Create a written policy that tells staff and contributors who earns a byline, what other contributions receive credit, how rewrites preserve earlier work, who is responsible for published content, and how attribution changes are handled. Journalism and scholarly publishing offer useful examples, but their rules serve different kinds of work; your policy should state your organization’s own standards in plain language.
What an author-attribution policy should cover
An attribution policy makes credit decisions consistent and understandable to readers. It should cover the content your organization publishes—such as reported articles, reviews, commentary, commissioned work, research-based content, updates, and rewrites—and identify who applies the rules and who decides exceptions.
Keep authorship distinct from acknowledgment. A byline or authorship credit should reflect the contribution and accountability threshold you set. A person whose work was meaningful but did not meet that threshold may instead receive a contributor credit or acknowledgment. Journalism and scholarly publishing use different conventions, so choose rules suited to your content rather than treating either model as universal.
Set a clear threshold for bylines and other credits
Describe what qualifies someone for a byline and which contributions merit a different form of recognition. Consider reporting, research, analysis, writing, substantive editing, translation, photography, and other roles relevant to your publication. Explain how you handle one author, multiple authors, collective staff bylines, and credits placed after the article.

Journalism: distinguish reporting, writing, and editing credit
The Associated Press says a double byline or an editor’s note may be used when more than one staff member makes a substantial contribution to reporting or writing. It also says a reporter who contributes anonymous material should receive contributor credit. These examples show how a newsroom can credit work that does not appear as a standard byline. Read AP’s “Telling the Story” guidance.
Wirecutter describes a “Wirecutter Staff” byline for articles generally produced by staff and credits editors at the end of an article. A policy can use comparable distinctions, but should explain what each label means to its own readers. See Wirecutter’s Editorial Standards.

Scholarly publishing: separate authorship from acknowledgment
Scholarly authorship commonly depends on substantial contribution and responsibility for the work. APA’s guidance gives examples such as formulating a problem, designing work, analysis, and interpretation; lesser contributions may be acknowledged rather than treated as authorship. APA states: “Individuals should take authorship credit only for work they have performed or to which they have substantially contributed.” This is APA’s policy language, citing APA Ethics Code Standard 8.12a—not a universal newsroom rule. Review APA Publishing Policies.
Define staff bylines and contributor credits
State when a staff byline is appropriate, who may be named under it, and whether it represents collective work or simply an organizational identity. Clarify whether commissioned contributors receive individual bylines and how editors, researchers, photographers, translators, or other contributors are credited.

Make placement predictable: for example, specify whether a contribution appears in the byline, a contributor line, an editor’s note, or an acknowledgment at the end. Use labels readers can interpret, and avoid implying that someone reported or wrote material they did not produce.
Preserve credit through rewrites and updates
Define the difference between routine maintenance, a substantial update, and a rewrite. Then say what happens to the original byline, when a later writer is added, and how the article describes the work performed. A routine correction or refreshed link may not warrant a new byline; a substantially reworked article may require a different credit treatment. Your policy should provide criteria for making that distinction.

Wirecutter offers one specific approach: on a first rewrite, it moves the original byline to an end credit. When a rewrite preserves two-thirds or more of the original work, Wirecutter says the new writer receives an additional-reporting attribution rather than a new byline. That threshold is Wirecutter’s policy, not an industry-wide standard. Wirecutter’s standards explain its rewrite approach.

Name the human editor or author responsible for approving the final work and explain who is accountable for its accuracy and integrity. If your organization uses AI tools, state whether and how use in research, drafting, editing, translation, or image creation must be disclosed, and where readers will see that disclosure.

APA, Elsevier, and Taylor & Francis each say AI tools should not be listed as authors, while their disclosure guidance differs. APA ties authorship to substantial human contribution and responsibility. Elsevier calls for disclosure of relevant AI involvement affecting content; Taylor & Francis calls for acknowledgment of generative AI use. These are publisher-specific approaches, so write a rule that matches your own workflows rather than suggesting one disclosure standard applies everywhere. Elsevier’s generative AI policy and Taylor & Francis’ authorship guidance provide examples.
Set a process for credit disputes and corrections
Give contributors a route to request a credit change and establish who reviews it. A workable procedure should gather information about each person’s contribution, let the decision-maker explain the outcome to the people involved, and record the final decision. Also decide when a change needs a public notice on the article.
Wirecutter describes correction notes that identify an error and its correction. APA says most post-publication changes require a public notice, with exceptions that include name changes and typographical errors. These examples support visible handling of changes, but do not establish a single dispute procedure for every publisher. APA’s policies describe post-publication changes.
Publish the policy and keep it current
Write the rules in plain language, make them easy for contributors and editors to find, and link them near author information. Assign an owner who can resolve unusual cases and review the policy periodically, especially where AI disclosure and name-change practices may change. Scholarly references such as APA Publishing Policies can inform a policy for research publications, but are not a complete template for every editorial operation.
