Neither PS5 discs nor digital games are always cheaper over time. A disc can cost less if you find a good used copy and later resell it; a PlayStation Store sale can make a digital copy the lowest-priced option, with no resale needed. Compare the same game edition and content at the time you plan to buy, then factor in how long you are willing to wait and what you can realistically recover from resale.
What determines the long-term cost?
The purchase price is only one part of the calculation. For a disc, estimate net cost as the price you pay minus the resale money you actually expect to receive, after any marketplace fees and shipping. Do not count on a particular resale value without checking current listings and likely selling costs.
For a digital game, the price depends on whether you buy at the PlayStation Store’s standard price or wait for a sale. Downloads cannot be resold, but a sale can make digital the cheapest purchase. Convenience also has value: digital games are ready to download without changing discs, while a disc lets you shop the used market and may have resale value.
- Disc: compare new and pre-owned prices, shipping, and plausible resale proceeds.
- Digital: compare the current Store price with the sale price you are willing to wait for.
- Either format: match the edition and included content, including DLC or a paid PS5 upgrade.
What a 2026 price comparison found—and what it does not prove
In a July 20, 2026 analysis, Ars Technica’s Kyle Orland compared 19 popular PlayStation games using standard and prior-year lowest PlayStation Store prices, current new Amazon discs, GameStop pre-owned prices, and the average of five successful eBay sales including shipping. The analysis included examples of older games with a $59.99 standard Store price and $9.99 used discs, as well as sale downloads that cost half or less than the cheapest used discs. Those are examples from the analysis, not current prices. Check the exact game and edition on the day you buy.
How to compare the same game fairly
- Identify the exact edition and content. Check whether each listing includes the same DLC, bonus content, or PS5 version. If one path requires a paid PS5 upgrade, include its cost. Sony’s PS4 disc-to-PS5 digital upgrade support page explains that upgrade availability and conditions depend on the game.
- Record the current prices. For that edition, note a new disc price, a pre-owned disc price including shipping, and the PlayStation Store price. Mark whether the Store price is a sale.
- Account for your timing. If you can wait for a Store sale, compare that sale price—not just the standard price—with the disc options. If you need the game now, use prices available now.
- Estimate disc resale conservatively. Subtract only proceeds you could plausibly receive after fees and shipping. Treat this as an estimate, not guaranteed savings.
- Include hardware only if you are choosing a console or drive too. A disc-equipped console or compatible drive can affect the total cost of switching formats; do not charge that cost to a game comparison if you already own compatible hardware.
This method gives you a game-by-game answer without assuming a universal break-even number of purchases.

Which buying route fits your habits?

Does digital sharing change the household cost?
It can. Sony’s Console Sharing and Offline Play feature lets anyone using the one enabled PS5 play games and media purchased and downloaded by the account, including while that console is offline. It can be enabled on one PS5 console at a time. For a household sharing a console, this may make one digital purchase serve multiple users on that console. Check your PS5 before buying discs
The format decision depends on the hardware you own. Sony’s US product information lists the standard PS5 with a 1TB SSD and support for PS5 and PS4 games on Blu-ray Disc. The PS5 Digital Edition is listed with 825GB of storage and no disc drive. Sony lists a removable disc drive for specified slim Digital Edition model groups (CFI-2000 and CFI-2100) and PS5 Pro; it requires an internet connection to pair during setup. How Sony’s announced 2028 change affects future discs
On July 1, 2026, Sony announced that physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will end starting January 2028. Sony said games released, or to be released, before January 2028 in disc format are unaffected and remain playable. The announcement concerns new releases after that date; it does not establish how used-disc prices will change or make existing discs unplayable. Read Sony’s announcement on physical disc production.
