There is no single safe patch procedure for every Jira or Confluence installation. “Patch” may mean installing a security fix or making a broader supported upgrade, and the right method depends on the product, installed version, deployment type, and topology. Cloud, Data Center, and legacy Server installations do not share one runbook. Identify your installation first, then follow the current Atlassian instructions for its exact source version, target version, and deployment.
Identify your Jira or Confluence deployment
Before choosing a target or scheduling a change, record the details that determine which instructions apply. Atlassian’s Security Patches Troubleshooting page is specifically for Data Center; do not use it as a universal guide for Cloud or Server.
- Product: Jira Software, another Jira product, or Confluence.
- Deployment: Cloud, Data Center, or legacy Server. Confirm the deployment shown in your administration and support information rather than inferring it from the product name.
- Installed version: Record the exact version. For Data Center, capture every node’s version if they differ or the cluster is not healthy.
- Topology and dependencies: Note whether the installation is clustered, its database and platform requirements, installed apps, integrations, and any customizations.
- Support status: Check whether the current release and intended target are supported for your product and deployment.
Use the documentation for the matching product and deployment throughout the change. Instructions for Confluence Data Center, for example, cannot safely be treated as instructions for Jira Cloud.
Choose a supported patch or upgrade target
For a security vulnerability
Start with the current Atlassian security advisory for the specific vulnerability. Check its fixed-version guidance for the affected product and branch, and use the advisory’s detection or remediation instructions if it provides them. A fixed version for one vulnerability is not a general recommendation for other security issues or for every installation.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For routine maintenance or a broader upgrade
Check the product’s release notes and upgrade matrix for both your installed version and proposed target. Review the release’s upgrade notes and confirm app, database, operating-system, and other platform compatibility before you commit to a date. Jira Software release notes describe bug-fix releases as including security and regular bug fixes, with a generally monthly cadence; that schedule can change, so consult the current release information rather than assuming a date.
Atlassian’s End of Support Policy recommends the latest feature or LTS release and says supported releases receive two years of support after their initial feature or LTS release. The policy gives Jira Software Data Center 10.4.0 as an example: it was released January 22, 2025, with support stated through January 22, 2027. Those dates illustrate the policy; they are not a target-version recommendation for every product or deployment. Recheck the current policy and release status when planning.

Prepare and test before production
Check the installation before scheduling
Review the applicable upgrade notes and matrix, verify app compatibility, and resolve any existing health or cluster problems that could complicate the change. For Confluence, use its built-in “Plan your upgrade” checks as part of preparation. Follow any pre-upgrade health-check instructions in the documentation for your exact product and version.
Make recovery possible
Back up the database and the application directories and home or shared data required by your deployment. Use a supported backup method, and confirm that the backup can be restored using a tested recovery procedure. Atlassian advises maintaining regular, testable backups. Its Data Center guidance warns that an XML database backup can be inconsistent if the database changes while the backup is being made.

Do not use Confluence XML backups as an upgrade method. Use the supported upgrade process for the installed deployment and version instead.
Rehearse outside production
Test the upgrade in a non-production environment before changing production, as Atlassian recommends for Confluence. Make the test representative: use the relevant version, topology, apps, and integrations so you can identify migration or compatibility problems. Schedule a maintenance window appropriate to the documented procedure, and ensure the people responsible for the application, database, and recovery plan are available.

Apply the update using the matching procedure
| Deployment or change | How to approach it |
|---|---|
| Cloud | Do not follow a self-managed Data Center installer procedure. Confirm the Cloud product’s current update and maintenance information, check the advisory or release information relevant to the change, and verify the site after the update according to Cloud documentation. |
| Confluence Data Center | Use the current Confluence Data Center upgrade guide for the exact source and target versions. The guide distinguishes clustered from non-clustered procedures. A rolling upgrade is a separate option for compatible bug-fix updates, not a universal method for every upgrade. |
| Jira Data Center | Use the current Jira documentation matching the product, source and target versions, and cluster topology. Do not substitute an old Jira 7.2 guide for a current runbook. |
| Legacy Server | Confirm the product’s support and upgrade status, then use instructions specifically applicable to that Server version. Do not assume Data Center steps or current Cloud guidance apply. |
Follow the matching guide’s required node order, upgrade path, database and application steps, and downtime instructions exactly. The right sequence and rollback method depend on the installation; do not improvise them from a procedure written for another version or topology.

- Confirm the running version. Check the version reported by the application against the intended target. In a clustered deployment, verify every relevant node rather than checking only one.
- Compare against the security advisory. If the change addressed a vulnerability, confirm that the running version is listed as fixed for the affected product and branch in the applicable advisory. Follow any advisory-specific detection or remediation guidance.
- Run health checks and inspect logs. Use the product’s health-check and troubleshooting resources. Review relevant application logs for startup, migration, or app errors, following the documentation for your version.
- Check application behavior. Exercise core user workflows and important app integrations, and confirm that expected data is available.
- Check cluster status where applicable. Verify node health and that the cluster is operating as expected using the matching Data Center instructions.
If the version is wrong, a node is unhealthy, or errors appear, pause any further rollout and use the product- and version-specific troubleshooting and recovery guidance. Do not treat a successful installer or restart alone as proof that a security fix is running correctly.
