Keep crypto on OKX when you need it readily available for trading or exchange features and accept that access depends on OKX and your account security. Use self-custody when you want direct control of the wallet keys and can safely protect the device and recovery phrase. A mixed approach—an exchange balance for near-term use and self-custody for longer-term holdings—can balance convenience with control, but neither option is universally safer.
What changes when crypto is on an exchange versus in a wallet?
The key difference is who controls the private keys. With exchange custody, you access assets through your exchange account; you do not directly manage the wallet keys for that balance. With self-custody, you control the wallet keys and are responsible for keeping them and their recovery information safe.
OKX describes its Web3 Wallet as non-custodial: “Our Web3 Wallet is non-custodial. Private keys and seed phrases are stored locally on your device. We can’t access, reset, or recover them.” This statement applies to the Web3 Wallet, not crypto held in an OKX exchange account. Read OKX’s Web3 Wallet FAQ.
How do the trade-offs compare?
| Consideration | OKX exchange custody | Self-custody wallet |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls the keys? | The exchange manages custody of exchange-held assets; you access them through your account. | You control the wallet keys and recovery material. |
| Trading and transfers | Convenient for trading through exchange features and accessing funds on the platform. | You initiate transactions from your wallet; transfers require attention to the address and network. |
| If access credentials are lost | Account access depends on the platform’s account-security and recovery processes. | OKX says it cannot reset or recover Web3 Wallet keys or seed phrases; losing them can mean permanent loss of access. |
| Main dependency or risk | Access depends on the exchange’s security, operations, account access, and service availability. | Security and recovery depend on how well you protect your device, keys, and backups; malware, loss, and mistakes are user risks. |
| Product and regional availability | Assets and exchange services may vary by jurisdiction. | Web3 Wallet services and supported assets may also be restricted or vary by jurisdiction and network. |
OKX’s own comparison characterizes exchange custody as convenient for instant trading but dependent on operator security. It describes software wallets as easy to use but more exposed to malware, and hardware wallets as offering self-control while bringing physical-loss and complexity risks. Those are trade-offs, not guarantees about any particular account or device. See OKX’s wallet comparison.

When does keeping crypto on OKX make sense?
- You actively trade or use exchange features. Keeping the amount you expect to use soon on the exchange avoids moving it each time you trade.
- You do not yet have a reliable key-backup routine. Exchange custody avoids putting seed-phrase recovery entirely in your hands, but it means relying on the exchange and protecting your account.
- The asset and service are available where you are. Check current regional and asset support rather than assuming an exchange feature is available everywhere.
Protect the account with a unique password, passkeys, account notifications, and withdrawal allowlisting where available. These measures help secure account access; they do not change who controls the keys or eliminate exchange-related risk. Review OKX’s account-protection guidance.
When is self-custody a better fit?
- You want direct control of the keys and are prepared to manage device security and recovery material yourself.
- You do not need immediate exchange access to the holdings, such as funds intended to remain outside an exchange for a longer period.
- You can accept irreversible recovery risk. If you lose the keys or seed phrase, OKX cannot restore access to its non-custodial Web3 Wallet.
A hardware wallet is a physical tool that can support offline key management; it is not an automatic safety guarantee. You still need to protect the device and recovery phrase, and to check transaction details before signing. Loss, complexity, and unsafe signing remain relevant risks.

What should you do if you lose a seed phrase or private keys?
For OKX Web3 Wallet, OKX says it cannot access, reset, or recover lost keys or seed phrases. The practical consequence is that losing the recovery material can permanently remove access to the wallet. Do not rely on customer support to restore it.
- Write down or otherwise back up the seed phrase offline, and keep it private and protected from damage or loss. An optional physical backup plate can help preserve a written recovery phrase, but it does not protect against theft or disclosure.
- Never share the seed phrase. OKX says it will not ask for one by email or SMS.
- Before sending crypto, verify the destination address and the network. A mistake in either can send funds somewhere you cannot recover them from.
Do not store a recovery phrase in a place that makes it easy for someone else to find or copy. A backup is useful only if it remains both accessible to you and private from others.

What does OKX proof of reserves show—and what does it not show?
OKX’s September 2026 page labels its publication the 47th proof-of-reserves report and reports $27.4 billion in primary assets. That is OKX’s published figure for its report, not an independent assessment of every risk associated with holding assets on the exchange. View OKX’s proof-of-reserves page.
OKX describes the report as a snapshot: it uses cryptographic proof for account balances and compares account liabilities with assets in exchange wallet addresses. The page cautions that assets outside the report’s scope and transactions after the snapshot are not included. A snapshot cannot establish future solvency, provide a full audit of every part of the business, or guarantee that every user can withdraw in every circumstance.

- Separate near-term use from longer-term holdings. Estimate what you need readily available for trading or exchange features; consider self-custody for the portion you do not need on the platform if you can manage keys safely.
- Check availability before moving funds. Confirm that the asset, wallet, and relevant network are supported for your location and intended use.
- Assess your recovery readiness. If you cannot keep a private offline backup and protect it from loss or disclosure, self-custody may add risks you are not equipped to manage.
- Secure whichever access method you use. Protect exchange login and withdrawal settings; for a self-custody wallet, protect the device, recovery phrase, and each transaction.
This is an educational framework, not individualized investment or legal advice. It does not assess the solvency or withdrawal reliability of a particular account, and availability can change by jurisdiction.
