Google’s current documentation explains how to create them, but it does not establish the seven personal Skills or the featured “#4” promised by the original title. Rather than inventing examples or first-person results, this guide covers what Skills do, who can use them, and how to build a useful one.
What Gemini Skills do
A Skill saves custom instructions for reuse across Gemini chats and tasks. Gemini may recognize when a Skill is relevant and apply it in the background, or you can ask Gemini to use a particular Skill. Google also says multiple Skills can be combined for a more complex workflow. See Google’s Gemini Skills help page for the current feature description.
In practice, a Skill is useful when you repeatedly ask Gemini to follow the same process, account for the same context, or return work in the same format. It is a reusable set of directions, not proof that every response will be identical or correct.
Who can use Gemini Skills
Google says Skills are rolling out gradually. Its help page currently lists these requirements and platforms; availability may change as rollout continues:
#1 Best Overall
- You must be at least 18.
- You need a personal Google Account, with Keep Activity enabled.
- Skills are listed as available in the Gemini mobile app, the Gemini app on Mac, and Gemini on the web at gemini.google.com.
- Google says Skills are not available for work or school accounts at this time.
How to create a Skill
Google documents four ways to start: ask Gemini to create one, edit a recommended template, create one manually, or upload a file or folder. These are available approaches rather than a ranking; choose based on how much control you want and whether you need to include reference files.
Create with Gemini or a template
Use Gemini-assisted creation if you want help turning a recurring task into instructions. A recommended template can give you a starting structure to edit. Review the resulting instructions before relying on them: the goal is to capture your intended process, not merely to make a prompt longer.
Rank #2
Create manually
Manual creation gives you direct control over the wording. It is a good fit when the task has specific constraints, such as a required output structure, a defined audience, or steps Gemini should follow in order.
Upload a file or folder
For file-based Skills, Google specifies a SKILL.md file and allows optional supported reference files. Scripts that require internet access are not supported. Reference files must be uploaded with the Skill; they cannot simply be fetched from an external location when the Skill runs. Check Google’s current instructions for supported file types and upload details.

What to put in a reusable instruction
Google’s advice about writing custom Gems recommends stating the goal, desired behavior, background context, and preferred response format. That advice is documented for Gems, not as a formal requirement for Skills, but it is a practical framework for making reusable instructions clearer. Google also describes using Gemini to rewrite instructions, then reviewing and editing them. See Google’s tips for creating custom Gems.
- Goal: Describe the recurring task and what a successful result should accomplish.
- Behavior: Specify the process, checks, or constraints Gemini should follow.
- Context: Include information that is consistently needed, and upload reference files when the Skill must rely on them.
- Format: Name the expected structure, such as a short answer, a checklist, or a table, when that structure matters.
Keep stable instructions in the Skill and provide task-specific details in the chat. For example, a Skill can describe how to prepare a concise meeting recap, while the user supplies the meeting notes and audience for each recap. This separation makes the reusable directions easier to maintain.
Rank #4
How Skills relate to Gems
Google describes Gems as customized versions of Gemini designed around repeat goals and guidelines. Its Gems help page says that, starting in November 2026, Gems on personal Google Accounts are scheduled to go away and automatically transition to Skills. That date is a future announcement, not a completed change; check Google’s Gems help page for the latest wording and timing.
