Choose a paid AI plan by matching it to the job: consumer chat, coding assistance, and developer API use are separate products with separate limits and bills. Start with the features and normal monthly usage you need, then compare the subscription plus any likely credits, overages, or API charges—not the headline price alone.
First separate chat, coding, and API access
A consumer chat subscription pays for access to a provider’s chat product under its plan terms. Coding plans may add editor features, agents, code review, or command-line tools, often with their own usage meters. An API account is for applications and automations that make model or tool calls; its usage is commonly billed separately.
Do not assume that buying a plan called “Pro” includes all three. Anthropic states: “A paid Claude subscription enhances your chat experience but doesn’t include access to the Claude API or Console.” The distinction is documented in the Claude Help Center. OpenAI likewise presents its consumer plans and API pricing as separate offerings. If you need both chat and API calls, budget for both products.
Compare the plans on the same terms
The following prices are official-page snapshots retrieved October 7, 2026. They are examples, not a complete market survey; local currency, taxes, billing term, availability, and later plan changes may affect what you pay. Check the provider’s current checkout and plan documentation before purchasing.

These figures alone do not establish how much work a plan will cover. The sources describe different products and metering systems, so the lowest sticker price is not necessarily the lowest cost for your workload. The retrieved material does not establish a current detailed comparison of Google’s paid Gemini plans and developer API pricing, so this comparison does not assign Gemini prices or features.
Check the coding workflow and its meter
For development, identify the actions you actually use rather than choosing by the word “coding” in a plan description. Check whether the offering supports your required editor or environment, and whether the relevant feature consumes credits, usage allowances, or another billable resource.

GitHub says Copilot chat, agent mode, code review, cloud agent, CLI, and Copilot Apps consume GitHub AI Credits. GitHub’s June 1, 2026 billing update also says code review can consume GitHub Actions minutes in addition to AI Credits. Check the Copilot plan details and current billing terms to understand what happens when included credits or other allowances run out.
Anthropic’s Pro-plan documentation says Claude Pro includes Claude Code access, but that does not make Claude Console API usage part of the subscription. Check the Claude plan information for current terms. In either case, compare the feature you will use, the allowance attached to it, and the consequence of exhausting that allowance.

Estimate API costs separately
If you are building an application, script, or automation, forecast API usage independently of your chat subscription. Start by estimating how many requests you expect, their approximate input and output volume, and whether they invoke tools. Then use the provider’s current rate table for the specific model and features you plan to call.
For OpenAI, the API pricing page says Responses, Chat Completions, Realtime, Batch, and Assistants APIs are not priced separately from model token rates, while some built-in tools have their own charges. That means the API surface alone does not determine the cost: model usage and any separately priced tools matter. Consult OpenAI’s current API pricing when estimating. The retrieved information does not provide enough workload detail to calculate a universal monthly API bill.

Use a workload-first decision process
- Write down your primary job and one secondary job. For example, distinguish daily chat from occasional editor help or application development.
- Set the required features. Identify the models, editor or agent actions, API access, and account type you actually need.
- Start at the lowest plan that covers those needs. Check the normal-month allowance, how it resets, and the result of reaching a limit.
- For coding, account for metered actions. Estimate how often you will use agents, premium-model actions, reviews, or other credit-consuming features, not just basic completions.
- Forecast API usage as its own line item. Estimate input, output, and tool use using current rates; do not treat a chat subscription as an API budget.
- Try the plan through a representative period and inspect actual usage. Upgrade only when a specific limit or missing feature blocks your work.
What to verify before paying
- Current price in your region, including currency, taxes, and monthly versus annual billing.
- Included models, message or session limits, credits, and when any allowance resets.
- Which coding actions consume credits or other usage, and what occurs at the limit.
- Whether overage is available, how it is charged, and whether it can be disabled.
- Whether API access is included or billed in a separate account, plus current model and tool rates.
- Whether an individual plan fits your organization’s admin, policy, or account requirements.
