To loosen a stuck bolt without damaging it, first seat a correctly sized six-point socket fully on the head, clean away loose rust, and apply a penetrant according to its label. Then use controlled force and stop if the head starts to round, the tool slips, or the bolt appears to twist. More leverage is not always safer; heat is a risky escalation around flammable penetrants and heat-sensitive parts.
Before you start, assess what the bolt holds
Identify the part and consider what could happen if the bolt breaks or the surrounding assembly is damaged. If it is a critical vehicle, structural, pressure, fuel-line, or brake-line fastener and you do not know the service procedure, consult the equipment instructions or a qualified repairer before attempting removal.
Use a tool that fits the head
Choose a correctly sized socket or wrench that engages the fastener fully. The U.S. Navy’s fastener chapter recommends a six-point impact socket for stuck fasteners. Keep the socket straight and seated; a loose fit or angled tool can slip across the corners and round the head. If using an impact wrench, use an impact-rated socket and follow the tool maker’s instructions.
Clean and apply penetrant
- Remove loose debris. Brush away accessible rust and dirt around the fastener and joint. WD-40 Company recommends cleaning loose rust before applying its product in its penetrant instructions.
- Apply penetrant to the joint. Aim for the accessible threaded area as well as the fastener. Valvoline, CRC, 3-IN-ONE, and WD-40 describe products intended for stuck or corroded fasteners: see Valvoline, CRC, 3-IN-ONE, and WD-40.
- Wait as directed on the label. Soak time and application directions vary by product. Reapply only when the label allows it; check the product label and safety data sheet (SDS) for material compatibility and handling precautions.
These manufacturers’ descriptions establish intended use, not that one brand is better or that any penetrant will prevent a bolt from breaking.

Apply steady force, then stop at the warning signs
With the tool fully seated and aligned, apply controlled, steady loosening force. Avoid jerking the tool or repeatedly increasing force. Stop if the head begins to deform, the tool slips, or the bolt seems to twist rather than turn. Continuing can damage a fastener that might otherwise have been removable.
If steady force does not work, pause. Recheck access, corrosion, the fastener’s direction of rotation, and the risk to surrounding parts. A breaker bar or suitable impact tool may help in some situations, but neither guarantees a damage-free result. Do not treat industrial torque guidance as a DIY target: Enerpac’s loosening information warns against exceeding the specified loosening limit or shock-loading its hydraulic wrench, advice specific to that equipment.

Consider heat only when the assembly and product make it safe
Heat is not a routine next step. It can harm nearby seals, wiring, paint, fuel or brake components, and must not be used around flammable penetrant vapors or residue. CRC’s U.S. SDS for Knock’er Loose Penetrant, revised December 3, 2021, classifies that specific aerosol as extremely flammable and states: “Keep away from heat/sparks/open flames/hot surfaces. – No smoking.” It also calls for ventilation and eye and hand protection. Follow the label and SDS for the product you actually use; products do not all share the same formulation or instructions.
CRC discusses heat as one possible method in its rusted-bolt guide, but that does not make heat appropriate for every joint. Before considering it, verify that the assembly permits heat, that nearby materials will tolerate it, and that product vapors and residue are gone. Never use an open flame around penetrant vapors or residue. In a no-flame zone, CRC identifies a freeze-shock penetrant option; suitability still depends on the specific job and product directions.
