Self-checkout cameras do not all do the same job. Depending on the retailer and system, they may monitor whether an item appears to have been scanned, help identify produce, record store activity, or compare a cart with receipt data at the exit. An alert or mismatch is a cue for review—not proof that a shopper intended to steal.

What self-checkout cameras can do

The word “camera” covers several different checkout technologies. A camera may observe activity around a scanner, help select a produce code, record general security footage, or contribute to an automated checkout workflow. Those functions should not be treated as interchangeable, and retailer disclosures do not establish that every camera uses automated theft detection.

System or purpose What it analyzes What may happen
Scan assistance Movement around the scanner or bagging area A possible missed-scan alert may be shown to the shopper or staff for review.
Produce selection Visual characteristics such as color, shape, and size The checkout narrows the produce choices displayed to the shopper.
General CCTV Store activity, including checkout areas Footage may be used for security or operational purposes.
Scan-free checkout Movement around products and images used to determine what was picked up Identified products may be added to a basket at the till.
Exit receipt matching Cart contents compared with transaction or receipt data An associate may receive a comparison to review as the cart exits.

Why a self-checkout camera might flag you

A scan-assistance system can flag an event when it detects a possible difference between movement around the checkout and the scanned transaction—for example, an item that may have remained in a trolley or basket rather than being scanned. The signal identifies something for review; it does not establish why it happened or whether it was intentional.

Woolworths Scan Assist

Woolworths says its Scan Assist monitors item movement and can alert the shopper and nearby staff when an item may have been mis-scanned or left in a trolley or basket. The company says a short, low-resolution clip appears on the checkout screen for review. It also says faces are blurred in those clips and payment PIN pads are obscured. These details apply to Woolworths’ named system, not necessarily to other retailers’ equipment. Woolworths: In-store Technology and your Privacy

Other camera functions are different

Woolworths describes Picklist Assist as using produce color, shape, and size to narrow the options shown when a shopper selects fruit or vegetables. The company says the feature does not collect, capture, or store customer images, although a hand may briefly enter the camera’s view. Its Scan&Go trolley cameras face downward and help check scanned items against trolley contents; Woolworths says faces are blurred if captured. Woolworths: In-store Technology and your Privacy

Tesco separately describes scan-assistance technology that tells a shopper if an item may not have scanned properly. It also describes scan-free checkout in some stores: cameras and measurement technology record movement around products, images are analyzed to determine which products were picked up, and those products are added to the basket at the till. That is a distinct automated checkout model, not a description of every conventional self-checkout. Tesco Privacy and Cookies Policy

How an exit receipt check can work

A manual receipt check and a camera-assisted cart comparison are different processes. In Walmart Global Tech’s account of Sam’s Club exit technology, an arch captures multiple images of a cart as it passes. Computer-vision models interpret features such as an item’s size, shape, color, labels, and logos; algorithms then compare the identified contents with an outstanding receipt. The comparison is sent to an exit associate in real time for review. Walmart Global Tech: Exit Technology

Sam’s Club describes its Exit Arches as confirming items against a receipt and says the arches do not perform facial recognition or capture fingerprints. That statement is specific to the named system; it does not establish that all retailers use camera arches or automatically match every cart to a receipt. Sam’s Club: Exit

A prompt to pause, a staff question, or a mismatch is not by itself evidence of intent. The cited descriptions explain possible scan issues and cart-to-receipt comparisons, but they do not establish why staff asked a particular shopper to stop or show a receipt.

Do self-checkout cameras use facial recognition?

There is no single answer for every retailer or camera system. Woolworths says its Scan Assist does not use facial recognition. Sam’s Club says its Exit Arches do not perform facial recognition or capture fingerprints. Those are specific disclosures about those systems, not a universal statement about retail cameras. Retailers also describe camera uses beyond checkout assistance. Walmart’s notice for retail stores in the United States and Puerto Rico says cameras and automated technologies operate in and outside stores for security and operational purposes and may capture checkout images to help deter theft or improve store design. Lowe’s says checkout cameras may capture customers and purchased products. It also says that in some states, image-matching and analysis technology is used after an incident by Asset Protection and Store Operations teams to aid an investigation. The disclosure is limited to the described practices and locations; it does not show that every checkout camera continuously analyzes every customer. Lowe’s Privacy and Security Statement

How long stores keep checkout camera footage

Retention depends on the retailer, system, and circumstances. The periods below come from separate retailer disclosures and should not be read as an industry standard.

Retailer and system Usual retention stated by retailer Scope and exceptions
Tesco scan-free checkout Images and information derived from them are usually deleted within five days. Tesco’s current privacy policy describes its scan-free checkout system; the period is not a general CCTV rule. Tesco Privacy and Cookies Policy
Woolworths in-store technologies Images or footage are usually kept for up to 60 days. Woolworths says it may retain them longer for legal reasons, investigations, incidents, or team-member training. Woolworths: In-store Technology and your Privacy

What these disclosures do—and do not—establish

  • Camera functions vary: a system may assist with scanning, identify produce, record footage, automate basket creation, or help compare a cart with transaction data.
  • A retailer’s description of a particular system is not proof that another retailer uses the same technology, safeguards, or retention period.
  • The cited retailer materials do not establish a universal legal rule for surveillance, biometric analysis, or whether a customer must participate in a receipt check. Those questions can depend on jurisdiction, membership terms, store policy, and the technology involved.
  • The cited sources provide no validated general accuracy rate for missed-scan alerts or receipt matching. A retailer’s workflow description should not be treated as an independent measure of effectiveness.
