Start with the controller powered off and disconnected, then gently wipe its thumbsticks and grips with a clean, soft cloth. If that is not enough, use only the cleaning method approved for your exact controller: manufacturer guidance differs on water, disinfectant and chemicals, so there is no universally safe alcohol-based cleaner.
What you need before cleaning
- A clean, soft, lint-free cloth; microfiber is a practical choice for gentle surface wiping.
- Water, mild soap solution or disinfectant only if the instructions for your controller model allow it.
Do not start with a solvent, abrasive pad or cleaner marketed for electronics. The reviewed manufacturers do not establish one chemical as safe for every thumbstick coating, grip or plastic surface.
How to clean thumbsticks and grips
- Power down and disconnect. Turn off the controller and unplug its cable. Remove detachable accessories only if the instructions for that model permit it.
- Wipe dry first. Use a clean, soft cloth to gently wipe the thumbstick caps and grip surfaces. Avoid grinding grit into textured areas.
- Check the model-specific instructions if grime remains. Use only the damp-cloth or disinfectant method the manufacturer specifies. Keep moisture minimal and never spray or pour liquid onto the controller.
- Keep liquid away from openings. Do not let it pool around the stick base, buttons, seams or ports.
- Let it dry fully. If you used a damp cloth or disinfectant, wait until the controller is completely dry before reconnecting or playing.

Can you use alcohol on controller grips?
Only when the instructions for the exact product allow it. Nintendo permits a specified alcohol disinfectant for its listed Switch products, while Sony’s DualSense manual says not to use alcohol or other chemicals. Microsoft’s repair use of isopropyl alcohol is for removing adhesive residue in a particular repair context, not a general cleaning recommendation. These differences make model-specific instructions more reliable than a universal rule.

If the grips feel sticky or look worn
Use the approved gentle cleaning method first, and do not scrub aggressively or add a stronger chemical because a surface remains sticky. The manufacturer guidance cited here does not establish that cleaning will restore a worn, discolored or degraded surface. If a grip or thumbstick appears damaged, consult the controller maker’s support information rather than treating it with an unapproved solvent.
