Yes. You can access Dropbox files offline on a computer, phone, or tablet—but you need to save them to that device while you’re online. On a computer, files in the Dropbox folder are available offline if they’re stored locally rather than set to online-only. On mobile, files aren’t available offline by default. Changes you make without a connection wait to sync until the device reconnects.
What “available offline” means
Making a file available offline stores a local copy on your device as well as keeping it in Dropbox. That uses the device’s storage, but lets you open the file without an internet connection. You’ll also need an app on the device that can open the file type; Dropbox doesn’t make every file format editable by itself.
Dropbox’s help article, “How to make a file or folder available offline in Dropbox,” updated March 3, 2026, describes offline access as opening, viewing, and editing files on your device without an internet connection.
Make Dropbox files available offline on a computer
- Install the Dropbox desktop app and sign in.
- Open the Dropbox folder in File Explorer on Windows or Finder on Mac.
- Right-click the file or folder and select Make available offline.
- Wait for the solid green checkmark, which indicates the item is ready offline.
If the item doesn’t appear in the Dropbox folder, check selective sync: its parent folder must be selected for local syncing. An online-only file isn’t already stored on the computer; you’ll need an internet connection to download it before you can use it offline.

Make files available offline on Android, iPhone, or iPad
- Open the Dropbox app and sign in.
- Tap the options next to or below the file, then turn on Make Available Offline.
- To find saved items, open Manage offline files in the account area of the app.
Dropbox’s March 3, 2026 help article says individual files can be made available offline on any Dropbox plan. Making an entire folder available offline on mobile is limited to Plus, Family, Professional, Standard, Advanced, and Enterprise plans.
Keep mobile offline files up to date
Mobile offline files don’t continuously update over cellular by default. Dropbox describes Wi-Fi as the default update path when the offline list is open. You can manually refresh the list, or enable cellular-data use in the app’s settings if you want updates over a mobile connection. Interface labels and plan eligibility may change.

Dropbox’s help articles “How to use Dropbox to save hard drive space” (updated September 15, 2026) and “How to download a file or folder from Dropbox” (updated February 16, 2026) distinguish online-only files from separate downloads. A separate download is useful as a local copy, but it isn’t the same as a Dropbox file marked available offline.
What happens to edits made without internet?
You can edit an offline Dropbox file using a compatible app on your device. The edits don’t sync while you’re disconnected; Dropbox says they sync automatically after the device reconnects. Until that happens, don’t expect another device to show the changes. Dropbox’s reviewed guidance doesn’t specify the outcome if the same file is edited on multiple devices before syncing, so don’t assume which version will take precedence.

Will Dropbox work offline in a browser?
Don’t rely on opening Dropbox in a browser as a substitute for saving files locally in advance. The documented offline methods use the Dropbox desktop folder or mobile app, and an online-only file needs a connection to download before it can be opened offline.
