What is different between the two PS5 configurations?

These capacities are Sony’s stated SSD specifications, not the amount of free space guaranteed to be available for games after system software and other content. The comparison and specifications are from Sony’s UK product pages and manual, so check the specifications for the model and market you are buying in. Sony’s PS5 console comparison and the CFI-21XX instruction manual list the capacities.
Choose based on how you get games
Pick the disc console if you own or want physical games
The built-in drive is the straightforward choice if you already own PS4 or PS5 games on disc, expect to buy used or discounted discs, or want the flexibility to choose between disc and digital purchases. A Digital Edition needs a compatible add-on drive for physical games, and not every Digital Edition model supports one.
Pick the Digital Edition if your library is digital
If your games are already digital and you are comfortable purchasing through PlayStation Store, the Digital Edition covers that use without a built-in drive. It also works for digital downloads whether or not you later add a compatible drive, but do not assume that an add-on can be fitted to every generation.

Do you need the drive for movies?
A disc-capable PS5 supports Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD playback, so choose a model with disc capability if you want the console to play those formats. Sony specifically says the original CFI-1000 Digital Edition does not support disc-based games or media. If considering a newer Digital Edition with an add-on drive, confirm compatibility for the exact console model before relying on it for movies. See PlayStation’s disc and USB playback guidance.
Can you add a disc drive to a Digital Edition later?
Sometimes. Sony identifies its CFI-ZDD1-series add-on drive for the CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 Digital Edition model groups and PS5 Pro. The original CFI-1000 Digital Edition is excluded from disc use in Sony’s support guidance. Check the console’s model number against Sony’s compatibility information rather than relying on the name “Digital Edition” alone.

- Find the console’s model number on its label or packaging.
- Compare that number with Sony’s Disc Drive compatibility information before buying the accessory.
- During setup, connect the console to the internet: Sony requires an internet connection to pair the add-on drive with the console.
How should storage affect your choice?
Sony’s current UK comparison lists a 1 TB disc console and an 825 GB Digital Edition. That is a difference in stated SSD capacity, not a guarantee of how much space will be free for installations. If storage is a deciding factor, compare the specific model’s listed capacity and account for the space you expect system software and installed games to use; do not treat the headline capacity as usable free space.

There is no single price difference that applies across markets, bundles, or sale periods. Compare the prices available in your region at the time you buy. If you are considering a Digital Edition plus an add-on drive, include the compatible drive’s cost and weigh that against how often you expect to use physical games or discs. A disc console makes more sense when disc use is valuable to you; paying for disc capability is less useful if you expect to stay entirely digital.
