Before you turn on your Galaxy Z Fold
If you plan to migrate data, have your old phone nearby, turned on, and unlocked. Samsung recommends keeping the devices close during transfer; charging both first is a practical precaution if the transfer takes a while. You can set up the Fold without transferring anything.
Set up the phone for the first time
- Turn on the Galaxy Z Fold.
- Choose your preferred language, tap Start, and accept the terms shown on screen.
- Connect to Wi-Fi when prompted. If quick setup offers to bring over the old phone’s network, follow the prompt; otherwise, select a network and enter its password.
- Choose whether to transfer data now. If you are transferring, identify the old device type and follow the Smart Switch prompts below. If not, continue through the wizard.
- Follow the remaining on-screen prompts for Google and Samsung accounts, screen lock and security, and any other setup options presented on your device.
- Complete any carrier instructions shown for mobile service. Activation steps depend on your carrier, model, plan, and market; use your carrier’s instructions for SIM or eSIM activation.
Samsung’s Z Fold7-family setup guide includes language, Wi-Fi, account sign-in, terms, and lock-screen setup. The order and available screens can differ, including by carrier.

Transfer data with Smart Switch during setup
Samsung’s US Galaxy Z Fold8 setup guide supports a QR-guided Smart Switch flow for moving supported content from a Galaxy or other Android device, or an iPhone or iPad. Keep the old device on and unlocked, then follow the prompts on both phones to connect. Samsung describes wireless transfer as the easiest option and also documents a USB cable alternative.
- On the new Fold, select the old device type when prompted.
- Choose the connection method offered: wireless or a compatible USB cable. If using a cable, it must fit the devices; a cable is optional.
- Scan the QR code when the Fold displays one, then follow the connection instructions on both devices.
- Choose what to transfer. Depending on the prompts, options include Everything (supported content), a more limited calls, contacts, and messages selection, or Custom.
- Start the transfer and leave both devices close by while it runs. Follow any additional prompts shown on either screen.
These choices cover supported content; they do not guarantee that every third-party app or its private data will transfer, especially between different platforms. Samsung’s setup instructions do not provide a measured speed comparison between wireless and cable transfer.

If you skipped the transfer during setup
You can transfer supported content later without factory-resetting the Fold. Samsung documents this route for the Galaxy Z Fold8:
- On the Fold, open Settings > Accounts and backup > Transfer data for device setup.
- Tap Receive on this phone.
- Choose the old device type and connection method, then follow the Smart Switch prompts to connect and select content.
Samsung recommends transferring during initial setup for what it describes as the “fastest and easiest experience”; this is Samsung’s guidance, not a published speed comparison.

Check the new Fold before erasing the old phone
After setup or transfer, open the Fold and confirm that the information and access you rely on are available. Check important contacts, messages, photos, authenticator access, and apps before you erase, trade in, or stop using the old device. If something is missing, keep the old phone intact while you investigate transfer options for that content.
