Macs are controlled primarily with a pointer, keyboard, or trackpad—not by touching the display. On Apple silicon, some iPhone and iPad apps offer touch alternatives, including using the trackpad as a virtual touchscreen. Mac Catalyst apps can translate familiar touch gestures into pointer and trackpad actions while adapting controls and menus for macOS.
Can you use a Mac screen as a touchscreen?
No: the touch alternatives described for compatible iPhone and iPad apps do not make a Mac display touch-sensitive. On Apple silicon Macs, certain apps let you interact in touch-like ways using the trackpad. For example, Apple says you can press and hold Option to use the trackpad as a virtual touchscreen. The option is app-specific, so it is not available in every app. Apple’s App Store User Guide explains touch alternatives.
How iPhone and iPad apps run on Apple silicon Macs
Compatible iPhone and iPad apps appear in the Mac App Store with a “Designed for iPhone” or “Designed for iPad” label. Availability depends on the individual app; check its Mac App Store listing. When running on a Mac, an app may provide touch alternatives in its own Settings. Those alternatives can help when an app’s interface assumes touch, but they do not guarantee that every control or interaction will feel natural with a pointer.
How Mac Catalyst translates buttons and gestures
Mac Catalyst lets developers bring an iPad app to Mac and adapt it to Mac conventions. Apple’s guidance describes common mappings: tap becomes a click, touch-and-hold becomes click-and-hold, and pan becomes click-and-drag. Apps can also support trackpad pinch and rotate gestures. These translations help, but an app’s particular implementation determines which gestures are available. Apple’s Mac Catalyst guidance covers input and interface adaptation.

Buttons and controls
An on-screen button may still work when clicked, yet its placement can be awkward in a Mac window. An iPad app may put important controls along a screen edge, where they are easy to reach by touch; on Mac, a toolbar or another in-window location may be more discoverable. A Mac-adapted app should also account for pointer and keyboard input rather than relying only on touch gestures.
Menus and commands
Mac users expect commands in the persistent menu bar as well as in the app window. Some pop-up and pull-down menus in Mac Catalyst apps receive a Mac appearance automatically, but developers may also add or remove menu-bar items to suit the Mac version. If an essential action is difficult to find, check the menu bar as well as the visible controls.

Window size and other Mac features
A Mac app should remain useful when its window is resized, rather than assuming a fixed iPad screen. Apple’s developer documentation says iPad apps running as Mac versions support mouse, trackpad, and keyboard input, along with window resizing, full-screen display, copy and paste, drag and drop, and a default menu bar. A Catalyst app can further tailor its menu-bar items. Apple’s “Optimizing your iPad app for Mac” documentation lists these capabilities.
How to judge whether a touch-focused app will work well
Before relying on an iPhone or iPad app on a Mac, assess the specific app rather than assuming that every compatible app behaves the same way. These checks reflect Apple’s documented interaction patterns; they are not a guarantee that one app format is always better.

- Check the app’s Mac App Store label. “Designed for iPhone” or “Designed for iPad” indicates an iPhone or iPad app available for Apple silicon Mac; the listing confirms whether that app is offered.
- Look for touch alternatives. In the app’s Settings, check whether it offers the touch alternative you need. Option-plus-trackpad virtual touchscreen is one example, not a system-wide feature.
- Try the core gestures. See whether taps, holds, and pans work as clicks, click-and-holds, and click-and-drags, and whether any trackpad pinch or rotate action you need is supported.
- Check where commands live. Look for important actions in the menu bar and toolbar, not only in controls positioned for an iPad screen.
- Resize the window and test your workflow. Confirm the layout remains practical and that the pointer, keyboard, copy-and-paste, or drag-and-drop behavior your work needs is available.
Which path should you choose: Catalyst or an iPad app?
Both a Mac Catalyst app and an iPhone or iPad app running on Apple silicon can be reasonable choices. Compare the actual app versions along these three dimensions:

Apple’s guidance describes the platform capabilities and design conventions, but it does not establish that all touch-focused apps work well or support every alternative. The deciding factor is whether the particular app handles your required controls, commands, and gestures comfortably with Mac input.
