To tell whether an Amazon deal is genuinely better, compare the exact same item, the total checkout cost, its recent price history, and the seller and purchase terms—not just the discount badge. Then confirm the competing offer and any price-match policy on the retailer’s own current listing.
How to compare an Amazon deal step by step
- Identify the exact item. Record the brand, model number, size, color, quantity, condition, and included accessories. Similar-looking products may be different variants or retailer-exclusive versions. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends noting the manufacturer or model number and details such as size, color, and shipping fees when comparison shopping: FTC online shopping guidance.
- Calculate the amount you will actually pay. Compare the item price plus shipping, handling, delivery, taxes where available, and other applicable charges. Note whether the displayed price requires a coupon, membership, bundle, minimum purchase, or other condition. The FTC advises shoppers to check total cost and deal terms.
- Check Amazon’s price history if the listing offers it. Amazon says eligible product pages in the US, UK, and India show 30-, 90-, and 365-day price-history views. - Compare live offers from other retailers. Search the exact model or manufacturer part number, then open the retailer’s own product page. Confirm the variant, condition, stock status, checkout price, delivery, and return terms. Comparison-site listings can be sponsored, incomplete, or out of date, so treat them as leads rather than final confirmation.
- Check the seller and fulfillment details. An Amazon offer may be sold by Amazon or by a marketplace seller. Compare who sells and fulfills each offer, the delivery promise, and return terms. - Review any price-match or price-adjustment policy. Check the retailer’s current terms and confirm the exact item, seller, and sales channel qualify before relying on a match. Policies can differ between online and in-store purchases.

How to judge Amazon’s displayed discount
A “was” price, list price, or strikethrough amount is context—not proof that the deal is unusually good. Under the FTC’s US former-price guidance, a comparison price is legitimate when it is a bona fide price at which the item was regularly offered for a reasonably substantial period. The regulation states: “If the former price is the actual, bona fide price at which the article was offered to the public on a regular basis for a reasonably substantial period of time, it provides a legitimate basis for the advertising of a price comparison.” See 16 CFR § 233.1(a). This is US federal guidance; rules elsewhere may differ.
For a practical check, compare the current price with the available history and with current offers for the exact same item elsewhere. Amazon says its history feature provides 30-, 90-, and 365-day views on eligible pages in the US, UK, and India; verify that the feature appears for the listing you are considering. A history chart is useful context, not a guarantee that the product is at its lowest-ever price or that another retailer’s offer is equivalent.
Price matching depends on the retailer and sales channel
Do not assume a retailer will match every Amazon listing. For example, Target’s current policy allows qualifying matches for certain identical products sold and fulfilled by Amazon or Walmart, subject to its eligibility rules and exclusions. Suppose an Amazon listing and another retailer both show the same brand of headphones. Before deciding, compare the model number, color, condition, and what accessories are included. Add shipping and any required coupon or membership to each price, check the Amazon history if available, and compare who sells and fulfills each order. If the other retailer’s price looks better, verify it on that retailer’s live product page and check whether its return terms or price-match rules apply to that offer.
