Before you pay, test the exact PS5 and disc you plan to buy. Confirm the console powers on, displays a stable image, connects to PlayStation services, and reads discs if it has a drive. Check the serial number, seller’s return terms, and the game’s compatibility with that console model. A short test lowers risk but cannot guarantee future reliability.
Before you meet the seller
- Check the seller’s ratings, feedback, and return terms. Confirm the listing identifies the exact PS5 model and everything included.
- Ask for an unedited video showing the console powering on, displaying an image, connecting to the internet, operating its buttons and ports, and reading a disc if it has a drive. PlayStation recommends these checks and an in-person inspection because video can miss problems. See its US buying guide.
- Ask the seller to sign out and deactivate the console before handoff. Do not rely on a promise that the console is no longer associated with their account; verify the handoff in person.
Inspect and test the console in person
- Check the serial number. Make sure it is present and legible. Walk away if it has been removed or altered; PlayStation lists that as a US warranty exclusion.
- Look over the casing and seals. Note damage or signs of opening or repair. An intact seal is not proof that the console works properly.
- Power it on. Check for a stable picture and normal operation. Listen for unusual noise and watch for overheating or unexpected shutdowns, but do not treat a brief test as a diagnosis of the console’s internal condition.
- Test controls and connections. Try the controller’s buttons and sticks, USB ports, HDMI output, and Wi-Fi or other network access.
- Check PlayStation service access. Have the seller demonstrate a connection to PlayStation services before payment. A device reported lost or stolen may be permanently suspended; a suspension can prevent accounts from accessing services on that console and block Store content or games and modes that require online access. Some disc games that do not require PlayStation services may still run, according to the US terms of service.
- Have the seller deactivate it. PlayStation’s path for disabling Console Sharing and Offline Play is Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play. Consult Account & Security support if the menu or process differs.
Test the disc drive as described below if the model has one. A successful test of one game does not guarantee that every disc will work or that the drive has no developing fault.

Check the used PS5 game disc
- Under good light, inspect both sides for cracks, deep scratches, labels, or grime. Try the exact disc in the console you intend to use whenever possible.
- If it fails, try another known-good game disc or a supported Blu-ray disc or DVD to help distinguish a disc problem from a drive problem. PlayStation recommends this step in its disc troubleshooting guide. PS5 consoles cannot play burned discs or audio CDs.
- For a dirty disc, PlayStation recommends wiping it with a soft, clean cloth. Cleaning does not establish that deep scratches, cracks, or a faulty drive have been fixed.
- Check the specific game’s listing or support page for its edition, language or region needs, included content, and online or account requirements. These details can vary by title; do not assume one game’s conditions apply to another.
- A disc does not transfer the seller’s account or digital purchases. Do not pay extra for an account or promised access to the seller’s downloads: PlayStation describes Store purchases as personal licenses in its US terms of service.
Make sure the disc and console are compatible
A physical game is useful only if your console can read it. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot use PS4 game discs. For eligible PS4 disc upgrades, PlayStation requires a disc-drive PS5, and the original disc must remain inserted to play the upgraded digital game. Check the exact console model and the particular game’s eligibility on PlayStation Games Support; not every game has the same upgrade terms.
Understand warranty and return risk
Warranty terms depend on country and product. PlayStation’s US buying guide says, “Third-party used PlayStation products are not covered by warranty*.” The asterisk matters: the page distinguishes certified refurbished products, which do include warranty. Do not assume an ordinary secondhand purchase has manufacturer coverage.

For the US and Canada, Sony’s published PS5 limited hardware warranty covers the original purchaser for one year from the original purchase date and requires a dated bill of sale or retailer receipt for service. It does not establish that coverage transfers to a secondhand buyer. Ask for the original receipt, check the PS5 warranty terms, and verify local consumer protections and the seller’s return policy.
Sony’s US physical-media warranty describes 90 days of limited coverage from the original purchase date for the original purchaser. The policy does not settle whether coverage transfers to a used-disc buyer, or what rules apply in other countries.

Use the same checks for each candidate listing so a low price does not obscure missing accessories or unverified function.

No single check proves that a used console or disc will remain reliable. Prefer a seller who permits an in-person test and clearly states what happens if the item does not work as described.
