Yes. You can edit text in Adobe Illustrator as long as it remains live text. Choose the Type tool (T) to change words, Area Type to fit text inside a shape or frame, Type on a Path to place it along a curve, or Touch Type to adjust individual characters. Text converted to outlines is made of vector paths and can no longer be edited with text controls.
How do I edit ordinary text in Illustrator?

Select the Type tool from the toolbar, or press T.

Click inside the text you want to change. If you click on the artboard without selecting existing text, Illustrator creates a new text object.

Place the insertion point where you want to make a change, then type, delete, or replace characters.

When finished, switch to the Selection tool to select or move the text object as a whole.

The Type tool edits characters; the Selection tool selects or moves the text object or its frame. Adobe’s desktop text-tools guide and Type tool basics describe these workflows.
Should I use point text or area text?

To put words inside an existing shape, choose Area Type and click the shape’s path, then enter or paste the text. The path controls the text area. For a new rectangular frame, drag with the Type tool to define the area. Adobe explains these options in its text tools guide and Type tool overview.

How do I put text on a path?

Choose the Type on a Path tool.

Click the path or shape border where the text should begin.

Type or paste your text. It follows the path rather than sitting in a conventional frame.

For text that follows a curve or shape outline, use Type on a Path rather than Area Type. Adobe’s desktop text tools guide covers both path-based options.
How do I move, rotate, or resize one character?
Use Touch Type when only an individual character needs a different position, size, or rotation:

Select the text object.

Choose the Touch Type tool.

Select the character to adjust, then drag it to move, scale, or rotate it.
This changes a character within live text; it is different from selecting and moving the whole text object. See Adobe’s Touch Type instructions.

Why can’t I edit the words?
Check whether the object is still live text. If the Type tool lets you place an insertion point and edit characters, it remains text. If selecting it shows vector paths or anchor points instead of text controls, it may have been converted to outlines. Adobe’s Illustrator web beta guide states: “Once you convert text into outlines or paths, it loses its text properties, making it uneditable with text controls.”
Outlining is useful when text must behave as vector artwork, but it removes text-editing controls. Keep an editable copy before outlining if you may need to revise the wording. Adobe’s Illustrator on the web (beta) guide documents the limitation; it does not establish a method for restoring outlined paths to live text.
Are the steps the same in Illustrator for desktop and web?
Adobe documents the Type, Area Type, Type on a Path, and Touch Type tools in its desktop guidance. Its separate Illustrator on the web guide is explicitly labeled beta and gives web-specific editing and outlining steps. The web guide says access is part of an Illustrator subscription. These documents do not establish that every desktop feature or workflow is available on the web, so follow the instructions for the version you are using.
