A bullet heaven game is an action game where you survive enemy crowds while your character attacks largely automatically and upgrades build your power over the course of a run. Instead of aiming every shot, you typically focus on movement, positioning, and choosing how to grow your attacks.
How a bullet heaven game works
The usual loop is straightforward: move through enemies or around their attacks, keep surviving as your character deals damage, and improve your build with upgrades. Those upgrades can turn a modest attack into a screen-filling barrage, though each game handles upgrade choices differently.
Steam’s Bullet Heaven tag description, quoted by PC Gamer on May 18, 2026, calls it “The opposite of Bullet Hell; Focus on upgrades while automatically attacking hordes of enemies.” That is a useful shorthand, not a strict rulebook for every game in the category.
Bullet heaven vs. bullet hell
The broad distinction is where the action tends to come from. In a familiar bullet hell game, the central challenge is avoiding dense incoming projectiles. In a bullet heaven game, your character tends to unleash an increasing volume of attacks while you manage positioning and upgrades. Individual games can blur that contrast, so the labels describe common patterns rather than mutually exclusive control schemes.

What the genre label does—and does not—tell you
“Bullet heaven” is a genre shorthand, not a guarantee of one exact control layout or progression system. Some games add manual aiming, vehicles, co-op, RPG mechanics, or other substantial twists. Run formats can also differ: a game may use timed waves, stages, open-ended survival, or another structure.
Before choosing a game, check its own description for the details the label leaves open:

- Controls: Do you mainly move and position, or also aim and fire manually?
- Upgrades: Do you choose upgrades during a run, acquire them through another system, or use both approaches?
- Run structure: Are there timed waves, distinct stages, or open-ended survival?
- Progression: What resets after defeat, and what can carry over between runs?
- Extra mechanics: Does it add co-op, RPG systems, vehicles, or another defining feature?
The range of games grouped under the label is reflected in the live Steam curator collection for Vampire Survivors genre games, which also uses related labels such as “Auto Shooters” and “Auto Battlers.”
Why you may see different names
The vocabulary around the category has not been uniform. Players and storefronts have used “survivors-like,” “Survivors genre,” “auto shooter,” “auto battler,” and “auto-attacking wave-based survival game.” A PC Gamer report from December 8, 2025 documented the naming debate. These terms overlap, but they are not always interchangeable: “auto battler,” in particular, can refer to other kinds of games.

Steam now has a Bullet Heaven store tag. PC Gamer reported its addition on May 18, 2026, and GamesRadar+ reported that the wider Steam taxonomy update added 17 tags and removed 28. Store tags can change, and one storefront’s classification does not settle how every player or platform uses a genre name.
Where Vampire Survivors fits
Vampire Survivors is a useful reference point for understanding the style. GamesRadar+ reported that it popularized the category, while noting that it was not the first game in it. It is better treated as a widely recognized example than as a claim about the genre’s origin.

Search terms for finding these games
If you are browsing a store or looking for recommendations, try “bullet heaven,” “survivors-like,” “survivorslikes,” “Survivors-genre games,” or “auto shooter.” “Games like Vampire Survivors” is another useful query. Treat “auto battler” as a broader search term, since it can surface games outside this style.
