Before you pay, confirm four things: the phone is the exact model and edition advertised, it is not locked to someone else’s account or carrier, it works properly, and you can get your money back if the seller misrepresented it. Limited editions add one extra risk. “Limited edition” is only a seller’s claim until you corroborate it, and a scarce phone is a more tempting target for fakes, swapped parts and inflated prices. This guide gives you a sequence for in-person and remote purchases. Apple’s pre-owned iPhone advice is the most detailed manufacturer guidance available, so iPhone steps are specific. For other brands, use the same checks and follow that manufacturer’s own instructions.
Step 1: Verify the exact handset, not just the edition name
Edition names are marketing labels. Ask the seller to state, in writing, the model, region variant, storage, color, edition markings and carrier-lock status. Then match those details against what the phone itself reports and against the box and paperwork, if included.
- Match identifiers. The IMEI or serial shown on the device should agree with the listing and the box. Brazil’s regulator Anatel specifically advises matching the on-screen IMEI with the box. If they disagree, pause the deal until the seller gives a credible explanation. (Anatel, “Antes de comprar”)
- Check every IMEI. Dual-SIM devices can have more than one IMEI; check each where applicable. (Anatel)
- Understand what an IMEI check proves. It is a restriction check, for example for blocked devices. It does not prove the phone is genuine, original or fully functional. Use official lookup services in your own country; Anatel’s guidance covers Brazil only. (Anatel, “O Que Fazer”)
- Corroborate the edition. Check the manufacturer’s own announcement or support pages for the edition’s real specifications and markings, and ask for provenance such as a receipt. Do not rely on a seller’s description or photos of a box alone.
Step 2: Treat lock status as a purchase gate
A phone you cannot set up is worth nothing, however rare. Apple’s advice is blunt: “Don’t buy an iPhone if Activation Lock is enabled.” If the phone shows “iPhone Locked to Owner,” have the seller remove Activation Lock (by signing out and erasing the device) and complete setup in front of you. Do not hand over money while the lock is on. (Apple Support)
On other brands, the equivalent is the manufacturer’s account or anti-theft lock. Ask the seller to sign out of all accounts, factory reset the phone, and show it reaching the setup screen and then the home screen. Look up that brand’s current instructions for its specific lock.

Step 3: Inspect the body and display
Remove any case and look in good light. Apple calls out screen scratches, damage to the sides and back, and a damaged or debris-filled connector. (Apple Support) For a collectible edition, also look for:
- Cracks, dents, lifting glass, uneven gaps or marks around screws, which can suggest the phone was opened or repaired.
- Corrosion or debris in ports and speaker grilles.
- Edition-specific finishes, engravings or logos that look misaligned, uneven or different from the manufacturer’s official images.
- A back panel or frame that does not match the rest of the phone in color or texture, which may mean a replacement part.
Step 4: Power it on and test function
Apple says to power the phone on, make sure it charges, and test it once it reaches the Home Screen. It also says not to buy an iPhone that will not charge. (Apple Support) Apple’s guide does not list every function test for every handset, so treat the list below as practical good sense rather than manufacturer-mandated:

- Touch response across the whole display, including the corners, and any dead or discolored areas.
- Front and rear cameras, including flash, autofocus and every lens.
- Speakers, earpiece and microphone; make a test call or recording.
- Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and cellular connectivity with your own SIM where possible.
- All buttons, switches and ports, plus wired or wireless charging.
- Fingerprint or face unlock, set up fresh on the phone.
Step 5: Check battery and repair history
On supported iPhones, review Battery Health and Parts and Service History in Settings. Two caveats from Apple matter here. Battery-health information may not be available for an unknown or non-genuine battery, so a missing reading is not proof of a healthy one. And an “Unknown” part status can have several causes, including a non-genuine, previously used, incompletely installed or malfunctioning part. (Apple Support) Record what the screen shows. There is no single battery-health percentage that is a safe cutoff across all brands and models, so judge it against price and what a replacement battery would cost.
Step 6: Confirm network and region fit
A limited edition sold in another market may not work well on your network. Check carrier lock, and check the exact model’s supported network bands with your carrier. (Apple Support) For an imported phone, verify local certification and any restrictions tied to a foreign carrier contract. Anatel warns Brazilian buyers about compatibility and contractual restrictions on devices bought abroad. (Anatel) Rules elsewhere differ, so check your own country’s regulator or carrier.

Buying remotely: extra precautions
You cannot hold the phone, so shift the burden onto evidence and terms. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s marketplace guidance, written for U.S. consumers, advises checking terms and return policies, and using safer payment methods. It also warns that a very low price on an expensive item can be a warning sign, and that stock photos tell you nothing about the actual item. (FTC) Legal protections differ outside the U.S.
- Ask for current photos of the actual phone: front with the display on, back, edges, ports, edition marks, the Settings About screen, and any box or receipt.
- Get the model, storage, edition, lock status, repair history, battery condition, included items and known faults in writing, and keep the messages.
- Read the return window, accepted reasons, who pays shipping and any fees before you pay.
- Stay inside the platform’s payment and dispute protections; moving off-platform removes them.
- On delivery, film the unboxing and inspect promptly. Apple likewise advises inspecting an online-bought iPhone on receipt and returning it if its condition is not as expected. If it differs from the listing, open a dispute within the deadline.
Comparing several listings
| What to compare | What good looks like |
|---|---|
| Identity and edition | Identifiers match the listing and box; edition corroborated by manufacturer information or provenance |
| Condition | Clean frame and screen, all functions pass |
| Battery and repairs | Readable battery data, no unexplained “Unknown” parts |
| Locks and network | No account lock, clean IMEI result, compatible bands |
| Completeness | Original box, accessories and receipt |
| Total cost | Price plus shipping, taxes and likely repairs |
| Seller and protection | Verifiable record, clear returns, protected payment |
A rare phone with a flawed score on locks, identity or returns is a worse deal than a common one that passes everything.
