For a supported Doc, confirm that you’re using a paid Claude.ai plan, authenticated the right Google account, and have permission to view the file. If Claude asks you to reconnect, disconnect and reauthorize Google Drive; if that fails, remove Claude’s Google connection from your Google account and connect again.
Check whether Claude supports the file type
Anthropic’s Google Drive integration currently supports Google Docs only. Sheets and Slides are not supported through this integration, so trying to add one of those files is not, by itself, evidence of a broken connection. For a Word file, Anthropic says .docx files are unsupported in this integration. Convert the file to Google Docs, then try adding the resulting Doc.
Check the account, plan, and document access
- Plan: Anthropic says the integration is available on paid Claude.ai plans.
- Google account: Make sure you authenticated the Google account that has access to the file.
- Permission: The account must be allowed to view the Doc in Drive. Anthropic states, “You can only sync documents that you have permission to view in Google Drive.” Pasting a URL does not bypass that permission.
Add or reconnect Google Drive in Claude
Add a Doc for the first time
- In a Claude chat, open the add-content menu and choose the Google Drive option.
- Select a recent Google Doc or paste its URL.
- If prompted, authenticate with Google and grant access using the account that can view the document.
Google Docs can also be added to private project knowledge. A Doc added to a chat or project knowledge syncs from Drive, so Claude can use its latest Drive version.

Fix the reconnect error
If Claude displays “Please try again. You may need to reconnect with your Google Drive account,” Anthropic’s documented first step is to disconnect and reconnect Google Drive:
- In Claude, open Settings > Integrations.
- Find Google Drive, open its more-options menu, and choose Disconnect.
- In a chat, select the Drive option again and complete Google authentication.
Reset Google’s authorization if reconnecting in Claude does not help
- Open your Google account connections.
- Find Claude for Google Drive and delete all connections with that name.
- Return to Claude and authenticate with Google again through the Drive option.
If you use Claude for Work
If you cannot enable the integration in a work organization, ask an Owner or Primary Owner to check the organization’s integration settings. Anthropic’s roles and permissions guide lists enabling native integrations as an Owner and Primary Owner capability.

Verify the connection and understand what Claude can read
After reconnecting, test the integration by explicitly asking Claude to use Google Drive and identify a specific document by name or URL. Anthropic’s connector guide recommends testing a connection with a specific tool request.
A successful connection does not mean Claude can interpret every part of a Doc. The integration extracts main text, but does not interpret images or access comments and suggestions. Anthropic lists a 10 MB limit for Google Docs. If the file is within those constraints but still inaccessible, recheck that the authenticated account can view it.

If you lose access to a Doc after adding it, its preview is removed from conversations where it was added, while the conversation history remains. That can indicate a change in file access rather than a general Drive outage.

Anthropic’s public guidance does not establish whether a particular failure is caused by a Workspace administrator policy, a temporary service incident, or an account-specific authentication state. If a supported Doc still fails after reconnecting, contact your Workspace administrator or Anthropic support. Include the exact error, whether the file is a Doc, Sheet, or Slide, the account you authenticated, and which reconnection steps you tried; avoid sharing document contents unless asked through an appropriate support channel.
