Leverage magnifies price moves against your margin; it cannot make a trade safe, and a forced close or other losses may exceed your initial investment, depending on the product and its rules.
First identify what you are trading
“Bitcoin with leverage” can describe different products. Spot margin involves borrowing to buy or sell an asset; a dated futures contract is a derivative with an expiry; and a perpetual future is a derivative without a fixed expiry, typically with venue-specific funding terms. Their settlement, reference prices, margin rules, and risks are not interchangeable. Check the contract specifications and the rules for your jurisdiction and account before placing an order.
CME describes its standard Bitcoin futures contract as USD cash-settled: it settles in cash rather than delivering Bitcoin. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) warns that leverage amplifies the effect of price changes and that traders in margined futures may have to add funds or close positions; losses can exceed the initial investment. The CFTC’s warnings concern the markets and products within its advisory, not a guarantee of how every product is treated under every jurisdiction’s rules.
Understand exposure, margin, and liquidation
- Notional exposure is the value of the position you control, calculated using the contract’s size and price. A smaller margin deposit does not make a large notional position smaller.
- Initial margin is the collateral required to open a position under the product’s rules. The relationship between notional exposure and margin is commonly described as leverage.
- Maintenance margin is the minimum account equity required to keep a position open. If equity falls below the venue’s requirement, it may demand more collateral or start closing the position.
- Liquidation price is an estimate of where a venue’s rules may force a position to be reduced or closed. It can change with position size, collateral, account equity, fees, and the product’s calculation method.
The displayed liquidation estimate is not a guaranteed boundary. Some venues use a mark price or another reference price for margin and liquidation calculations, which can differ from the last traded price. Binance’s futures documentation, for example, describes its own use of both last price and mark price, with mark price calculated using funding data and multiple spot prices. That is a Binance-specific description, not a rule for other venues.

Margin requirements are product-specific and can reflect changing risk inputs rather than a fixed “safe” leverage figure. CME’s options FAQ describes SPAN inputs that include anticipated price changes over a liquidation period, volatility measures, liquidity, and historical correlations. That is an example from CME’s options margin model, not a formula that applies to every Bitcoin futures product.
Size the position from the loss you can tolerate
Choose a maximum loss amount first, then work out the position size. This is a general calculation method, not a recommended risk percentage or individualized trade advice. The leverage setting alone does not tell you how much you can lose: the notional size and the distance to your planned exit are central to estimating trade risk.

- Set a maximum loss for the trade. Use an amount you can afford to lose without putting essential expenses or obligations at risk. Do not assume that your loss is capped at the margin you initially post.
- Choose the price level that invalidates your trade. Decide in advance where you would exit if the market moves against your position. The distance from entry to that level determines how much a given position could lose before fees and slippage.
- Calculate the loss per contract or unit at that exit. Use the product’s contract unit, tick value, and settlement terms. For a linear position, a rough price-move estimate is the price change multiplied by the amount of Bitcoin represented; the actual contract calculation may differ.
- Allow for fees and plausible slippage. An exit may execute at a worse price than intended, particularly when markets move quickly or liquidity is limited. Include trading costs in the loss estimate rather than treating the planned exit price as certain.
- Choose a size that fits the loss limit—or do not trade. If the smallest available contract would put the planned loss over your limit, skip it or look for a genuinely smaller contract. Do not increase leverage simply to force a position into the account.
For scale, CME’s product information reviewed October 7, 2026, says its standard Bitcoin futures contract is valued at five times the CME CF Bitcoin Reference Rate and that one tick is $25 per contract. CME describes its Micro Bitcoin futures as one tenth the size of the standard contract. Those are CME product specifications, not general contract sizes for Bitcoin derivatives; verify current specifications and availability before trading.

