No. Turning a TV’s brightness to its lowest setting doesn’t make the picture better, more accurate or safer. The right level depends on your room, what you’re watching and your own comfort. A dark room can make a moderate setting feel harsh. A bright room with glare can make the same setting look washed out. The first step is to work out which “brightness” control you actually mean.
“Brightness” can mean two different controls
Most of the confusion comes from the label. RTINGS, in its TV calibration guide (updated May 25, 2026), separates two settings that people often lump together:
| What you want to change | Control to use | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| The screen is too dazzling or too dim | Backlight on LED LCD TVs; OLED Pixel Brightness or the maker’s equivalent on OLEDs | Changes how much light the screen puts out |
| Dark scenes look grey, or shadows turn to black blobs | Black Level (sometimes labelled “Brightness” on older or simpler menus) | Sets how dark the signal’s black appears |
Menu names vary by brand and model, so check your TV’s manual if you can’t find them. The key risk: if you push Black Level too low trying to tame a “too bright” picture, you crush dark tones and lose shadow detail. If shadows have vanished, return Black Level to its default or correct value before touching anything else.
How to set screen luminance for your room
- Pick a typical SDR program or film and sit where you normally watch, with your usual lighting.
- Open the picture settings and find Backlight (LED LCD) or OLED Pixel Brightness (OLED).
- Lower it gradually until the picture is comfortable, not in one big drop.
- Check a dark scene. If you can no longer make out detail in shadows, you’ve gone too far; raise it a notch.
- Leave Black Level at its correct or default value throughout.
This step-by-step approach is practical advice derived from what the controls do. The sources reviewed don’t give one numerical setting that suits everyone. Even model-specific guides, such as RTINGS’ LG C4 OLED calibration settings, give values for that set and room rather than a general rule.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why room light matters
In a bright room or with glare on the screen, you may need more light output to keep the picture visible. In a dark room, the same output feels much more intense, so a lower setting is often more comfortable. That’s why “as low as possible” fails as a rule: it ignores half the equation.
Published figures are tied to specific conditions. A U.S. Department of Energy technical report on room illuminance and TVs with automatic brightness control cites a 2011 study (Matsumoto et al.) in which viewers preferred 160–248 cd/m² at 100 lux of room light. That describes preferences in one study at one lighting level. It isn’t a recommended setting. The same report mentions an ISF dark-room figure of 150 cd/m², attributed to ISF data and personal communication, not to a regulatory standard. Don’t merge these numbers into a single target.

HDR is a different case
HDR content carries its own brightness intent, and TVs often change picture settings automatically when HDR starts. Lowering luminance in HDR can dim the whole image, so SDR habits don’t transfer neatly. If HDR looks too bright, RTINGS’ HDR brightness testing suggests these options:
- Turn off Dynamic Tone Mapping.
- Turn off the ambient-light sensor.
- Choose a more accurate picture mode such as Movie or Filmmaker Mode.
Names and behaviour differ by model, and many TVs keep separate SDR and HDR settings, so adjust each one on its own content.

Should you use automatic brightness?
Automatic brightness control reads the room’s light and adjusts the picture. ENERGY STAR (U.S. EPA) lists it among the features that help TVs use less energy, and the DOE report analyses it in detail. The trade-off is that some viewers find the picture shifting mid-programme distracting. If that bothers you, turn it off and set a fixed level for your usual lighting. RTINGS also lists disabling the ambient-light sensor as a fix for HDR that looks too bright.
What about eye strain and eyesight?
The sources reviewed don’t establish a health-based brightness threshold, and none quantify benefits from running a TV at its lowest setting. Comfort is a fair reason to lower the screen’s light output in a dark room, but nothing here supports claiming that the minimum protects your eyes. If you get persistent discomfort or headaches, that is a question for an eye-care professional, not a TV menu.

Quick troubleshooting
- Picture feels glaring at night: lower Backlight or OLED Pixel Brightness a little at a time.
- Picture looks dim and washed out by day: raise that same control, or reduce glare from windows and lamps.
- Dark scenes look muddy or details disappear: check Black Level and reset it to default.
- HDR looks too bright: try the Dynamic Tone Mapping, ambient sensor and picture-mode changes above.
- Brightness keeps changing: disable automatic brightness.
You don’t need to buy anything for this. The built-in picture controls cover it.
