Audit both what readers see and what your site tells search engines: check every byline, bio, portrait, credential, reviewer label, profile page, and author record in structured data. The priority is to correct invented identities, unsupported expertise, and claims that someone wrote or reviewed content when they did not.

What makes an author name or bio misleading?

A byline and profile can shape how much readers trust an article. The key question is whether they accurately identify the person or organization responsible and describe their role and qualifications without creating a false impression. Google Search Central warns that fabricated creator profiles—including made-up names, AI-generated headshots used to suggest a real expert, and false credentials—are deceptive. Read Google’s people-first content guidance.

This is an editorial audit, not a universal legal identity-verification test. A mismatch or missing detail is a reason to investigate; it does not, by itself, prove deception.

How to audit author names and bios

  1. Build a complete page inventory

Export article and review URLs from your CMS or sitemap. Add author archive and profile pages, plus any pages labeled “written by,” “reviewed by,” “expert,” or “contributor.” Record each page URL, the displayed byline, the author profile URL, and any reviewer attribution. This gives you a page-by-page record to compare rather than relying on a handful of prominent articles.

  2. Compare each attribution with the evidence

For every named person or organization, compare the displayed name, biography, photo, title, qualifications, employer, and claimed contribution across the article, profile, and other first-party pages. Ask whether the person actually wrote, reviewed, or contributed in the stated way. Treat name similarity or matching profile details as leads for human review, not proof of identity.

Check material claims against reliable information. If you cannot substantiate a qualification, job title, employer, or subject-matter role, correct it or clearly qualify it instead of presenting it as verified. Flag conflicting or unsupported details for review.

  3. Look for presentation that implies more than you can support

Flag names that present an unverified identity as a real individual, bios that claim unsubstantiated expertise, portraits presented as real headshots without support, and labels that imply someone wrote or reviewed an article when your records cannot substantiate that work. A stock image or generated portrait is not automatically deceptive; the concern is using it as evidence of a real person when it is not that person’s portrait.

  4. Compare the visible byline with structured data

Inspect the page’s Article JSON-LD or equivalent structured data. Google recommends that every author shown to readers be represented in Article markup, that coauthors appear as separate author entries, and that the author type reflect the attribution: Person for an individual and Organization for an organization. Use an author url or sameAs link that helps identify the author. Keep a job title or publisher name out of author.name; put information in the field that describes it. See Google’s Article structured data guidance.

The markup should describe the same authorship readers see on the page. Do not add a person to structured data merely to imply review or authorship that did not occur.

  5. Review author profile pages

Check that each profile is focused on the person or organization it identifies and that the profile reflects an affiliation with your site. It should provide relevant background without repeating unsupported claims. Google gives a news-site author page and a blog’s “About Me” page as examples of ProfilePage use. Its guidance is about how profile pages may be represented in search, not a complete standard for proving someone’s identity. See Google’s ProfilePage structured data guidance.

Log the previous claim, evidence reviewed, decision, correction owner, and correction date.

  7. Recheck after site changes

Repeat the comparison after CMS or template changes. A template can leave visible bylines, profile links, and structured author data out of sync even if each was correct before the change.

How to prioritize findings

Review findings by the likelihood and impact of giving readers a false impression, not by formatting neatness alone.

Finding What to verify Priority
Invented or unsubstantiated identity Whether the named person or organization exists as presented and is actually connected to the work. Highest: investigate and correct promptly if unsupported.
Unsupported credentials or expertise Whether qualifications, title, employer, or specialist role can be substantiated. High: correct or qualify material claims readers may rely on.
Inaccurate writing or review claim Whether the named person performed the stated contribution. High: correct attribution that overstates who created or checked the content.
Profile or markup mismatch Whether the profile uniquely identifies the intended author and the markup matches the visible byline. Investigate; resolve identity or authorship mismatches before minor technical differences.
Minor formatting difference Whether the difference changes the identity or role readers understand. Lower when it is cosmetic and does not mislead.

When an author identity is part of an endorsement

If a person’s identity or expertise is used to endorse a product or service, consider whether the advertiser or sponsor is clear to consumers. The FTC says that when a sponsor’s identity is unclear but would matter to consumers, it should probably be identified. This guidance concerns endorsements; it is not a general rule requiring sponsor disclosure on every author byline. See the FTC’s Endorsement Guides FAQ.
