Neither AUX nor Bluetooth is universally better for TV sound. Choose based on the ports and audio-output features of your exact TV and speaker. A wired AUX connection works only when the TV has an analog audio output and the speaker has a matching AUX input. Bluetooth works only if the TV can transmit audio to Bluetooth speakers, and its delay can vary. If you specifically want Echo speakers to play TV audio, Amazon’s supported Alexa Home Theater setup is a separate option—not a standard AUX connection.
First, distinguish an AUX input from an AUX output
An AUX input on a speaker receives analog audio from another device. It does not mean an Echo has an analog audio output, and the presence of an AUX input on a speaker does not establish that a TV can connect to it. Check the ports on both devices before choosing a cable.
Amazon’s instructions for Echo Input describe connecting that device to an external speaker’s AUX input, or pairing it with a Bluetooth speaker. Echo Input adds Alexa to an external speaker; this is not the same as using any Echo speaker as a wired TV speaker. See Amazon’s Echo Input setup instructions and Echo Input overview.

This is a compatibility comparison, not a measured sound-quality or latency test. The Amazon setup documentation does not establish a general latency winner between AUX and Bluetooth.

When AUX is the practical choice
Use an AUX cable when the TV has an analog audio output and the speaker has the matching input. The connection is straightforward once those ports are confirmed. If either device lacks the required port, an AUX input on a different Echo-related device does not solve that mismatch.
When Bluetooth is the practical choice
Bluetooth is an option only when the TV can send audio to Bluetooth speakers. Amazon’s instructions for pairing a Bluetooth speaker with an Echo describe Echo-to-speaker pairing; they do not prove that every TV can transmit sound over Bluetooth. Check the specific TV’s manual and the speaker’s supported features. Amazon explains speaker pairing in its Bluetooth speaker instructions.

After pairing, test dialogue against the picture. Bluetooth delay and lip-sync behavior depend on the devices and setup, so do not assume that every combination will stay in sync.
How Echo speakers can play TV audio
For Echo speakers, Amazon’s documented TV-audio route is Alexa Home Theater with compatible Fire TV and Echo devices. Amazon’s current guide lists supported combinations, including Echo Studio (2025 release) and Echo Dot Max with certain Fire TV models, as well as separate older configurations. Consult the Alexa Home Theater compatibility and setup guide for the exact generations; product-family names alone are not enough to confirm support.

Amazon describes combining a compatible Fire TV with up to two compatible Echo devices and, in the listed setup path, an optional Echo Sub. Some supported Fire TV smart TVs can route TV audio through Echo speakers; Amazon’s instructions for that route require Wi-Fi and devices assigned to the same room. What HDMI ARC changes
HDMI ARC can let an eligible Fire TV and Echo configuration play audio from the TV and other HDMI sources, such as a game console. Amazon requires compatible Fire TV and Echo devices and a TV with HDMI ARC. Its setup instructions also discuss enabling ARC/CEC and adjusting audio-format settings as needed. Amazon describes this as a supported Alexa Home Theater configuration; ARC does not make every Echo compatible with every TV. Amazon’s Fire TV setup guide also provides a lip-sync adjustment for Alexa Home Theater. That control is useful for tuning a supported setup, not evidence that all connections have the same delay.

- Identify the TV model. Look up its available audio outputs and whether it supports Bluetooth audio output or HDMI ARC.
- Identify the speaker model. Check whether it has an AUX input, accepts Bluetooth audio, or appears in Amazon’s current Alexa Home Theater compatibility list.
- If using AUX, match both ports. The TV needs an analog audio output and the speaker needs a compatible AUX input.
- If using Bluetooth, verify TV transmission support. Do not infer TV compatibility from instructions for pairing a Bluetooth speaker with an Echo.
- If using Echo speakers, check the full Amazon configuration. Confirm the Fire TV and Echo generations, any HDMI ARC requirement, Wi-Fi and room setup requirements, and then test dialogue sync.
If your main priority is a simple connection, a matching wired route may be the clearest choice; if you want to use Echo speakers, verify Alexa Home Theater compatibility first. Where Bluetooth is supported, a real sync check with your TV and speaker is more useful than assuming all Bluetooth setups behave alike.
