Decide what you need first; treat a countdown or “last chance” message as a reason to check those details—not as proof that the deal is either genuine or misleading.
1. Decide what you need before looking at the discount
Write down the features you will not compromise on and a maximum budget that includes delivery. For example, if you need a laptop with a particular screen size and memory capacity, those requirements matter more than a large percentage-off badge on a model that does not meet them. The Federal Trade Commission recommends identifying what matters about an item and comparing products before buying: FTC online shopping security tips.
- List essential features separately from preferences.
- Set a spending limit that accounts for shipping, taxes, and fees.
- Decide whether a used, refurbished, or close-out item is acceptable before you compare prices.
2. Check that the listing is for the exact item
Product-family names and photos can conceal meaningful differences. Compare the manufacturer and model number, as well as size, color, condition, and included components. Read the full description; do not assume that accessories or parts shown in a photo are included.
Condition labels matter too. A listing marked refurbished, used, or close-out is not equivalent to a new item, even if the name and exterior look similar. If a model number or an important specification is missing, ask the seller or find a listing that states it clearly rather than guessing.

3. Compare the total cost, not the sale badge
Work out what you will actually pay: item price plus shipping, handling, taxes, fees, and any required bundle or add-on. A lower displayed price may cost more once those charges are included. When comparing listings, make sure each one is for the same model, condition, and included components.
Price-comparison sites and alerts can help you find other offers, but they do not guarantee a fair price or neutral ranking; some comparison sites may promote paid results, according to the FTC’s online-shopping guidance. Use them as a starting point, then verify the exact listing and its final cost yourself.

4. Check the seller and the return terms
On a marketplace, identify who is actually selling the product, not just the platform hosting the listing. Look for clear seller contact information and check the delivery promise and applicable marketplace protections. An HTTPS address encrypts a connection; it does not prove that the seller is trustworthy.
Read the return policy that applies to this specific item before paying. Sale or clearance goods may have different terms. Confirm the return deadline, who pays return shipping, whether a restocking fee applies, and whether any exceptions exclude this item. Marketplace protections may also have limits. If an important term is unclear, New Zealand Consumer Protection advises: “If you’re unsure, do not proceed with the purchase.” See its online purchase checks.

5. Treat urgency as a cue to verify
A countdown timer or “last chance” message can make a decision feel more urgent, but it does not establish whether an offer is genuine. New Zealand Consumer Protection identifies fake discounts and countdown timers as possible pressure tactics. Use the prompt to recheck the item, seller, price, and terms; do not let the timer replace those checks. If you cannot verify a detail that matters, pause or choose a more trusted listing.
6. Use this final checklist before paying
- Do I know the exact item and its non-negotiable features?
- Do the brand, model number, size, color, condition, and included parts match what I want?
- Have I calculated the total payable cost, including delivery, taxes, fees, and required extras?
- Can I identify the seller, and do I understand who fulfills the order?
- Do I know the return deadline, shipping responsibility, fees, and sale-item exceptions?
- Am I choosing this because it meets my needs, or because the countdown makes me feel rushed?
- Can I verify any remaining uncertainty with the seller or another listing?
7. Keep the records and act promptly if something is wrong
Save the listing, order confirmation, seller messages, receipt, and return-policy details. If the item that arrives is wrong or defective, contact the seller promptly and keep a record of the exchange. Possible remedies, including payment disputes and return rights, depend on where you bought the item, the seller, and the circumstances. For guidance on your rights, consult the consumer-protection agency for your jurisdiction; the FTC provides U.S. federal guidance, while Moneysmart provides Australian government guidance.
