEKT RED account and connect it to mod.io when prompted.
- Browse the available mods and select Subscribe on the one you want.
- Wait for its download to finish, then restart the game.
- Open the installed-mod list and confirm that the mod is checked or otherwise enabled.
These are the steps in CD PROJEKT RED’s official guide. Subscription is not the final check: confirm the mod’s enabled state after restarting.
Install a mod from Steam Workshop
- Find the desired mod in the Steam Workshop for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
- Select Subscribe.
- After Steam has handled the subscription, launch the game and check that the mod is available and working as expected.
The official guide describes this subscription-and-launch flow. Workshop availability does not establish that a mod supports every game version or works alongside every other mod, so check its own notes.

Install a Nexus Mods download manually
- Browse the The Witcher 3 category on Nexus Mods and choose a mod.
- Read its installation instructions, requirements, and compatibility notes before downloading.
- Download the package and place its files in the appropriate game folder exactly as the mod’s instructions specify.
- Launch the game and test the change before adding more mods.
Do not assume that all downloads go into the same folder: CD PROJEKT RED directs users to follow the instructions for the particular mod. The publisher’s guide explains the route, not a universal directory layout.
Configure several mods and resolve conflicts
There is no universal load order or conflict-resolution recipe in the official instructions. The right configuration depends on the mods you choose and their requirements. A community Witcher 3 PC installation guide discusses mod managers such as Vortex, manual installation, load-order management, and Script Merger for script conflicts. Treat these as conditional tools, not mandatory setup steps for every player or mod.

- Follow each mod author’s directions about installation order, dependencies, and compatibility with other mods.
- Use a manager or a conflict tool only when it fits the mods you are installing, and follow the current documentation for that tool.
- If a conflict tool generates a merge, review its instructions. The community guide warns that unresolved conflicts may prevent startup and that changing or removing mods can make generated merges stale; exact behavior depends on the setup.
- If the game stops launching after a change, remove or disable the most recently added mod where possible, consult its instructions and any tool documentation, and retest before changing several other files at once.
Is REDkit required to play mods?
No. CD PROJEKT RED says the base PC game is enough to play user-created mods; REDkit is the official toolkit for creating and expanding mods. The publisher says REDkit is available to owners of the PC game on Steam, Epic Games Store, or GOG, and an installed PC copy of the game is required to use the toolkit. Those availability details concern the creation tool and do not establish that every mod works identically across storefront builds. See the official REDkit modding information.
