Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteChange four things first: set brightness to a level that is comfortable rather than maximum, shorten the screen timeout, leave Adaptive Battery (or your phone maker’s equivalent) on, and decide whether Always-on Display and a high-refresh-rate mode are worth their battery cost. Treat Battery Saver as a tool for long days, and Dark theme as a preference that may help on some screens. No official guidance puts a reliable number of extra hours on any of these changes, so this checklist doesn’t promise one.
Android menus differ by manufacturer, model, software version and region. Google’s general Android battery help tells users to follow their device maker’s guidance. The names below come from Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy support pages. If your phone words things differently, open Settings and search for the setting name.
The checklist at a glance
| Setting | Suggested action | What you give up |
|---|---|---|
| Brightness | Lower it to a comfortable level, or use adaptive brightness | Visibility in bright light; adaptive brightness can shift unexpectedly |
| Screen timeout | Choose a short interval | Less time to read without touching the screen |
| Always-on Display | Turn off if you can live without it | Glanceable clock and notifications |
| Refresh rate (Smooth Display / Motion smoothness) | Use the standard setting when battery matters | Smoother scrolling and animation |
| Adaptive Battery / optimization | Leave on | Possible delayed notifications or lower performance |
| Battery Saver / Power saving | Use situationally | Limited background activity, network behavior and some features |
| Dark theme | Enable if you like it | Some apps ignore it; expanded darkening can affect images and legibility |
1. Lower the brightness
The display is a major source of power use, so brightness is the obvious first setting. Google lists lower brightness and automatic brightness among its battery-saving suggestions. You have two reasonable approaches:
- Manual: set a level you like and keep it. This gives consistent results.
- Adaptive brightness: the phone adjusts to ambient light. Samsung explains that Galaxy phones do this, and that anyone who dislikes the fluctuations can switch it off and choose a preferred level.
There is no ideal percentage. The right level depends on your lighting, eyesight and screen, so pick the lowest setting you can read without strain.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.
- Camera: 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 2 MP, f/2.4, (macro). Battery: 5000 mAh, non-removable | A power adapter is NOT included.
2. Shorten the screen timeout
Every second the screen stays lit after you stop touching it uses power. Samsung notes that a long timeout uses more battery, and Google’s Pixel instructions give 30 seconds as an example. Choose the shortest value that suits how you read and interact. If you need more time because of vision or motor needs, a longer timeout is a legitimate choice.
3. Decide on Always-on Display and refresh rate
Always-on Display
If your phone has it, turning it off reduces display use. The cost is losing the always-visible clock and notification hints. Not every model offers this feature.

Smooth or adaptive refresh rate
Pixel phones call this Smooth Display, and it can be turned off. Samsung calls it Motion smoothness. On supported Galaxy phones, Samsung says the Standard mode prioritizes battery life, while Adaptive prioritizes smoother motion. Pixel lists these controls under display settings such as “Display & touch”. Phones without a refresh-rate option won’t show it.
4. Leave Adaptive Battery on
Google says Adaptive Battery and battery optimization on Pixel phones are on by default, and it recommends keeping them on. They let apps you use less run less often in the background. The trade-offs are possible delayed notifications and lower performance.

Timing matters on a new phone. Google says a new or factory-reset Pixel may take a few weeks to fully adapt, because the system learns from recent app use. That is Pixel-specific guidance, not a promise for every Android phone. Poor battery life in the first days isn’t necessarily a fault, and it isn’t a reason to turn the feature off. Disable or exempt an app only if you have a concrete problem, such as a messaging app whose alerts arrive late.
5. Keep Battery Saver for long days
Battery Saver can extend runtime, but it works by restricting things. Google says it can limit or turn off background activity and may delay apps or network connections. It can also affect visual effects and notifications. Samsung’s Power saving mode lets Galaxy users configure some of its effects, and it can dim the display. The exact options vary by model and market.

Use it when you’re away from a charger or the battery is running low. Running it all the time gives you a phone that behaves differently from the one you bought.
Samsung’s battery guidance also mentions Battery protection, which limits how far the battery charges. It’s a longevity feature rather than a way to get more from a single charge. Check your phone’s maker page for what it does on your model.

6. Try Dark theme, but keep expectations modest
Google says Dark theme may save battery on some screens. It doesn’t give a percentage or say it always helps, so choose it mainly for comfort. Some apps don’t support it. Android 16 and newer also offer an expanded option that darkens more app interfaces. Google warns that this can change how images look or make text harder to read. If something looks off after enabling it, turn that option back off.
What the evidence does and doesn’t show
Google and Samsung document these settings and their trade-offs. Neither official source we consulted publishes a measured figure for how many minutes or hours each one saves. Real results depend on your screen, apps, signal strength and habits. Change a few settings, then judge the result over several days of ordinary use.
A note on chargers
No purchase is needed for any of the changes above. Google’s separate advice is to use the adapter supplied with the phone, because other adapters may charge slowly or damage the phone or battery.
