Chat retention is controlled separately through Gemini Apps Activity settings. Google’s current guidance says chats made with Keep Activity off—or in a temporary chat—are still retained for 72 hours.
Does changing or canceling a plan delete your Gemini chats?
Google describes plan access and saved activity as separate matters. When an AI Pro plan ends, Pro-specific Gemini capabilities end, including starting new chats with Pro, continuing chats created with Pro, and using Pro-only features. The cancellation guidance does not say that ending a plan deletes your saved Gemini Apps Activity. Google One’s plan and cancellation guidance explains what benefits end; Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub explains activity retention.
Other bundled benefits may also end, such as expanded Google One storage and Gemini features in Gmail, Docs and other Google products. Check the current details for your plan before canceling because the bundle can change.
What changes when free access changes?
A paid plan can provide access to plan-only models or features and higher usage limits. Google’s Gemini Apps limits page currently lists standard limits for users without an AI plan, twice the standard limits for AI Plus, and four times the standard limits for AI Pro. These are relative tiers, not guaranteed prompt counts; Google warns that limits may change. Subscribers who reach a limit may be able to continue chats with Flash-Lite. Ending paid access can mean losing the ability to continue an existing chat that was created with Pro, as well as losing access to Pro-only features. That is an access change, not a statement that the activity record has been erased.
How Gemini saves chats: Keep Activity and auto-delete
Keep Activity on
With Keep Activity on, chats and shared content—such as files, videos, screens and photos—are saved in Gemini Apps Activity. Google’s Privacy Hub, last updated September 24, 2026, says the default auto-delete period is 18 months. You can change it to 3 months, 36 months or indefinite, and you can delete activity manually. The setting applies to saved Gemini activity, not the subscription plan.

Google says conversations reviewed by human reviewers and related data may remain for up to three years even after activity is deleted. Deletion therefore should not be understood as immediate erasure from every Google system.
Keep Activity off
Turning Keep Activity off does not mean zero retention. Google says future chats are kept with your account for 72 hours so Gemini can respond and to help protect Google, users and the public. Google says those chats are not used to improve its AI models unless you submit feedback. If you submit feedback while Keep Activity is off, Google may collect the feedback, the prior 24 hours of chat context and content included with it.

Temporary chats
Temporary chats are also retained with your account for 72 hours. Google says they are not used to train its AI models. Their temporary status does not mean they disappear immediately when the conversation ends.
How to review or delete Gemini activity
- Check which account you use. The activity controls described here apply to personal accounts. For a work or school account, an administrator may control the settings, and you may not be able to change retention or view the retention period.
- Open Gemini Apps Activity. Review whether Keep Activity is on and check the auto-delete period. Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub provides the relevant privacy and activity information.
- Choose the control that matches your goal. Change the auto-delete period, turn Keep Activity off for future chats, or manually delete activity. Keep in mind that Keep Activity off and temporary chats still involve 72-hour retention.
- Review other Google services separately. Deleting Gemini Apps Activity does not delete data stored by other Google services, and changing Gemini settings does not automatically change Web & App Activity or other Google settings.
- Check plan benefits before canceling. Review your current Google One plan details to identify which Gemini access and other bundled benefits will end.
What data and settings are covered?
Gemini Apps data can include prompts, shared content, generated content and subscription information. The service provider identified by Google is Google Ireland Limited in the EEA and Switzerland, and Google LLC elsewhere. Retention rules for data held by other Google services follow those services’ own policies. Google also notes that some data may be retained longer for legitimate business or legal purposes.

For work or school accounts, do not assume that personal-account controls or retention periods apply: Workspace administrators may set or manage them.
