Within the Watch9 range, 40 mm favors a smaller, lighter profile, while 44 mm gives you a larger display and greater battery capacity. Choose Bluetooth if your compatible phone is usually nearby; choose LTE only if you want supported connectivity away from it and have confirmed carrier coverage and plan requirements.
Which Galaxy Watch should I buy?
Samsung’s current buying guide positions the Galaxy Watch9 as its general-purpose model for everyday wellness, sleep, fitness, running, and gym workouts. The Galaxy Watch Ultra2 is aimed at outdoor activities, endurance training, route guidance, and specialized cycling or diving features. These are manufacturer recommendations, not independent comparative test results.
| Model | Sizes and connectivity | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Watch9 | 40 mm or 44 mm; Bluetooth or LTE | Everyday wellness, sleep, fitness, and general use. Choose between a more compact case and a larger display. |
| Galaxy Watch Ultra2 | 47 mm; LTE | Outdoor use, endurance training, route guidance, and rugged conditions, if you are comfortable with a larger profile. |
| Galaxy Watch8 Classic | See Samsung’s current comparison for market-specific configurations. | Consider it if you prefer a physical rotating bezel. |
| Galaxy Watch8 or Watch7 | See Samsung’s current comparison for market-specific configurations. | Compare the features you actually use before replacing a recent model; a newer generation is not automatically a worthwhile upgrade. |
Samsung lists the Watch8, Watch8 Classic, Watch Ultra, and Watch7 alongside the current models in its US smartwatch comparison. Availability and configurations can differ by market, so confirm the exact model and connectivity option sold where you live. Samsung’s model history guide offers additional background.
40 mm or 44 mm: which Watch9 size is right?
Choose 40 mm for a more compact daily and sleep-wear option
Samsung recommends the Watch9 40 mm for people who want a smaller, lighter fit, including for overnight wear. The case size is 40 mm; Samsung does not provide a universal wrist-measurement cutoff. Wrist shape, comfort, and personal preference vary, so try the case on if possible.

Choose 44 mm for a larger screen and more battery capacity
The Watch9 44 mm has a larger display and greater battery capacity than the 40 mm. Samsung Canada lists its battery capacity as up to 445 mAh. Capacity is not a runtime promise: actual battery life depends on settings, network connection, apps, and activity tracking.
Choose Ultra2 only if you want its larger rugged design
The Ultra2 is 47 mm and prioritizes outdoor visibility, ruggedness, and battery capacity over a compact profile. Samsung Canada lists an 800 mAh battery capacity for this model. As with the Watch9, that capacity does not guarantee a particular time between charges.

Do I need LTE, or is Bluetooth enough?
Bluetooth: for a watch used near your phone
Bluetooth is the straightforward choice if you usually keep a compatible phone with you. For supported calls, messages, notifications, and synchronized information, the watch can use its nearby phone connection.
LTE: for supported connectivity when your phone is away
An LTE watch can use a supported mobile network away from the phone, but buying the LTE model alone does not guarantee standalone calling or texting. You need an LTE-configured watch, an eligible Android phone for initial setup, a qualifying carrier plan, and support in your area. Samsung also cautions that standalone voice and text depend on the carrier, plan, and geographic availability; capabilities can be limited if the paired phone is powered off or has no network connection.

Before paying for LTE, ask your carrier whether it supports the exact watch model in your location, what the watch plan includes, and whether standalone calls and texts work as you expect. Check the terms directly with the carrier; plan names and availability vary.
How long does the battery last?
Samsung Canada states usage estimates of up to 30 hours with Always On Display for the Watch9 and up to 60 hours with Always On Display for the Ultra2. These are manufacturer estimates, not guaranteed results for every owner. Samsung says battery life varies by model, settings, network connection, app use, and activity tracking. Always On Display, LTE, GPS, and continuous workout tracking can increase power use.

Samsung describes the Watch9 and Ultra2 as designed for compatible Android phones. A Galaxy phone provides the most integrated experience, and some Samsung Health or Galaxy ecosystem features require a compatible Galaxy smartphone. Samsung’s US comparison says listed supported functions require Android 10 or later, at least 2 GB of RAM, and a qualifying Samsung Health version; individual features may have stricter requirements.

For example, ECG and irregular rhythm notifications require a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone and the Samsung Health Monitor app. Samsung describes these tools as informational, not substitutes for medical diagnosis or treatment. Its comparison also says body-composition measurements are not intended to diagnose or treat a medical condition. The sleep-apnea feature is described as an over-the-counter software-only feature for specified adults, and is not a substitute for diagnosis or treatment by a qualified clinician. Check Samsung’s feature and compatibility footnotes for current requirements in your market before buying for a particular health feature.
What should I check before choosing?
- Fit: Decide whether a compact case or a larger display is more important; try the watch on if comfort is uncertain.
- Use: Start with Watch9 for general daily use. Consider Ultra2 if you specifically value its rugged, outdoor-oriented design and features.
- Connectivity: Bluetooth suits a phone-nearby routine. LTE makes sense only if its supported away-from-phone features justify a separate carrier plan.
- Phone: Confirm Android compatibility and whether the Galaxy phone or health-feature requirements matter to you.
- Market and price: Check local model availability, configuration, and current price; do not assume a price or LTE option from another country applies to yours.
For context on older US pricing, Samsung’s March 2026 MSRP sheet listed Watch8 prices of $349.99 for 40 mm Bluetooth, $399.99 for 40 mm LTE, $379.99 for 44 mm Bluetooth, and $429.99 for 44 mm LTE. Samsung said those prices were subject to change; the sheet did not list Watch9 pricing. These historical US Watch8 figures are not current Watch9 prices.