- Contract mechanics: contract unit, settlement method, reference price, tick size and value, expiry, and trading hours.
- Margin rules: initial and maintenance margin, any size-based margin tiers, the liquidation calculation, and which price reference triggers margin actions.
- Account structure: whether margin is isolated to this position or shared across positions, what collateral is eligible, and how fees affect available equity.
- Exit order: the stop trigger type, whether the order becomes a market or limit order when triggered, and how the venue handles an unfilled order.
- Perpetual terms, if applicable: funding schedule, how funding is calculated, and whether payments may add to the cost or proceeds of holding the position.
- Operational and legal rules: forced-close procedure, market interruptions or outage protections, and whether the product is available and permitted for your location and account type.
These details vary by contract and venue and can change. CME’s published Bitcoin futures specifications describe CME’s product; they do not establish that a particular reader can access it. On May 29, 2026, the CFTC announced a policy statement concerning perpetual contracts and an order permitting a designated contract market to list a Bitcoin-referencing perpetual contract. That announcement does not by itself establish current implementation, availability, or access for a specific trader.
Know what a stop can—and cannot—do
A stop order can express a planned exit, but it is not a guarantee of execution at the stop price. A gap, fast market, thin liquidity, or venue-specific order handling can mean an execution at a different price or no immediate fill, depending on the order type and conditions. A stop is also not protection against a liquidation that occurs first: the venue’s margin process and reference price may differ from the stop’s trigger.

Set the planned exit far enough from the liquidation threshold to allow for price movement, fees, and execution uncertainty. If the position’s liquidation estimate is too close to the planned stop or to ordinary market fluctuations, reduce the position or stay out rather than treating liquidation as the exit plan.

While a trade is open, watch the account’s margin ratio and estimated liquidation level, not only Bitcoin’s last price. Reassess the position if its size, collateral, account equity, fees, or the venue’s requirements change. Adding collateral may move a liquidation estimate, but it also puts more funds at risk; it is not a default fix for an oversized position.

If the trade is too large for your loss capacity, reducing or closing exposure is a direct way to limit it. Hedging can also change exposure, but it is not costless or assured: basis changes, funding, fees, and extra margin requirements can introduce new risks. Avoid borrowing or using money needed for essential expenses. The CFTC advises customers to understand the product, assess the possibility of loss, and speculate only with money they can afford to lose.
Dated futures and perpetual futures have different carrying costs
Compare the actual contract terms rather than assuming all Bitcoin derivatives behave alike. The table separates what is established for CME’s dated futures from features that depend on the perpetual contract and venue.
| Feature | Dated futures (CME example) | Perpetual futures |
|---|---|---|
| Expiry | Has a specified expiry; check the current contract calendar. (CME Group, Bitcoin futures product information) | No fixed expiry by definition; venue-specific contract terms still apply. |
| Settlement and reference | CME describes its standard Bitcoin futures as USD cash-settled and valued using the CME CF Bitcoin Reference Rate. (CME Group, Bitcoin futures product information) | Reference-price and settlement details vary by contract and venue; check the contract specification. |
| Holding cost | Holding across expiries may involve closing or rolling into another contract; exact costs depend on prices and trading costs. | Funding terms and schedule are contract-specific. The terms for a particular venue are not stated in the CFTC’s May 29, 2026 announcement. |
| Size and tick value | CME’s standard contract is valued at five times the CME CF Bitcoin Reference Rate; CME states a one-tick move is $25 per contract. Its Micro Bitcoin futures are one tenth the standard contract’s size. (CME Group, product information reviewed October 7, 2026) | Not stated as a universal value; contract unit and tick value depend on the venue and product. |
| Margin and liquidation | Use CME’s current contract and account rules; the figures and calculations applicable to a particular account are not stated here. | Margin tiers, reference price, liquidation sequence, and account treatment vary by venue; no single method applies to all perpetuals. |
| Availability and oversight | Access depends on jurisdiction, account, and applicable rules. | Access and oversight depend on jurisdiction, venue, and product. The CFTC’s 2026 announcement does not establish that every perpetual is available to every reader. |
A practical decision check
Before sending an order, make sure you can answer each question without relying on an assumption:
- What is the actual notional exposure and the loss estimate at my planned exit?
- Does that estimate include contract value, fees, and plausible slippage?
- Do I know which price reference affects my stop and which affects liquidation?
- Do I understand the margin method, collateral rules, and forced-close sequence?
- Can I tolerate the loss without adding funds I cannot afford to lose?
If a material answer is unknown, pause and check the current contract and venue documentation. If the smallest position or likely execution cost exceeds the loss limit you set, not taking the trade is a risk-control decision.
