A Steam demo that won’t download and one that installs but won’t launch need different fixes. First note the exact error, your operating system, whether the demo is missing, queued, stuck, or installed, and whether other Steam downloads work. Then follow the matching steps below rather than changing unrelated settings.
Start with a restart and identify the failure
- Exit and reopen Steam, restart your computer, then try the demo again. Steam includes restarting among its basic installation and launch troubleshooting steps: installation guidance and launch guidance.
- Record the exact Steam message and your operating system. Note whether the demo is absent from your Library, queued or stuck downloading, fails during installation, or finishes installing but will not open. Also check whether other Steam downloads work and whether this demo worked before.
These details matter: Steam has separate guidance for download problems, installation errors, unsupported platforms, and named launch errors.
If the demo will not download or install
Clear Steam’s download cache
In Steam, open Settings → Downloads → Clear Download Cache, then sign in again when prompted and retry. Steam says clearing the cache can resolve games that will not download or start; installed games are not removed. See Steam’s download-cache instructions.
Test the download region
Open Settings → Downloads and check the Download Region. Try your local region, then a nearby alternative if the download is slow or the region may be unavailable. Restore your preferred region after the test. Steam explains the region setting and connection troubleshooting in its guides to slow downloads and content servers and unavailable or busy servers.

Repair the library if Steam reports an installation or update error
Go to Settings → Storage, select the library containing the demo, and use Steam’s folder-repair option. Steam notes that library-folder permissions can interfere with updates. If part of the demo installed, verify its files as described below. Its installation troubleshooting page also suggests testing another existing drive or library to determine whether the original storage location is involved; this is a diagnostic, not a reason to buy a drive. If you have broader storage problems, check the drive for errors.
Investigate connectivity only when the symptoms point there
If Steam downloads in general are failing, or the error indicates a connection problem, check whether security software, packet filtering, a firewall, router settings, or internet configuration is interfering with Steam. Steam lists these as possible connection issues in its content-server troubleshooting. Avoid disabling security protections indiscriminately; use the relevant product’s settings or support guidance to investigate a specific block.

If the demo installs but will not launch
Verify the installed files
In your Library, right-click the demo and choose Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. The check may take several minutes. Steam notes that a file can fail verification without indicating a broken installation when it is a local configuration file that Steam does not replace. See Steam’s file-verification instructions.
Confirm that this specific demo supports your system
Check the demo’s own Store page for supported operating systems and hardware requirements; do not assume that support for the full game or another demo applies. If Steam says “Game is not available on your current platform,” Steam Support says the game is not supported on the operating system you are using. Compare your computer with the demo’s listed requirements, and update your operating system and relevant drivers where appropriate. Check for an app that is still running
For “app already running,” the demo may have crashed or hung without closing its process. On Windows, open Task Manager, find the game process, and end it; restarting the computer is another option. If you are enrolled in the Steam client beta, Steam suggests trying outside the beta. On macOS or Linux, restart the computer. If the message persists, contact the game’s support team. Check “Missing Executable” carefully
Review your antivirus or other security software’s history for a game file that was quarantined or blocked. Then restart Steam and verify the demo’s files. If the problem remains, Steam asks users to submit a support ticket with an uncropped screenshot of the error and a system report. Follow Steam’s Missing Executable guidance.

For “This game is currently unavailable”
Follow the checks on Steam’s error-specific page, which includes restarting, updating drivers, verifying files, and checking permissions and network conditions. As an advanced diagnostic, Steam suggests trying the game’s executable from its installation folder; the file location varies, and launching it directly may reveal a more specific error. Some titles also run secondary installers for dependencies. If one was canceled or blocked, that could prevent launch.
Test software conflicts without removing protection
If there is a plausible conflict, temporarily close non-essential applications and retry the demo. Steam lists interfering applications as one possible launch cause. Treat this as a targeted test; it is not a reason to uninstall security software or disable protections across the system.

When to contact Steam or the game developer
If the relevant steps do not resolve the problem, use the game’s Support area to contact Steam Support or the developer. Include the exact error text, operating system and version, whether the demo worked before, what you tried, and a screenshot. For a Missing Executable error, include the uncropped screenshot and system report Steam requests. A symptom alone does not establish the cause, and a demo-specific issue may need the developer’s help.
