If Alexa no longer responds to “Alexa, play from line in” or “Alexa, set aux input,” the voice control has been removed—not necessarily the Echo’s physical AUX input. Amazon confirmed the change, reported by Ars Technica on October 6, 2026. For a compatible Echo, check the Alexa app for an AUX Audio or Line In setting; if it is unavailable, Bluetooth may be the simplest alternative.
Why Alexa won’t switch your Echo to AUX
Amazon has disabled voice commands that selected an Echo’s AUX input. The change affects the voice-control function; the report does not say that it disables the physical input itself. Amazon’s notice, as quoted by Ars Technica, says requests such as “Alexa, play from line in” and “Alexa, set aux input” will no longer work. The report names these affected models:
- Echo Plus (2nd Gen)
- Echo (3rd Gen)
- Echo Studio (1st Gen)
- Echo (4th Gen)
That list identifies models affected by the voice-command change, not every Echo with a line-in port. Whether you can still play wired audio depends on the exact model and the controls currently available in its Alexa app settings.
Check whether your Echo’s jack is an input
A 3.5 mm jack does not automatically mean an Echo accepts audio. Depending on the model, the jack may be output-only, a line-in, or a port with model-specific input and output options. Identify the exact Echo before connecting an audio source or buying a cable; Amazon’s device identification guide can help.

Amazon lists the 2019-release Echo Studio with a 3.5 mm AUX/mini-optical line-in port in its safety and compliance information. Amazon forum staff have also described AUX Audio input/output controls for some other full-size Echo models, but those details are model- and software-specific. Check the documentation for your device rather than assuming its jack accepts input.
Try the Alexa app if your Echo supports line-in
For a compatible model, inspect the Echo’s device settings in the Alexa app for an AUX Audio or Line In option. Amazon forum staff have described selecting AUX Audio and then Line In on supported devices, but the available controls vary by model and software version. This is a setting to look for, not a guaranteed menu path for every Echo.

If the app does not offer an input setting, do not assume a voice command or Alexa routine can restore it. The change concerns voice selection, and the available evidence does not establish that a routine can replace the removed command.
Use Bluetooth to send audio to an Echo
If your Echo has no usable line-in control, Bluetooth is a wireless way to play audio from a compatible phone or other Bluetooth source. Follow Amazon’s pairing instructions in the Alexa app. Once paired, reconnect using the device’s Bluetooth controls or the “Pair Bluetooth” command. Amazon notes that some devices reconnect automatically when they are in range.

When Echo Input or Home Theater is relevant
Echo Input adds Alexa to another speaker
Echo Input is a separate device for adding Alexa to an external speaker over a 3.5 mm cable or Bluetooth. Amazon’s Echo Input setup instructions explain the connection options. It does not restore AUX voice switching on an existing Echo.
Home Theater serves a different audio setup
Amazon’s Alexa Home Theater instructions cover specified Fire TV and Echo combinations, including arrangements using HDMI-ARC. That is a TV audio configuration, not a general way to feed an analog AUX source into an Echo.

Before buying a cable
A cable can connect an audio source only if the Echo’s port accepts input. Confirm the exact model and port function first: a cable cannot turn an output-only jack into a line-in or bring back the removed voice command. If wired input is not available through your Echo’s current controls, use Bluetooth where supported or choose a setup designed for your audio source.
