Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo fix incorrect author details in structured data, make the article’s markup match the authors shown in its visible byline, then correct the CMS record, plugin setting, theme, or template that generates the markup. Validate the updated page, deploy it, and check Google’s view in Search Console. A valid fix does not guarantee a rich result, and Google may need several days to recrawl the page.
Why does Google show the wrong author?
Google reads structured data from the page it crawls; it does not necessarily use the author information shown in a separate bio page or CMS screen. A stale value can remain in the article’s rendered markup even after someone updates a profile elsewhere. The markup may also identify the wrong type of author, omit a coauthor, combine several people into one name, or include a title or honorific in the name field.
Compare the visible byline with the rendered Article, NewsArticle, or BlogPosting data. Google’s rule is that all authors presented on the page should also appear in its markup. See Google’s Article structured data guidance.
How do I find the source of the incorrect markup?
- Check the article page. Note the exact byline and every credited author. Inspect the page’s rendered JSON-LD or other structured data, and locate the
authorproperty. - Compare the values. Look for a former author name, missing coauthors, an organization where a person is credited, an invalid author URL, or job-title and honorific text inside
author.name. - Trace the output to its generator. Check the article’s CMS author record and the schema settings or template used by the site. Common sources include a CMS, an SEO or structured-data plugin, a theme, and a custom template.
The exact settings and menu names vary by CMS and plugin; Google’s general documentation does not specify platform-by-platform steps. If a CMS provider manages the structured data, Google advises contacting that provider. Updating an author’s profile page alone will not fix article markup that still emits an old value.

How should author details be represented?
- Use
Personfor an individual author andOrganizationfor an organizational author. - Keep
author.nameto the author’s name. Put the publisher inpublisher; use fields such asjobTitle,honorificPrefix, orhonorificSuffixfor those details when needed. - Represent each coauthor as a separate author object rather than combining names into one
author.name. - Use an accurate author URL or
sameAsvalue when it helps distinguish the person or organization. For an internal author bio page, Google recommends usingProfilePagestructured data on that profile.
For example, a page with two individual authors could use this conceptual JSON-LD fragment. Replace the example names and URLs with accurate details for the actual page:
"author": [
{
"@type": "Person",
"name": "Avery Example",
"url": "https://example.com/staff/avery-example"
},
{
"@type": "Person",
"name": "Jordan Example",
"url": "https://example.com/staff/jordan-example"
}
]

How do I validate and deploy the correction?
- Fix the generating source. Correct the author record, schema configuration, or template responsible for the rendered markup. If a plugin or CMS setting generates the data, confirm the output after changing it rather than assuming the setting fixed every page.
- Validate the page. Run the URL through Google’s Rich Results Test and address critical errors. Check that all visible authors are represented and that the author types and names are appropriate.
- Deploy and inspect. Publish the change, then use Search Console’s URL Inspection tool to see how Google processes the page. Keep the page crawlable; submit or update the sitemap when appropriate.
- Allow for recrawling. Google says recrawling can take several days, but does not give a universal timeframe. Request indexing when appropriate and check the page again after Google has recrawled it.
For errors, consult the relevant structured data or unparsable structured data reports in Search Console. If a manual action appears, review the Manual Actions report: Google says markup affected by a structured data manual action may be ignored even while the page remains in Search results. Also check Google’s content and markup quality guidance; a mismatch with the page or a spam issue is not necessarily a syntax problem. The troubleshooting details are in Google’s Article structured data troubleshooting guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.What if the fix validates but Google still shows the old author?
A validation test checks markup; it does not guarantee what Google will display in Search. First confirm that the deployed page itself contains the corrected markup and that the page is crawlable. Then inspect the URL in Search Console, check for reported structured data errors or a manual action, and allow time for a new crawl. Structured data can be valid without producing a rich result.
