Set up a new gaming PC in this order: finish Windows 11 setup, install Windows updates, add any missing manufacturer drivers, check security, configure the display, then install games and tune settings per title. Windows Update is the right starting point for drivers; optional updates and vendor downloads are for specific needs, not mandatory chores.
1. Finish Windows setup and get online
Complete Windows 11’s first-run prompts and connect to the internet. Windows 11 Home requires an internet connection and a Microsoft Account during first-use device setup; internet is also needed for updates and some features. Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements lists the setup requirements.
2. Install Windows updates before seeking extra drivers
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install available updates.
- Restart when prompted, then return to Windows Update and check again until no further updates are offered.
Windows 11 installs recommended drivers automatically through Windows Update. Optional driver updates are not installed automatically; to review them, open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates and expand Driver updates if that category appears. Install an optional driver when it addresses a missing device or a known problem, rather than treating every listing as required. Microsoft explains the distinction in Automatically get recommended and updated hardware drivers.
Microsoft announced Windows 11 version 26H2 on September 29, 2026. It is being offered through a controlled rollout to eligible devices running versions 24H2 and 25H2, and safeguards can delay availability. Check Windows Update rather than assuming a new PC will immediately receive the offer. Microsoft’s 2026 Update announcement describes the rollout.

3. Check for missing device drivers
After Windows Update and its restarts, open Device Manager and look for devices marked with a warning icon or listed as unknown. You can also check whether a device’s basic functions work. If something is missing or malfunctioning, identify the exact PC, motherboard, or component model and download its driver from that maker’s official support page.
Prefer Windows Update or the manufacturer’s own support site; avoid third-party driver utilities as a routine setup step. Microsoft’s Windows Driver Policy says new drivers must be submitted and signed through the Windows Hardware Compatibility Program (WHCP). It also notes that an April 2026 security update changed default trust for drivers signed through the expired cross-signed program. If an older driver will not install, check Windows Update and the hardware or software vendor’s current support guidance rather than bypassing Windows security.

Driver packages and firmware menus vary by PC builder, motherboard, and component. This applies especially to chipset, network, audio, and firmware updates: use the support page for your exact model and follow its instructions. Do not install a BIOS update or enable a firmware setting just because a generic gaming checklist recommends it.
If you have an AMD graphics card
AMD provides automatic detection and manual product selection for graphics drivers on its official driver download page. Finish pending Windows updates first: AMD says an active Windows Update can prevent its installer from proceeding. Its installer offers these software configurations:

These are choices about the included software interface and features, not different levels of gaming performance. For NVIDIA, Intel, or other hardware, use the relevant manufacturer’s official support page; exact installer options and procedures depend on the model.
4. Review Windows security settings
Open the Windows Security app and review its device-security status. Windows 11 requires Secure Boot capability and TPM 2.0. Microsoft recommends enabling Secure Boot for better security, but the exact UEFI/BIOS menu and setting name vary. Check your PC or motherboard documentation before changing firmware settings. Memory integrity is another Windows security feature. It requires hardware virtualization to be enabled in UEFI/BIOS. If Windows reports an incompatible driver, check with the device maker for a compatible update before deciding whether to change the feature’s status. Microsoft explains the requirement and driver issue in Core isolation and memory integrity. Don’t change virtualization or other firmware options unless you understand the effect on your system.

- Open Settings > System > Display and choose the gaming monitor if more than one display is connected.
- Set Display resolution to the display’s supported resolution, typically the option Windows marks as recommended.
- Open Advanced display and choose a refresh rate the display supports. If the expected rate is missing, check the monitor connection, cable, graphics driver, and the monitor maker’s setup information.
Use HDR only when both the display and PC support it. Microsoft recommends current graphics drivers for HDR; its HDR settings guidance covers the Windows controls and requirements.

Consider windowed-game optimizations when they apply
Windows 11’s windowed-game optimizations can enable modern presentation features, including Auto HDR and variable refresh rate on supported displays, for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games played windowed or borderless. To review the control, go to Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Change default graphics settings. Availability depends on the game and hardware; restart the game after changing the setting. 6. Install games, then tune them individually
Install the launchers and games you use, then configure each game’s graphics, display mode, and input controls. There is no universal set of “best performance” settings: the right choices depend on the game, display, and PC hardware. Change one setting at a time and compare the result in the same game and scene. If you are troubleshooting stutter or low frame rates, note the game’s own graphics settings and confirm the display is using its intended refresh rate before making broader system changes.
