Choose a MacBook Air if its 500-nit Liquid Retina display and P3 wide color meet your everyday or design needs. Choose a MacBook Pro if you need its Liquid Retina XDR display’s higher listed HDR brightness or ProMotion refresh rates up to 120Hz. Those are comparisons of Apple’s published specifications, not results of hands-on testing.
MacBook Air vs. MacBook Pro display specifications
Apple lists P3 wide color on both the compared Air and Pro displays. The main listed differences are display type, brightness, and refresh rate:
| Display feature | MacBook Air in Apple’s comparison | MacBook Pro in Apple’s comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Display family | Liquid Retina | Liquid Retina XDR |
| Brightness | 500 nits | 1,000 nits sustained full-screen; 1,600 nits peak for HDR content |
| Color | P3 wide color | P3 wide color |
| Refresh rate | ProMotion not listed for the compared models | ProMotion adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz |
| Screen size and resolution | Varies by model; check Apple’s listing for the exact configuration | Varies by model; check Apple’s listing for the exact configuration |
These are Apple’s listed product specifications; they do not establish measured color accuracy or performance in every real-world condition. Apple’s Mac comparison page is the source for the compared models’ display names, brightness, color, refresh rate, sizes, and resolutions.
Is the MacBook Air display good enough for design?
For many design tasks, the compared Air’s listed 500-nit brightness and P3 wide color may be sufficient. P3 support is relevant when your work uses a wide color gamut, but it is not proof that a particular screen is accurately calibrated. Apple’s comparison page does not provide a measured calibration report.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If color accuracy is critical to a deliverable, assess the whole workflow: the design application’s color-management settings, the color space required for delivery, your calibration process, and any external review requirements. The Air and Pro both list P3 in Apple’s comparison, so P3 alone does not distinguish them as calibrated production displays.
Which MacBook is best for video editing?
Choose based on whether you need HDR review
For ordinary editing, the Air’s listed display specifications may be adequate if 500 nits and P3 meet your viewing needs. If you need to review HDR content on the built-in screen, the Pro’s XDR specifications are the stronger fit: Apple lists 1,000 nits sustained full-screen and 1,600 nits peak for HDR content. The 1,600-nit figure is a peak for HDR content, not a claim of sustained full-screen brightness.

Consider motion and scrolling
The compared Pro models list ProMotion with adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz; the compared Air models do not list ProMotion. That may make the Pro more appealing if smoother motion or scrolling matters to you. The specification alone does not establish how noticeable the difference will be in your particular editing workflow.
Do I need the MacBook Pro XDR display?
Not necessarily. The Pro’s listed XDR brightness is most relevant if HDR review or brighter-screen capability is important to your work. If you do not need those features, and the Air’s 500-nit display, P3 color, and available screen size suit your tasks, the published specifications do not by themselves establish a reason to choose the Pro.

Check the exact model, size, and resolution
“MacBook Air” and “MacBook Pro” describe product families, not a single fixed display. Apple lists diagonal size and pixel resolution by model, and configurations can differ across generations. Before choosing, use Apple’s comparison page to verify the exact generation and screen size you plan to buy rather than relying on the family name alone.
