Inflation is a long-term planning risk, not by itself a reason to overhaul your investments after a market move or a news headline. Start with your goals, time horizon, cash needs, and comfort with risk. Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) and I bonds can link parts of a portfolio to inflation, but each works differently and carries tradeoffs; neither replaces a suitable overall allocation.

Start with your plan, not an inflation headline

Before changing investments, identify when you will need the money and how much must remain accessible. Money intended for a near-term expense has a different job from money invested for a distant goal. Your allocation should fit both your time horizon and risk tolerance, rather than being driven by a recent inflation report or market decline.

  • Goals: Name the expense or objective the portfolio is meant to fund.
  • Time horizon: Consider when you will need to draw on the money; a security that fluctuates in market value may be unsuitable for a near-term need.
  • Liquidity: Keep planned withdrawals and emergencies in mind before committing money to investments that are difficult to sell or redeem.
  • Risk tolerance: Decide what level of price fluctuation you can realistically withstand without abandoning the plan.

Vanguard’s August 19, 2026 guidance suggests keeping 3–6 months of living expenses available for cash reserves. That is Vanguard’s guidance, not a universal requirement; choose a reserve that reflects your own expenses and circumstances. Vanguard’s inflation-hedging guidance also advises discipline through market fluctuations, rather than emotion-led decisions.

The SEC’s Investor.gov guide to asset allocation and diversification explains why an allocation should reflect an investor’s time horizon and risk tolerance. It also cautions that a narrowly focused mutual fund or ETF may not be diversified simply because it is a fund.

What TIPS protect against—and what they do not

TIPS are marketable U.S. Treasury securities whose principal is adjusted with changes in the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U). They are offered in 5-, 10-, and 30-year terms. The coupon rate is fixed, but the dollar amount of each interest payment changes because it is calculated against the adjusted principal. Interest is paid every six months.

At maturity, Treasury pays the greater of the original principal or the inflation-adjusted principal. That maturity protection is not a guarantee that the security’s market price will hold steady before then: if you sell early, you receive the price available in the market at that time, which can be more or less than the amount invested. TIPS can be purchased at Treasury auctions through TreasuryDirect or through banks, brokers, and dealers. See TreasuryDirect’s TIPS page for current terms and details.

Inflation linkage addresses one risk; it does not remove market-price risk or make a TIPS allocation appropriate for every goal. Consider when you may need the funds and whether you can hold the security to maturity before choosing it.

How I bonds differ from TIPS

I bonds are non-marketable U.S. savings bonds. Their inflation component resets every six months based on CPI-U changes, and interest accrues rather than arriving as a semiannual payment; it is received when the bond is redeemed or matures. They are bought electronically through TreasuryDirect. TreasuryDirect states an annual purchase limit of $10,000 per Social Security number. Unlike TIPS, I bonds cannot be sold in a secondary securities market.

Feature TIPS I bonds
Inflation link Principal adjusts using CPI-U. Inflation component resets every six months using CPI-U changes.
Can it be sold in a securities market? Yes. Market price can vary before maturity. No. They are non-marketable savings bonds.
Terms and access 5-, 10-, or 30-year terms; Treasury auctions via TreasuryDirect, or purchase through banks, brokers, and dealers. Purchased electronically through TreasuryDirect; TreasuryDirect states an annual purchase limit of $10,000 per Social Security number.
Interest cash flow Fixed coupon rate applied to adjusted principal; paid every six months. Interest accrues and is received at redemption or maturity.
Important tradeoff Selling before maturity exposes the holder to market pricing; the principal floor applies at maturity. Cannot be sold in a secondary market; access and purchase limits differ from marketable securities.

For current terms, redemption rules, and tax treatment, check TreasuryDirect’s I bonds page and its TIPS and I bond comparison. The difference in marketability matters: do not treat the two securities as interchangeable just because both have an inflation-linked feature.

Use diversification as part of the response, not a promise

A portfolio’s ability to address inflation does not depend on one security alone. Review the jobs your existing investments perform and whether the overall mix remains appropriate for your goals. Funds can provide exposure to multiple investments, but check what a fund actually holds: a narrow sector or theme fund may leave you concentrated. The SEC’s Investor.gov guidance makes this distinction explicit.

Diversification can spread exposure, but it cannot guarantee gains or prevent losses. Vanguard states: “Diversification does not ensure a profit or protect against a loss.” Vanguard’s diversification commentary is a useful reminder not to treat diversification as a shield against every market outcome.

A deliberate review beats a rushed overhaul

  1. Write down the purpose of the money. Separate long-term goals from near-term spending and emergencies.
  2. Check whether your current allocation still fits. Compare it with your time horizon, liquidity needs, and risk tolerance—not just the latest inflation news.
  3. Understand any proposed inflation-linked holding. For TIPS, distinguish the maturity principal protection from the price risk of selling early. For I bonds, account for their non-marketable status and purchase limit.
  4. Check diversification at the holdings level. A fund label does not establish that the fund is broadly diversified.
  5. Make changes only when they serve the plan. If an allocation no longer matches your needs, adjust deliberately rather than chasing recent performance.

Vanguard’s August 19, 2026 guidance puts the behavioral point plainly: “As time goes on and the market ebbs and flows, it’s important to stay disciplined and not make decisions based off emotions.” The practical aim is not to predict the next inflation reading; it is to keep the portfolio aligned with the reason you invested.
